Cardinals Fan

It is maddening as a Cardinal fan that they develop guys so well, then call them up only to spot start or get 5 AB's a week for 3 years, then say, "they didn't pan out" before shipping them off for nothing. Why do they do this? We have probably 6 guys in the OF who could start in MLB right now & they will all split tim (other than Walker). Winn will probably rot behind Donovan & Edman, etc... they need pitching SO bad, why don't they upgrade with these players who won't play anyway?

In fairness to the Cardinals, they dealt Bader for Montgomery just last year.  And right now St. Louis is in the (enviable) position of having so many good young players that they themselves are probably still trying to determine who is a keeper and who is a potential trade chip, if they did make another deadline move for pitching
9:00
Also, it's April.  If the Cardinals called a team about pitching now, the other team is going to ask for Jordan Walker.  The asking prices usually don't become more reasonable until a lot closer to the deadline.

What do the blue jays doing Manoah continues to be less than he was last year?
Mark P
9:04
It's only been a few starts, but Manoah seems to have an issue in letting things really snowball once he starts to get into trouble.  It is hopefully an issue that can be controlled, since the Jays rotation becomes even more of a question mark if Manoah can't be relied upon

Be honest, you guys have a bottle of Dom Perignon for when Adell gets traded, right? Also, how have you not done an April Fool's post where he was "traded"? Imagine the insanity if you posted an "Adell traded to Yankees for Jasson Dominguez straight up." The site might implode from comment traffic...or traffic in general.

The minor boost in web traffic isn't nearly worth the hit to MLBTR's credibility, which is why we stay away from April Fool's pranks.

How much stock are you taking in this Nolan Gorman breakout? looks like a completely different hitter at the plate and in the field. Playing with confidence and swagger. Clutch hits and should handle the 5 hole in the lineup moving forward. thoughts?
Mark P
9:08
This ties into a pair of topics discussed earlier....the Cardinals' prospect depth, and how we shouldn't discount prospects after a slow start to their careers.

It should surprise absolutely nobody that Gorman is breaking out.  He was a top-75 prospect staple for years, and he drew tons of hype when he was called up.  And then, after he cooled down after his big first month, it seems like fans collectively forgot about him, or wrote him off.
HOF QUESTION
9:09
When all is said and done will G. Stanton make the HOF? He already has almost 400 HR’s and despite his injury concerns has prodigious power…wil 500 HR’s be enough?
Mark P
9:10
I'd lean towards Stanton not getting in.  His injuries and "what might have been" will loom larger in the minds of voters, even if his final counting stats for his career will end up being very good.  Stanton might have more of a shot with a veterans committee years down the line.

At what point does TheBum get replaced? He’s getting paid regardless, but there are better options.

Zach Davies' injury might've bought Bumgarner some time, since the D'Backs are already now dipping into their younger rotation depth.  Not to mention the bullpen injuries sapping the pitching depth in general.

Lovullo also gave Bumgarner a vote of confidence the other day, for what it's worth.  (Though it's not like a manager is going to throw a pitcher under the bus.)  If the D'Backs gets more confidence in their younger guys to carry the load, or if they acquire someone at the deadline, Bumgarner's time might be up

Is it too late into the season to lock Alonso up long term?
Mark P
9:16
Probably, unless the team wanted to get something done at the All-Star break and drove the proverbial dump truck of money up Alonso's driveway.  Alonso is still under control through 2024, so I'd expect the Mets to prioritize extension talks next winter, and the team surely doesn't have hesitation about paying top dollar.

Anthony Franco wrote about Alonso as an extension candidate back in February: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/02/extension-candidate-pete-alonso...
Angels
9:17
If/when the angels don’t resign Ohtani do you think they use that money to continue depth signing or go for a big name free agent/trade.
Mark P
9:18
If they lose Ohtani, I can absolutely see Arte Moreno chasing another big name player to try and make up for the departure.  That could be good news for any free agents (in an overall thin class) looking to score a payday, or for other teams looking to unload a star on the trade market

Which marlins starter is the most likely to be dealt this year
Mark P

None?  Moving Lopez was probably their big move in terms of moving a prominent starter for hitting

If Ohtani doesn’t resign with the Angels…does Trout force his way out?
Mark P
9:22
Only Trout knows the extent of his frustration, since while we can obviously assume that he hates losing, we don't know if he would be so fed up that he'd demand a trade.
Nationals Fan
9:22
The Nats have something of a position battle in left field between Alex Call, who has more speed/defense and takes the most walks on the team, and Stone Garrett, who's off to a hot start and has more power. As a team that's clearly in a rebuilding mode, how do you choose between those skill sets when it comes to handing out playing time?
Mark P
9:23
My answer involves giving both playing time in the corner outfield, and perhaps sitting Lane Thomas a bit more often.

Who is the Red Sox next extension candidate?
Mark P
9:26
Once Bello is back and healthy and gets a few starts under his belt, I can see the Red Sox pursuing some midseason extension talks.

Tigers off to another bad start.  Can Tigers trade some guys to jump-start the extended rebuild? Rodriquez? Turnbull? Cisnero? Lange? Catcher Haas?  2B/1B Schooop? Give Tigers fans some hope for '25 or '26?!
Mark P
9:28
The Tigers are the dark horse as most fascinating team to watch at deadline time.  Obviously their list of moves will be impacted by how many of their players are performing well and have value, but if the team as a whole is still struggling, I wonder if Scott Harris has the green light to more or less blow things up.

Starting over with another rebuild wouldn't be popular in Detroit.....or, maybe it would, given how Tigers fans seem to have almost universally given up on this roster and are aching for a change.

If Tatis suspension is for MLB games, why was he allowed to play preseason MLB games?
Mark P
9:29
Because preseason games aren't official games

9:31
What's going on with the Giants relief pitching? Are they taxed out because Kapler is pulling starters after their second time through a lineup?
Mark P
9:33
SF isn't in the top half of the league in bullpen innings, so overuse isn't really the problem.  But, on paper, the Giants bullpen didn't look overly good going into the season, and they've lived up to that modest billing so far
Drew
9:34
Is it already kind of looking like the Nats won the Soto trade?
Mark P
9:35
It'll realistically be years before we can really answer that question.  And, Soto's (relative) lack of success in San Diego is only one side of it...if none of the youngsters Washington got back develop into reliable big leaguers, the trade isn't a win on the Nats' end
Phils Phan
9:37
Could Bryce Harper legitimately be a long-term solution for the Phils at first base? With Hoskins being a free agent at the end of this season, it may free up the Phillies to spend that money in a variety of places and allow them more flexibility. Or is Harper at first a short-term solution?
