What's up doc

Got the greatest question of all time oh wait I forgot it
Mark P
9:39
Nooooo
TxDude
9:40
Favorite ballpark you’ve been to? Atmosphere, food, history, etc.
Mark P
9:40
PNC Park is probably my favourite of the ballparks I've visited, with honourable mention to Wrigley Field and T-Mobile in Seattle
Shawn.

  • What payers do the Reds have to trade besides Castillo and Mahle that have real value?
Mark P
9:43
Drury, Naquin, and (fantasy football drama notwithstanding) Pham could all net some small additions at the deadline.  Farmer could get a sneaky-good return, but I suspect the Reds might think he's a useful enough player to keep.  Maybe Hoffman or a spare part reliever or two, and maybe Minor if he stays healthy and gets on track.
9:44
Obviously players like India or Stephenson have tons of value, but Cincy isn't dealing those guys.
Coach

Lewis, Kirilikoff and SWM to Oakland for Montas. Does that get it done?
Mark P
9:47
It would, but that's an awfully big haul for the Twins to give up
Juan Soto
9:49
Will I be traded at the deadline?
Mark P
9:49
Nope.  Mike Rizzo went out of his way to state that Soto isn't going anywhere.
Cool Canadian

The extra "u" in favourite is pretty cool.

Don’t the Padres have to trade one of their starters now? Let’s face it..they don’t have the offense to do any damage in the playoffs, and need at least 2 good/great bats.
Mark P
9:52
"You can never have too much pitching," as I state the cliche again for the second time in this stat alone.  Injuries can crop up at any time, plus the Padres are dealing with a lot of arms who missed time in 2021
Trevor Story
9:53
Was my early season slump due to change in position?
Mark P
9:54
New position, new league, new home ballpark, shortened Spring Training, signed late....any number of factors could've contributed to Story's slump.  But, he is now making up for lost time.

Hey Mark, are the Mariners bad or just unlucky? Winker, Ray, and a number of other good players have struggled or gotten hurt will they bounce back? And what happened to Kelenic?
Mark P
9:56
Keep in mind, the 2021 Mariners got a lot of good fortune (i.e. run differential, one-run victories, etc.)  So maybe they were due for karma to even out, and they weren't quite as good as they appeared last year.

Winker is also the kind of player who seems prone to slumps, given that he has only been really successful against right-handed pitching.  But, as we just noted with Story, Winker is another player in a new league and a new ballpark, so some adjustment time could be required.  Plus, Winker has traditionally hit better in the second half during his career.

I signed 2 year extension with option
Mark P
9:57
The "extension" carried only a mutual option for 2023, and mutual options are almost never exercised by both sides.

When Oneil comes off IL, who do Cards sit? Donovan seems to have earned at least semi regular at bats
Mark P
10:01
Dickerson getting hurt solves this issue, as STL's regular outfield will still be O'Neill/Bader/Carlson, with any number of players sharing time with Pujols for DH at-bats.  Donovan will then fill in for pretty much anyone who's being DH'ed.

Once Dickerson is healthy, frankly, I wonder if the Cards might consider DFA'ing him
Or working out some kind of trade
RoxTalks
10:02
Any chance the Rockies can figure themselves out in the next few years?
Mark P
10:03
The Rockies are just about the hardest team to figure out in MLB.  They have talent, but they operate in such a curious fashion that it's hard to project their moves in any kind of logical manner.  In a division where the Dodgers, Padres, and Giants seem poised to be good for quite some time, Colorado doesn't have much margin for error....and unfortunately they've made a lot of errors on and off the field.

How does the marlins rotation shake out the rest of the year?  Sandy, Pablo, Luzardo when healthy then what?  Surely they can’t let Rogers continue to struggle with Cabrera, Meyer and even Braxton Garrett ready to step in?  Are they ready to give up on Elieser as a starter?
Mark P
10:06
Meyer will be up at some point, and Elieser might end up being an odd man out.  If Miami doesn't get on track quickly, this could be another evaluation year anyway, as the Marlins might audition the younger guys to see who joins Alcantara and Lopez in next year's rotation.

Am I crazy for thinking Eric Lauer can win the NL CY Young?
Mark P
10:07
Lauer is having a fine year, but there are a whole lot of guys (including some teammates) ahead of him in the Cy race
Joshua
10:07
Does Yadiel Hernandez make sense for the Guardians, and if so, what would they have to give up for him? Thanks.
Mark P
10:10
Yadiel is an interesting trade chip, since he's controllable through 2026 but he's already 34 years old (35 in October).  He has been pretty good at the MLB level, and seems like the kind of sneaky-good player the Guardians would target.

Between his age and lack of a big track record, the trade return would be likely be less for Hernandez than for most controllable pieces.

Even with Greene pressing and some of the regulars coming back from the IL, it’s a tough time to be a Tigers fan, eh? Not a whole lot down on the farm.
Mark P
10:12
As a Toronto fan, it reminds me of the 2013 Blue Jays season, when the team loaded up on major acquisitions and seemed poised for a breakthrough....and then had a dreadful season.

Once everyone finally gets healthy, the Tigers can hopefully get some momentum going.  And, if you want optimism, they're only six games out of a wild card berth.
Stan
10:12
Yankees starters 5/31-6/4 2 runs 14 hits and 43K. Was this the most dominant trip through a rotation or has there been better?
Mark P
10:13
To be fairrrrr (/Letterkenny voice), the Yankees also benefited from facing the badly slumping Angels and the Tigers' woeful bats.  Not to say that NY's rotation isn't awesome, but they also faced some weak competition.
Outfielders schmoutfielders
10:14
What the Padres really need is relief pitching. Should they pursue a trade or wait for Pomerance?
Mark P
10:15
The rotation surplus could help in the bullpen, and relief pitching is generally easier to obtain than a regular outfielder.
The Old Guard
10:17
Should managers like Tony L, Dusty B, and Buck S be shown the door in favor of more stats and metrics friendly, younger managers?
Mark P
10:18
Well, Baker's team won the pennant last year, La Russa's team won the division, and Showalter has the Mets on top in the National League.  So the veteran skippers still know a few things.
