This is an interesting idea, except I don't think Minnesota does that in a one-for-one
Mets fan
9:01
Do you see the Mets more willing to part with some of their recent prospect capital now that Kris Gross has joined from Houston?
Mark P
9:02
In general, a new PBO/GM coming into an organization makes it more likely that prospects drafted under the previous regime are moved, since the new boss has no ties to these prospects.  So whether that means Baty, Vientos, etc. are perhaps trade chips now remains to be seen, but Steve Cohen has talked about the importance about building the farm

Do you think the Dodgers care about exceeding the luxury tax lines this year? Even with 75 mil to spend, if they do land Ohtani, that’s 50 mil gone at least and feels like they need 2 starters- 25 mil ain’t what it used to be?
Mark P
9:05
The Dodgers will definitely be over the tax line.  Ideally they were hoping to duck under the line last winter to reset their penalties, but the Bauer ruling ruined that plan.

The club's pitching needs are so great that even if they don't get Ohtani, I don't see LA pivoting to trying to get under the tax threshold again.  The Dodgers want to win, and the 2020 title only did so much to manage fan impatience

Do you see any chance of the Reds signing Montgomery? If not some names more likely?
Mark P
9:07
I actually had Cincinnati signing Gray in the FA picks contest, guessing that the Reds might be willing to spend a bit more on a known quantity.

But, I don't see the Reds a big pitching signing otherwise.  A pitching trade could or should be on the radar, however

How often should I be refreshing MLBTR this winter?

You should be making unique visits to the site, that's better for our numbers!  :)

Do you think the phillies have a legitimate shot at yamamoto after resigning nola?
Mark P
9:10
Not zero chance, but they're on the back burner of candidates in my view

I too thought Nola was StL-bound. Seemed like the perfect fit. Now what for the Cards?
Mark P
9:12
Keep trying on Montgomery, Gray, or maybe even Yamamoto.  Plus secondary FA pitchers, plus trade targets.  One big name leaving the board doesn't leave the Cardinals out in the cold.

Any chance Sonny Gray goes to the D-Backs?
Mark P
9:13
It's an interesting possibility.  Gray would be a tremendous add to Arizona's staff, and since he'll cost less than the other top arms, he might fall nicely into the Snakes' price range

Dylan Cease is understandibly drawing a lot of trade interest. But is there any real trade market for Eloy Jimenez and Yoán Moncada? I feel like there may be but late in the offseason once other names come off the board and only if the Sox eat a lot of their contracts.
Mark P
9:16
Moncada is a much tougher sell since he's owed $29MM next season ($24MM salary, $5MM buyout of his club option).  He hasn't shown any of the kind of consistent performance that might inspire a team to take a flier on him and absorb that contract, not unless it's part of a proverbial bad contract swap
9:17
I explored more on Eloy the other day, but in general, he's shown a higher ceiling at the plate and he has more team control via his club options. The only questions with Jimenez are his ability to stay healthy and whether he's a DH-only guy or a part-time left fielder.

This finally the off season that Jo Adell gets traded?
Mark P
9:18
I feel like if any move was going to happen to interrupt one of my chats, it'll be a Jo Adell trade, since the baseball gods have a sense of humor

With the Athletics moving to Vegas what do you think of the team changing thier name to the Aces? Close to the As but plays up the Vegas connection.
Mark P
9:19
The Athletics name is the only connective tissue for this franchise over its long history and now its fourth different city.  I'd prefer they just keep it

Who do you see as the most likely SP to sign with Detroit? I know there are too many options to pick for sure, but who seems most likely?
Barry
9:21
Could the Phillies resign Lorenzen because they have no obvious starter if one of their 5 starters gets hurt?
Mark P
9:23
Oops, posted those both at once.  I'd say that a Lorenzen return to Philly is quite doubtful, unless he's still on the market late in the offseason when your hypothetical SP emerges in Spring Training.

But, Lorenzen just re-signing in Detroit seems like it might be a fun idea. He's not going to cost much, and the Tigers can add a known veteran quantity to the rotation
Chris Getz
9:24
What kind of a return can I expect for Luis Robert Jr.?  If Mike Elias calls who should I ask for from the mighty Orioles system?
Mark P
9:25
One healthy season won't erase the concerns over Robert's durability, but he is exactly the kind of player the Orioles would likely be willing to give up a true prospect haul to acquire.  Pretty much every O's prospect short of Holliday could be floated
Jay-bird
9:26
Can you see a Michael Lorenzen return to the Tigers? What would it take?
Mark P
9:26
I only saw this message after posting that Lorenzen/Tigers idea, but Jay-bird, great minds think alike!

9:28
So a lot of people had the cardinals connected to Nola for obvious reasons. But MO acted like there wasn't much to it based on what he said. So where does this leave the cardinals to look next?
Mark P
9:29
In fairness, Mozeliak isn't going to say we wanted him so badly, I'm devastated!"

Or, if the Cards didn't make much of a push for Nola, it could be that another pitcher has attracted their attention
Joe Mack
9:30
The Casas rookie campaign was a bright spot last year, but with Devers ability at third a potential issue. How likely do you see a trade featuring Casas to provide some roster flexibility, and what is a reasonable return?
Mark P
9:31
This is another "new GM in town" situation, as it could be that Breslow is willing to move Casas since he wasn't the one who drafted and developed him.  (Though, Casas also predated Bloom's tenure in Boston, but Bloom had a mandate to build up the farm.)
9:33
It doesn't seem like the Sox are quite ready yet to move Devers to first base, plus there's always the DH spot.  The Sox also won't want to deal Casas too soon, in case he more fully breaks out into a very good hitter
Big Contracts
9:33
since the A rod contract, machado, trout , etc most big ticket free agents have turned in some very impressive years statistically speaking but very little team success . Is the massive contract free agent overrated ?
Mark P
9:34
Yes and no.  You're right that a lot of megadeals don't work out for teams.....except for the ones that do, like the Rangers winning just this past season

Jackson Holliday out shines his father Matt, true or false?
Mark P
9:35
I'm going to say no not out of any disrespect for Jackson, but because Matt Holliday was a fantastic player.
