Now that the Camden Yards lease is finalized, there's at least a chance the Orioles might be a little more open to spending.  Do I think this suddenly means a huge extension for Rutschman or Henderson?  Probably not, but it might make Baltimore a little more flexible on spending on a free agent, or perhaps a larger-salaried player in a trade

Was IKF signed to be the Jays starting third baseman in 2024?
Mark P
9:18
No, since it's hard to imagine the Jays would go all-defense on a second position.  (The first position is LF, since while the Jays obviously think/hope Varsho will improve, his 2023 numbers were so disastrous that it's hard to just assume significant improvement.)

What did you do for New Years?
Mark P
9:19
Watched my beloved Green Bay Packers beat up on the Vikings.  Given how poorly Green Bay looked for so much of the season, it's hard to fathom they're a win away from a playoff spot.

Cleveland winning the central this year? Does florial contribute significantly?
Mark P
9:21
Too early to tell on the playoff chances, and as per that poll from earlier in the chat, only 23.9% of you think Cleveland takes the crown.

Florial is a good addition, however.  Not a big price to pay for a player who might yet break out in a new environment.  Florial doesn't need to be a star, as the Guardians would be greatly helped by just getting average production from an outfielder.

Why does sites like this and the sports media act like The Marlins fired Kim EG when that is not what happened
Mark P
9:23
Ng wasn't "fired," but when ownership says "hey, we'll pick up our end of the mutual option but we're going to demote you behind a president of baseball operations," obviously they must've figured Ng would depart

If a team were to trade for me this offseason what kind of extension do you think I might land?
Mark P
9:24
Kim might prefer to wait for free agency next year, and see what he can land on the open market.  A team trading for Kim now would have to pay him handsomely to keep him out of free agency

Over/Under on 2 more trades for Trader Jerry before the offseason is complete.

Always take the over on a Jerry Dipoto trading spree

any possible big moves left for the Mets or just tinkering and upside plays until next year?
Mark P
9:25
As noted earlier, an Alonso trade wouldn't be truly shocking
But in terms of "big moves" solely to upgrade the 2024 team, it doesn't appear like that's their plan

Jesus Luzardo and Teoscar to Boston seems very possible. Does a rotation of Luzardo Bello Gio Crawford Pivetta make playoffs ?
Mark P
9:28
"Very possible" for Luzardo seems like a bit of a reach, since I'd imagine Miami would only take a huge offer to move him.

And that rotation on paper is okay, but pretty unproven

Just a curious question, but how often do GM's call other GM's in regards to trades? Is it an everyday thing? Are there certain GM's who never speak? Can you give a thought on how you may think that all sort of works. Thanks.
Mark P
9:31
Obviously it depends on the individuals involved, as you'll see some teams frequently line up on deals because they get along well, or have a similar view on player evaluations.  This doesn't mean that a GM will make an unfavorable trade just to help their buddy out or something, yet as with all sorts of business transactions, personal relationships can matter as much as the numbers

9:33
What is the next move for the Orioles, starting pitching, bullpen or bench experience?
Mark P
9:34
Rotation, bullpen, bench in that order.  With a pretty notable gap between #2 and #3, since as the younger players emerge, some of the current veterans might become the "bench experience"

What is the Rockies path out of non-contention in the west? Failure to fully commit to a rebuild will cost them talent, and they’ve had a hard enough time with pitching as it is.
Mark P
9:36
I'm not the first to write this, but it seems like the Rockies essentially an overhaul of their organization, with some fresh voices brought into oversee a rebuild.  While it's absolutely true that the Rox face unique challenges in developing and sustaining pitching due to their ballpark, maybe part of the problem is that they've been so relatively closed-off in bringing new solutions to this problem by constantly hiring from within.

Are there lingering injury concerns with Rhys Hoskins or is it going to take a few dominoes (Bellinger, Martinez) to fall before he signs with somebody?
Mark P
9:37
Probably not Bellinger as much as there are a number of veteran 1B/DH types on the market, so they might all be somewhat mutually seen as a "backup plan"
DodgerFan1
9:38
What happens to Michael Busch and Miguel Vargas this year? Play with the Dodgers, stay in minors, or traded away?
Mark P
9:38
I can see one of them dealt to address other needs (probably the rotation).

Think Boras can talk Cubs into Chapman? It seems like an ideal place for him but I don’t think Cubs like to sign QO players.
Mark P
9:41
They did just sign Swanson last year, so it's not like they're unusually adverse to QO players.  Most teams would obviously prefer to avoid surrendering draft picks when possible, but the Cubs will take the plunge in the right circumstance
9:42
And Chapman would make some sense in filling the need at third base
Jeff
9:43
Do the Giants have anything the Padres would want to get Kim?
Mark P
9:43
Plenty of young pitching, sure.  But the Giants probably aren't keen on trading away a ton (to a division rival, no less) for a player who is only controlled through 2024.

9:44
Why haven't the Marlins done anything significant? When will they?
Mark P
9:46
A new GM coming into an organization usually takes a bit of time to evaluate things before swinging any truly big moves.  Plus in the Marlins' case, the priority for Bendix seems to be restocking the minor league pipeline.

Though to be fair, Bendix actually has been pretty proactive thus far in making some moves, if nothing headline-grabbing.  This is the classic Rays style that Miami is trying to emulate by hiring Bendix in the first place --- building around the margins, trying to raise the talent floor, and hoping that an under-the-radar move can pay off big

9:47
you see the tigers signing Matt Chapman or trading for a 3B like Issac paredes?
Mark P
9:48
I don't see either as likely, though Paredes would be the less unlikely?  Detroit wants to see what it has at 2B/3B with its prospects, so making a big addition to block one of the positions doesn't seem likely.

That said, I have suggested in the past that the Tigers could perhaps move one of Jung, Keith, or Malloy in a trade for a proven infield piece if they think they can win the AL Central now.

What is your favorite world series in the last 10 years?
Mark P
9:49
Hard to top 2016, with the Cubs breaking the curse, Cleveland almost breaking their own curse, and the epic nature of that Game 7

I also really liked seeing the Nationals break through and win it all in 2019

Wouldn't it be great for baseball if Taylor Swift fell in love with some guy who plays for the Royals?
