Perez seemed at least open to waiving his no-trade clause during the summer, and the Royals had at least some talks with other clubs.  So even if I'd still say a trade is unlikely, the door being cracked open a little bit is notable.

Rays trade Randy Arozarena to Giants for Joey Bart and ______.
Mark P
8:35
Tampa would want someone like Harrison or Whisenhunt.  Three years of control over Arozarena is a mighty big trade chip for the Rays to give up.

Would a different team have offered Maeda a QO? If he’s going to get 18/year what’s another couple mil for one season?
Mark P
8:37
The Twins might not have wanted to risk Maeda accepting the QO, and putting $20.325MM onto their payroll in a winter when they're trying to cut costs.

Maeda is one of my favorite free agents of the offseason, btw.  Obviously there's a lot of injury risk, but I have a feeling he's going to be a big get for whichever team makes the signing

Just curious, is there a reason in chats you have your name as Mark P instead of Mark Polishuk?

Just in case Mark Prior has to fill in for me one of these weeks

Odds of the Tigers making a playoff push next year?
Mark P
8:40
Naturally some moves need to be made, but Detroit has an underrated core already in place.  Wouldn't shock me to see the Tigers finally back in contention next year

since you say Atlanta couldn’t get Mayer or lawlar, what kind of return could Atlanta get for fried and what team do you think he’d be dealt to?
Mark P
8:42
I'd made this point before, but Atlanta is more likely to just keep Fried and let him walk to free agency (as they did with Freeman and Swanson) rather than trade him.  Keep in mind, the Braves arguably need pitching even with Fried still in the rotation, so they'd have to even more arms if they moved him

Do you think ATL is built for the regular season and not the post? If so, what's one specific move you'd make, e.g. focus on another starter who can throw hard (as in 96+ mph).
Mark P
8:44
Uh, they won the World Series two years ago with much of this same core.  So sure, they're "built for the postseason" already.  Seems like the Braves' problem the last couple of years were some ill-timed pitching injuries, or maybe the Phillies just having their number

What would it take to trade for Manoah?  Would Stowers be enough to get him to Baltimore?
Mark P
8:45
No, because a) Manoah has shown a higher ceiling at the MLB level than Stowers has, and b) I can't imagine the Blue Jays moving Manoah to a division rival

Salvador Perez to the White Sox seems like a given. Would the Royals hold out for a better prospect package while sending no money, seeing as he's a World Series hero, and they'd be trading him in their division?
Mark P
8:47
A "given" seems like a stretch, but moving Perez at this point does seem like a wise baseball move, even if there's some emotional hit from the Royals' perspective
Angels
8:48
Do you think Angels will sign one of the top pitchers?
Mark P
8:49
It might all come down to money, of course, but if I'm a top free agent pitcher who is getting comparable offers from proven contenders, I'm signing somewhere other than Anaheim
8:50
If Ohtani re-signs it's maybe a different story, but still....

Ryu have any left in the tank as a bounce back candidate in Pittsburgh?
Mark P
8:51
Ryu might prefer a contender to a Pirates, and Pittsburgh (as much as they need pitching) might prefer someone with less of an injury history.  So it's an interesting idea, but not sure if it's a true fit here.  I do like Ryu as a good possibility for a bounce-back, however

Cubs trade Morel if they sign Hoskins?
Mark P
8:55
Feels like Morel might be the odd man out even if the Cubs make another move besides a Hoskins signing.  He's an interesting trade chip, and arguably kind of expendable given the rest of Chicago's infield

Instead of Ohtani he opens the checkbook for Montgpmery,  Hader and a surprise signing of Whit merrifield to DH and spot Carter against lefties and the Rangers win 3 more before 2030.
Mark P
8:58
Merrifield doesn't hit enough to be a DH candidate, but as a general backup type, sure.

And to your broader point, the Rangers getting multiple pieces instead of the big Ohtani splash makes sense.  Obviously Texas will certainly explore getting Ohtani if possible, yet they're a team for whom Ohtani is almost a luxury, not a direct need

Do you have any bold but realistic takes for the Dbacks this off-season?
Mark P

They sign Jeimer to play 3B, or add Sonny Gray to help stabilize the rotation

Scott Harris seems to have dropped the ball so far. I don't think the tigers should spend big money but he needs to show something this winter? He inherited all the top prospects time to make a real move
Mark P
9:02
Remember the situation Harris walked into last year...a team who had spent big the winter prior, except their team almost en masse was injured or played poorly in 2022.  Can't blame Harris (or ownership) for taking a step back for a year to re-evaluate things, and to see exactly what the problem was.

Detroit seems in somewhat better shape now that the pitchers have gotten healthier and a couple of the position players have started producing.  Whether that's enough to convince Harris and ownership that the time is right to start getting more aggressive, who knows
