Why would Cleveland trade Josh Naylor when they need power hitters?
Ben Cherington
8:43
What will it take to bring Naylor to Pittsburgh?
Mark P
8:45
Needless to say, that Paul Hoynes report from earlier today has led to a lot of Naylor questions in the queue!
8:46
For two years of Naylor, Cleveland likely asks for (as is their pattern) at least one MLB-ready younger player, and at least one longer-term kind of prospect.  It might seem wild to think of the Bucs moving Henry Davis so quickly, yet that's the kind of asks the Guardians would be making

Could roki be the big splash no one saw coming for braves
Mark P
8:48
He'd be a different kind of big splash, because Sasaki would still count as an international signing.  I don't know who has the most available pool space left when the market opens on January 15, but the actual dollar figure might not matter all that much for Sasaki (as it did with Ohtani years ago when he came to the majors).
There's still so much unclear about this Sasaki situation that speculating about landing spots is probably a long shot right now

Verlander left Houston as a FA, if the Astros are out of contention at the deadline, does he ask to be traded?
Mark P
8:49
Possibly, though I doubt Houston is going to be out of contention.

Is there any chance the Reds sign Bellinger?  They desperately need outfield help.
Mark P
8:50
If the Reds were actually willing to spend that kind of money (which they aren't), it would be on Montgomery or Snell, not a position player

How likely would an off season of Yamamoto, Lee, and Chapman be for the giants? There has been a lot of love from the coaching and front office staff directed towards Chapman. They reportedly are also very high on Lee, and have a huge need for cf defense. The giants would end up with the "star" they have been looking for in Yamamoto, would vastly improve their defense with Chapman and Lee, and bringing in two highly rated international players would be a huge draw in the bay area. Could you see this, and would it make sense for the giants?
Mark P
8:52
Any of those moves make sense, and even all three at once isn't implausible.  The Giants have plenty of money to spend, and an obvious desire for starpower.

Though, a word about the "starpower" aspect.  If you're a SF fan, does it really matter to you if the team is led by a big name or two?  If that same anonymous Giants roster last year had won 91 games, would there have been any complaints?

Why do the Cubs refuse to meet market value on players? it seems that they’re only looking for Team favorable deals, is the organization broke?
Mark P
8:54
In fairness, they did spend big on Swanson just last offseason.  And every team is looking for "team favorable deals" if possible.

What do the astros do with the expiring contracts of Bregman and Altuve?
Mark P
8:55
The common thought seems to be that they'll extend Altuve but let Bregman head into free agency
MLBTR Predictions
8:56
MLBTR was 2 years over and $172 million under on the Ohtani prediction.  That's going to throw off the prediction model...
Mark P
8:57
In hindsight, the wild card of the Ohtani pursuit was that we should've seen Lionel Messi's Barcelona deal as his target contract

What should the Orioles do with their glut of outfielders? Seems like Kjerstad, Cowser, and Stowers are all in search of playing time next year and in '25 and '26, Bradfield, Beavers, and Fabian should be ready.
Mark P
8:59
Any of Santander, Hays, or maybe Mullins could be traded this offseason for just this season.  Lots of teams are looking for hitting help, and Baltimore has outfielders on offer.

The Cubs were my pick in the free agent guess contest, fwiw.  If you want the opinion of a guy who has a cool....two choices right.

Did the Dodgers just ruin baseball?
Mark P
9:04
It was about a year ago that there were a lot of "did the Mets and Padres ruin baseball?" comments, and we saw what happened to those teams last season

Can you clarify the Harper extension talks when he's signed through 2031...I can't see the logic here
Mark P
9:05
It struck me as Boras and Harper trying to strike while the iron was hot for some extra money, when Harper is at the peak of his popularity with the Phillies.  Harper is locked up for eight more seasons....there won't be more than a handful of deals signed all winter that are longer than eight years.

Cardinals get Woo, Yankees get Brendan Donovan, Mariners get Gleyber. Who says no? Who would need prospects to do it?
Mark P
9:06
The Mariners aren't moving Woo for one season for Gleyber Torres

What else do you see the Pirates doing? Still need 2 SP and a 1B at least. Naylor would be awesome. Have $30-40M to spend too and need to be aggressive
Mark P
9:11
It would be cool to see the Pirates make a statement type of move like trading for a controllable young player who has already shown what he can do at the MLB level.  But, the likelier and perhaps wiser move is for the Bucs to spread their available money out to address several needs.

This doesn't mean some aggression couldn't still happen if an unexpected opportunity arises, or if there's one particular target that Pittsburgh really feels can help

I read today that San Diego is having financial difficulties due to the RSN fallout. Do you think they would consider moving Tatis Jr. ? If so do you think a package from Boston of Tanner Houck, Cedanne Rafaella and Jared Duran would be enough plus of course taking into consideration the salary relief. It gives them a starter they need and two young outfielders that they need since the Soto trade. Also all controllable for multiple years.
Mark P
9:14
Ha, I think I commended on the (remote) possibility of a Tatis trade in my last chat and the comments section was not pleased with my response.  But sure, let's open this can of worms again!

The simple question is that the Padres' financial picture has a lot of uncertainty right now, so a Tatis deal can't be entirely ruled out.  Not necessarily this winter, but maybe in a year or two if the club decides to cut payroll more drastically.  Also, to give Tatis another year back on the field and perhaps performing even better to increase any possible trade value.  Or, performing so well that it just entrenches him further as the one Padres building block that isn't being moved anywhere.

Do you think the Reds would trade Marte or Encarnacion- Strand?
Mark P
9:17
Sure, if the right offer came along.  But that could be said about just about any of the Reds' young players, if the team was presented with a really great offer.

What are the odds the Reds could get in on Corbin Burnes and if not who is the most likely to toe the slab for them next year..Glasnow, Bieber or Cease?
Mark P
9:19
I have my doubts that the Brewers move Burnes within the division, so getting one of the Cease/Bieber/Glasnow gang seems likelier for Cincy

Have you heard any serious connection between White Sox and Yariel Rodriguez that makes this signing likely?
