Rollie Fingers is the all-time champ

who is Bailey Falter?
Mark P
9:25
Bailey Falter is 27 years old, and is a professional baseball player who plays for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

I know that Finnegan and Harvey separately may not bring much back for the Nats, but what if they packaged them together? How high on the O’s prospect chain could Washington realistically go if it offered the two of them?
Mark P
9:27
Still not that high, and Finnegan's peripherals will scare off a lot of teams entirely.
9:28
Also, the chances of an Orioles/Nationals trade are pretty low, given the never-ending MASN feud.

Is Otto Lopez for real? Lot of red on that statcast page
Mark P
9:29
As someone who wondered for years why Toronto didn't give Lopez more of a look in their infield mix, it would annoy me to no end if Lopez became a good big leaguer on another team.

Very small sample size, but the Marlins will take all the good news they can get

Should the Tigers clone Kirk Gibson to fix their offense? Or just trade for a bat?
Mark P
9:30
With all respect to Kirk Gibson, if the Tigers had access to cloning technology, you'd think several other players would be ahead of him on the re-creation list.

So a trade just seems like the simpler route.  Detroit might be another good fit for someone like a Rooker

Baumann not gonna get through waivers, right?  Hate to lose him, but man...what a roster crunch for the Orioles.
Mark P
9:31
I would imagine there will be enough interest that the O's should be able to work out some sort of proper trade

What do the blue jays do to improve and become a playoff team
Mark P
9:34
This is one of those situations where my fandom and objective journalist brain don't match, as my brain notes that the Jays are still only 3.5 games out of a wild card spot.  But the fan in me notes that this team just simply can't hit, and there are too many weak links on the position player side to really fix things.

The easiest answer is just for Springer and Bichette to finally start hitting, but if that's not going to happen, you have to wonder if the front office even feels a big trade would be worth it to try and patch up a flawed roster

9:35
Brewers starting pitching will be downfall, do they spend to acquire, or ride the "B" team for the season?
Mark P
9:35
I can see the Brewers getting some kind of rotation help in the fold, if not a pricey or big-name arm

The Giants injury attrition is something else; is there going to be a quicker trigger on trades if there’s a sharp downswing pre-All-Star break? Given they have two years left together, a quick sell-off to reload for 2025 so 26 isn’t a lame duck year seems like a decent plan.
Mark P
9:38
If there's a "sharp" downswing sure, but the Giants are also still in the heat of the wild card race.  And, it seems like the injuries might have the bright side of letting Matos and Ramos play, as they've both been quite good.

(This is a situation where a Giants fan on the MLBTR staff might be having their own objective brain/fandom debate.)

9:39
Does Lee retain his rookie status now that he is injured or does time on the DL count?  I was impressed with bat to ball skills and his OF play in the games I saw
Mark P
9:40
He gets Major League service time for being on the big league injured list, so he'll no longer have rookie status.

And, my previous post shouldn't undermine the fact that the Giants have been hit badly by injuries, and it's certainly not positive that Lee's season is already done

9:40
Should the Braves be looking at acquiring pitching or hitting (considering the team’s poor start?) if so, whom?
Mark P
9:41
Pitching is a more obvious need since I have to believe their lineup will ultimately be fine.  The issue with acquiring a hitter if you're Atlanta is where does that hitter play, since almost every position on the diamond is locked down?
Dan S.
9:42
If the Orioles were to pursue Ryan Helsley at the deadline, would they need to give up a Kjerstad-caliber prospect? Or would a package of, say, Connor Norby and a couple of other non-top 10 guys work?
Mark P
9:43
Helsley is only controlled through 2025, and as good as he's been, that's still a pretty notable trade package to give up for a reliever.  That's not an offer I see the O's making
Eric
9:44
Could a constant rotation of outfielders be a way to incorporate Dominguez once he's back into the OF picture while also giving players rest without a drop in quality?
Mark P
9:44
That seems to be the likeliest tactic, even if suddenly rotating guys into the DH spot is tricky since Stanton is hitting so well.
Owen L
9:45
Does christian vazquez getting moved at the deadline make sense at all?
Mark P
9:45
The Twins would have to eat basically his whole contract at this point, so if that's the case, they might as well just stick with him as a backup catcher
Alex
9:46
Odds the Dodgers cut bait and release Chris Taylor?
Mark P
9:48
It's a good deal of money to eat, and it's worth remembering that Taylor was a useful and productive player (104 wRC+) just last season.  So I can't blame the Dodgers for sticking with him to see if Taylor can snap out of this brutal slump, but at some point, he can only get so much rope

9:49
How much do you believe, tat the owners hand tie some presidents/general managers?
Mark P
9:51
Every owner ultimately has the final call on every big move a front office makes, and increasingly we're seeing somewhat fewer "hands-on" types, as owners are learning to just leave most baseball decisions to the people they're paying to make those baseball decisions.
Jill
9:52
What moves should Cleveland make at the deadline and whom are some options?
Mark P
9:54
Getting Williams back will help in this regard, but maybe a lower-level veteran arm for rotation depth would be a good idea.  That is, of course, if the Guards don't do their usual trick of calling up some random minor league pitcher who immediately turns out to be pretty solid.

Bringing another good bat into the outfield/DH mix also seems like a good shout, since Manzardo hasn't looked great in his first taste of big league pitching.  Cleveland is another team that might fit for someone like Rooker, or, any more clear-cut veteran outfield rental player

What would you do with Springer as he looks done? Bench? Release? Keep playing him everyday?
Mark P
9:55
At the very least, take him out of the leadoff spot until he starts to produce.
Giants
9:56
Do you think Snell returns back to form when activated?
Mark P
9:56
I realize they're minor league numbers, but Snell being almost literally perfect in his two rehab starts is a very promising sign that he's now properly ramped up to pitch
