Mardrigal for Kelenic?
Mark P
10:29
This is one of those offers where I feel like neither team would do it, even if it makes some sense on paper

Happy thanks giving to you and your family, who do you think the Astros could target if they trade from their starting pitching depth? And do you think they should? That’s kind of how they won this year, great starting pitching and a killer bullpen.

Janine from Ghostbusters: WE GOT ONE!

/the "you can never have enough pitching" alarm sounds
10:31
If Verlander signs elsewhere, Houston will probably stand pat with the rotation, or maybe even add a veteran arm for depth before the trade deadline. If JV re-signs, a case can be made for the Astros to move someone, but they also had a lot of good rotation health last year.  Can't count on that scenario two years in a row.

Why won’t Chaim Bloom sign home grown players to long term contracts?  X is about to leave and Raffy could be next
Mark P
10:34
It isn't only Bloom's call, naturally.  It's an ownership-level decision for deals that big
Owners revenue

any Insights you can provide into what franchises make with merch sales, ticket sales, tv deals, concesssions/alcohol versus what they spend on players and coaching and scouting? How does revenue sharing factor in? Would love to see a piece like this on one team or across teams if possible
Mark P
10:35
Teams (as you might expect) keep this information very close to the vest.  The Braves, however, do make some of this info publicly available, since they're owned by a publicly-traded corporation

The dbacks have been needing a catcher for years. I think they are ready to move on from Kelly. Any chance they would consider trading McCarthy or Thomas for Gabriel Moreno or a top prospect catcher?
Mark P
10:37
I've been waving the "Moreno-for-Corbin Carroll" banner since a reader suggested it in a chat a few weeks ago.
Griffey

How am I usually overlooked when people name their baseball Rushmores?
Mark P
10:37
With all due respect to the great Ken Griffey Jr., I don't see any case where he's one of the four best players ever, or biggest icons ever, or whatever your criteria is for a "baseball Mt. Rushmore"

Are you more likely to answer creative questions or do you pick at random. While I'm at it, what chance would you give to Baltimore to spend more then 35-40 million in FA dollars???
Mark P
10:39
If you mean on a total FA contract, I think they definitely top $35-40MM.  If you mean "will they raise payroll by $35-$40MM in new free agent dollars in 2023," probably not

NOt even a Mariners Rushmore?
Mark P
10:39
Well, okay, yeah, Griffey makes a Mariners Rushmore.  :)

Tapia and Candelario to the Cubs? Add come left handed hitting
Mark P
10:40
"Hitting" is maybe a reach given how both guys performed in 2022.  But, Candelario might not be a bad change of scenery guy....he was putting up good numbers as recently as 2021

Do you think the Rangers role with a few question marks in LF? Or do they try to nail that position down by signing a guy like Haniger or Benintendi ?
Mark P
10:41
I think they sign someone.

Which division will be most hotly contested in 2023?
Mark P

Easy pick is the AL East again

Padres need to replace Clevinger and Manea. What options do they have?
Mark P
10:44
Well, they've been linked to Kodai Senga, and the re-signed Nick Martinez might take one of those open rotation spots right away
Hmmm

Joe Mauer a HOF'er?

No (47.4% | 230 votes)

My four-year old son calls him the Phillie Silly. Maybe that could be his even zanier cousin or something.

Local Philadelphia actress/comedian Dee Reynolds has expressed interest in auditioning for this role.  Nothing can possibly go wrong!

Orioles kick the tires on a grienke or paxton?
Mark P
10:49
Paxton isn't actually a free agent.  He exercised a player option in his contract to remain with Boston in 2023.

As for Greinke, he's an interesting veteran mentor and he was still decently effective on the mound in 2022.  But, my hunch is that Greinke returns to KC, and the Orioles aim higher with their pitching targets
Gramps
10:50
Speaking of Kodai, has he actually met any teams?
Mark P
10:52
He's met with the Mets (no pun intended), Padres, and seemingly the Giants.  Probably at least a few others that we don't know about, and probably a few more beyond that (like the Yankees) who might not have had an in-person meeting yet, but Senga's camp has at least had some talks

Is this a concession stand option at the Rogers Centre?
Mark P

It sure is.
Chance for the playoffs
10:53
Do you see the moves the Angels have made as putting in contention for a playoff spot? Does this increase their chances of extending Shohei if they’re successful or on that path for a mid season extension?
Mark P
10:55
I like what LAA has done thus far, but they still face a tough path to the playoffs.  Houston has to be the AL West favorite, Seattle is in great shape for a playoff return, and Texas is planning to stock up on talent as well.  So that's just the AL West, not counting all the other good teams in the American League battling for wild card spots
The biggest factor for the Angels might just be getting a fully healthy Trout, Rendon, and Ohtani all at full power over an entire season
JIMBO
10:56
Do you think the Braves will just sit tight and not sign anybody major this year?
Mark P
10:57
Maybe not "sign," but they'll bring in someone else in a trade, if nothing else.  Atlanta is clearly trying to win now, so Anthopoulos won't stop being aggressive
