Tim Mayza just separated his shoulder in tonight's game, so that suddenly makes it more glaring that the Jays didn't add more left-handed depth.  I like their moves in a vacuum, but for both the lineup and in the bullpen, it's so heavy with right-handers

Am I in the minority of angels fans that wanted Ohtani traded? Not only for his sake, but our farm system needs revamping. I know prospects aren’t ever a sure thing, but this team will forever stay in mediocrity if we can’t build from within, so might as well trade a guy for a haul of close to mlb ready guys who are looking like they can be real contributors
Mark P
10:32
It's come to this for Angels fans --- they have arguably the most unique player ever, and they want him dealt since the roster seems like a lost cause.
10:33
And, you're not wrong.  If Ohtani isn't keen on an extension and it doesn't seem like the team can win in 2023, a trade is now the more logical option.
Reds returns
10:34
Most casual fans don't understand how good the returns have been for the reds in their trades, but I am excited for the future.
Mark P
10:34
It seemed like a nice haul all-around, so now we'll see what the team can do in developing those prospects.
10:35
Much needed for a team that hasn't done great on the trade front in recent years

10:35
What do you think of the Montgomery/Bader trade?
Mark P
10:36
Really interesting deal, and the Yankees must've been okay with what they saw of Bader's medicals.  Plantar fasciitis is one of those red-flag injuries that always worry me, especially for a player like Bader whose speed and ability to cover CF is such a big part of his game.
10:37
Meanwhile, Montgomery is a solid pitcher, and if the Cards either had doubts about Bader and thought Carlson can capably handle CF, that's a nice get for them

Did the Braves get a draft pick for Freddie Freeman?
Mark P
10:39
Yes, Freeman turned down the qualifying offer. Atlanta got the 76th overall pick, and got Blake Burkhalter (RHP from Auburn)
Lugui
10:40
What’s verlanders next contract look like
Mark P
10:41
I think he gets three years, with an average annual value of $40MM or more
Rev Lovejoy
10:41
How much to sign Vlad and Bo to extensions? Years, total dollars. Can the Jays do both realistically?
Mark P
10:42
Given the underwhelming nature of Bichette's season, I think a Guerrero extension is the bigger priority at this point
David Bell
10:42
Greene, Lodolo, Ashcraft, Dunn, and Williamson as my September rotation?
Mark P
10:43
Greene's injury throws that plan into question
Larry
10:43
did Dodgers get a draft pick for Seager?
Mark P
10:44
They technically did, but surrendered that pick as part of the Freeman signing.  Since the Dodgers were over the luxury tax threshold last year, they couldn't sign a QO free agent without giving up pick compensation
Tigers rebuild
10:45
Do you see the Tigers entering another rebuild. This one hasn't been great
Mark P
10:46
Not immediately, since they won't pivot after signing E-Rod and Baez to big-money contracts.  But if the Tigers don't improve a lot in 2023, hard questions need to be asked, and a front office change might be necessary.  Avila is understandably already taking a ton of heat from Detroit fans.
Yanks
10:48
is the Yankees trading Montgomery a mistake
Mark P
10:50
As a wise man once said, "you can never have enough pitching."

Right now, New York thinks they have enough depth, and their logic was that Montgomery was expendable since he wasn't going to be a playoff starter.  But, just one injury and this logic get shakier.  Two injuries and the Yankees may have real problems.
Flaherty
10:51
Love you alls page but sometimes you say things without any justification that just doesn’t click, what do you mean when you say you don’t see him as a long term fit in saint louis?
Mark P
10:53
It's my opinion, naturally, but it's based on the fact that Flaherty has had two contract renewals and already took the team to an arb hearing once.  And with all his injuries, an extension doesn't seem too likely.

2023 is Flaherty's last year before free agency.  So if he is healthy and pitches great that season, he's probably not taking an in-season extension, and thus the Cards will be bidding against the rest of the league in the 2023-24 offseason.
Diddy Kong
10:54
Seemed like teams really weren't very interested in the Mets farm system (outside the top 5 or so). Is that a fair read, do you think?
Mark P
10:55
Could be that teams tried to take advantage of the Mets' perceived aggressiveness by asking for the moon in trade talks, figuring that the Mets might budge since they're in go-for-it mode.
Fake GM
10:57
Diaz, Nimmo, Degrom, Alonso, McNeil---you can only extend 2 of the 5--who do you allocate your $$$ to for the next 5 years.
Mark P
10:58
If limited to only two....hmm, I guess Alonso and deGrom.  But obviously it depends on contract size and how much money is involved
Dodgers GM
10:59
Does trading Mitch White look bad now that Kershaw is hurt? Or do I just plug Dustin May into his spot?
Mark P
11:00
Speaking of situations where trading from pitching depth can suddenly go wrong....

if I was the Dodgers, I would've hung onto White.
Tyler
11:01
Do you see the Yanks attempting to get Lopez in the offseason as it seems they tried to get him at the deadline but couldn’t?
Mark P
11:01
I'm sure they'll keep calling, but again, the Marlins will need a whole lot to move Lopez.
Larry
11:03
Who has the top farm system now after the trade dead line
Mark P
11:04
Still Baltimore, I would think.  They didn't lose anyone, and only added more prospects via trades and the draft.

Giants done?
Mark P
11:05
I was going to make a "well, the NFC East isn't a strong division, so..." joke, but the NFL Giants are a pretty bad team.  So yeah, I'm already writing them off.  #FootballHotTake

As for the baseball Giants, they have too much ground to make up.  Barring a major hot streak, I think they're done
