This is one of those situations where they will either end up looking brilliant b/c they snatch up a couple good players for nothing, or looking dumb b/c the guys they end up with struggle. Sort of like the White Sox last year. Latos, Austin Jackson, etc looked like nice values. But it didn't pan out.

Far as targeting, not clear they are really doing that at this point so much as trying to maximize what they can get at a preferred price point. Just my impression.

I'd be surprised if Gattis brought back much of value. If they really believe in him behind the plate, they won't be willing to trade him. So if they are calling teams to see if they want to take Gattis, that's a pretty good signal about what Houston thinks he's capable of as a catcher.
As a DH, he's not a very exciting player.
To be clear, I still love Oso Blanco.

I never really understood that concept, unless it involved the Pirates sort of dumping Cutch's salary b/c of the great opportunity that arose, and the Yanks being there to make a really nice value play. But that just doesn't seem to make that much sense.

I don't really know, but it's kind of funny that people are so concerned with what the Nats gave up for 5 cheap years of Eaton when it's at least arguably comparable to what the Indians gave up for 2.5 affordable but not super cheap years of an elite reliever.

Opportunities have to be there. Can't just go dumping a guy like JD Martinez for whatever you can get, when you're still a plausible contender.

It was always going to be hard to make trades from that roster, in large part due to the no trade clauses but also the age and massive numbers. This is how you see a connection to the Phillies ... hard to engineer a smooth landing for your years of competition under these circumstances.
