Bichette, Kirk, and Pearson for Alcantara, Lopez, and Chisholm. Who says no?
Mark P
9:34
Miami, since they're not moving Alcantara and almost certainly not moving Chisholm.  Obviously the Jays are giving up a lot in that offer as well, but Pearson's trade stock has obviously dropped a lot

Thanks for your efforts here.  What do Nats do about 3b, Rf and SP?  Give up for 3rd year or bet on young players starting to produce and spend to fill holes?
Mark P
9:37
Probably still counting on younger players, and signing stopgap veterans to one-year deals (and then shopping those vets at the trade deadline).

Carter Kieboom will get another look at third base, but the Nats likely pick up a veteran infielder to at least split time.

Should LA spend on a SS or SP? I think deGrom would be a better fit than re-signing Trea
Mark P
9:39
The Dodgers, of course, have the money to spend big on other areas if they want.  If they did let Turner walk, Lux might be an in-house pick to move to SS, but a case can be made that LA might overall prefer him as a second baseman.

Mets regretting not going all in at the deadline? Haha
Mark P
9:41
Mets fans probably aren't in the mood for optimism right now, but NY is 40-25 in the second half.  That's a great run of baseball, but it looks like the Braves are just greater.  While it's more than just down to one player, the Starling Marte injury might be a real turning point in the Mets' season

Oniel Cruz.  Frustrating talent or future star?  What say you, Mark?
Mark P
9:43
I think he has tons of potential, except he likely isn't a long-term shortstop.  It might take a position change to really unlock his bat, as we've seen with other players who hit better when they're less stressed on defense

Do you think my cousin Donnie Baseball would make a good manager for the Blue Jays?
Mark P

At this point, looks like Toronto will just keep Schneider

Will Dodgers Put Gonsolin in the bullpen this postseason?
Mark P
9:46
They've said that the best case scenario is that Gonsolin will be able to pitch as many as four innings, so he won't be used in a traditional starter's role anyway.  Now, whether that means he'll be an actual reliever, or a "starter" but with another pitcher piggybacking behind him, who knows....the Dodgers tend to be open to any and all options in postseason baseball

How are articles assigned here? Does each writer get assigned certain teams?
Mark P
9:48
Nope.  If you're on MLBTR duty, you're covering any news that breaks about any team.

When it comes to items like Offseason Outlook pieces, we do tend to divvy them up based on who is most familiar with the teams in question (i.e. Tim gets the Chicago teams, Steve gets the Twins, I get the Blue Jays, etc.)
Mark P
9:48
New York or Chicago pizza? Or other
Mark P
9:49
At the risk of costing myself the White Sox managerial job, I'm not a big fan of Chicago pizza. Too much sauce for me.

I have a faint memory of eating some pizza at a "genuine New York pizza place" back when I was a kid, but for all I can recall, it might have been a Sbarro's like Michael Scott

Will teams like the Rays be worse next year with the shift limitations? It seems like they thrive off of data-driven baseball, so I'm curious if any rules that hamper that style of play will hamper them significantly.
Mark P
9:52
It'll be fascinating to see how teams adjust to the shift rules, and it might end up being one of the more underrated storylines of the offseason.  Will plus defensive players suddenly have more value, since they'll be better suited to a more straight-up defensive alignment?  Will teams shy away from more bat-first types?

Knowing the Rays, they've already made plans and are preparing to adjust accordingly.  It isn't like Tampa to be behind on a trend.

Do you think there's any chance the Nats pull what the Texas Rangers did and go spend a bunch of money a year early, but at least you have some things in place when the young guys are ready? The Nats already had a lower payroll coming into the year and without Soto, Bell, Cruz, C.Hernandez, W.Harris, J.Ross, and Doolittle that is about an extra $60 million not allocated for.
Mark P
9:53
Same scenario as the Angels....probably isn't likely that the Nats make any big expenditures with their ownership situation in flux.

How are the Rockies so insular and contrarian? The minor league talent has improved the last 3 years, but the player development and major league signings have been terrible. It seems they are run 100% like a buisness.
Mark P
9:56
From a coverage standpoint, I appreciate that some teams operate in a completely different fashion than most other clubs, just for variety's sake.  But, if you're a Rockies fan, can't imagine it's too fun seeing the team make such curious moves.
Mark P
9:56
Cubs have a lot of average level starting pitching depth. Any chance they trade away some of them? (Hendricks, Stroman, Steele, Thompson, Sampson, Wesneski, Assad, Alzolay, Mills)
Mark P
9:57
Aha, time for me to bust out the "you can never have too much pitching" cliche!  If the Cubs make another Stroman-esque signing, there's probably an argument for one of two of those names to be packaged in a deal elsewhere.  But, since there isn't much proven experience in that group and the Cubs don't know what they're getting from Hendricks next year, I wouldn't count on much movement

JT Realmuto is just the second 20-20 catcher EVER! That needs  to get more love
Mark P

That is indeed a fun stat.  Trivia note: Ivan Rodriguez is the only other 20-20 catcher

Marcelo Mayer, or so they hope

What kind of return could the Orioles get for Anthony Santander and what teams might want him?
Mark P
10:05
Very nice year for Santander, and not even a bounce-back season since this is the first time he's been good over a full season (rather than an abbreviated 2020).  He has two arb years remaining, and while he'll get a nice raise from $3.15MM, he's still quite affordable.

This makes him a good candidate to just stay with the Orioles, since I'm doubtful they're going to go nuts with their payroll this winter.  As much as Baltimore might be looking to sell high, if they believe Santander has turned a corner, they might want to benefit from that themselves as they look to contend

Trade for Corbin Burnes or sign deGrom?
Mark P
10:08
Obviously depends on how much I'm allowed to spend, but in a vacuum, sign deGrom.  He'll cost just money and a QO draft pick, whereas Burnes will cost a haul in young talent, and potentially a fortune in a couple of years if my hypothetical front office extended him

Will Trea Turner be the best CF on the FA market?
Mark P
10:10
I like the creative thinking, but it has been year since Turner played CF, and he wasn't exactly an ace fielder out there.

Is Joe Maddon a fit with the ChiSox? Thanks Mark.
Mark P
10:12
This would make some sense, if the White Sox want to stick with a more old-school but still modern approach
