As a big fan of prospect-for-prospect challenge trades, this would be a lot of fun.  I'm actually not sure who would say no....maybe Pittsburgh just because Cherington's front office drafted Chandler, whereas Breslow wasn't there when Mayer was picked in Boston?
Trade Sanctions

Here is that trade with the record number of players:  November 17, 1954: The Orioles trade Don Larsen, Billy Hunter, Bob Turley, Mike Blyzka, Darrell Johnson, Jim Fridley, and Dick Kryhoski to the Yankees for Gene Woodling, Willie Miranda, Jim McDonald, Harry Byrd, Hal Smith, Gus Triandos, Bill Miller, Kal Segrist, Don Leppert, and Ted Del Guercio.

Whew, I'm glad I didn't have a shift on MLBTR that day.

Is there some danger for AL central teams like KC and Detroit to overstate their success this year because of how they padded their records against a very bad White Sox team? KC in particular given that they were collectively 1 game under .500 against everyone not Chicago.
Mark P
8:48
This is a fair point, and yet the White Sox will also be very bad in 2025.  The Twins also seem like they'll be taking a step back if they'll be cutting payroll.  So that leaves more room for Cleveland/Detroit/KC to score extra wins and gain an advantage over the wild card contenders from the other two divisions.

Would Valdez be able to bring a haul similar to what the Brewers got for Burnes?
Mark P
8:50
Not quite as high, but something in the general ballpark, sure

The question is whether or not the Astros want to roll the dice in going with their in-house pitching depth by moving Valdez.

Is Dipoto right to not consider trading one of Seattle's four young SP's unless they're blown away by an offer? What kind of proven bat(s) could they actually get in return from a pitching-needy team (BOS, BAL, CHI, etc.) for someone like Logan Gilbert?
Mark P
8:52
Can't blame Dipoto for wanting to keep that excellent rotation for as long as possible.  Once you trade one pitcher, all it takes is another injury and suddenly that depth is looking a lot....uh, less deep.  It could be argued that the Mariners rotation already gotten very lucky in dodging the injury bug for a couple of years now.

With every team bidding for Crochet. Wouldn’t it make sense for a team to go after Sandy Alcantara? Even though Bendix said they aren’t trading him. They have said at the “right price” a lot in past year.
Mark P
8:53
If a team made a big enough offer, Bendix would surely consider it.  But, what club is making such an offer for a pitcher coming off a Tommy John surgery?

LaMonte Wade to Pittsburgh?
Mark P
8:56
Wade is the kind of modest acquisition I could see the Pirates making, and I like what Wade brings to the table as a hitter.
Endorsement
8:57
Can a baseball team bring in corporate sponsors who guarantee the player endorsement money as Part of the contract talks?
Mark P
8:57
The league would call foul on that as a violation of the luxury tax rules

This is another Pirates-ish kind of acquisition in my view

Lefty Grove? Over Sandy Koufax?
Mark P
9:01
I mean, his literal nickname was Lefty.  That's got to qualify him right there!

The knock of Koufax is that his prime was so limited.  Granted, it was arguably the best five-year stretch of any pitcher ever, but five great years doesn't match up to a decade-plus of great years from Johnson, Carlton, Grove, and I'd put Spahn ahead of Koufax as well on the lefty list.
Hypothetical

24 year old Ken Griffey Jr. is a free agent this winter. What dollars and years would he command?
Mark P
9:02
At least $150MM more than whatever Soto ends up with
Brady

Would Cleveland trade Steven Kwan
Mark P
9:03
Extremely unlikely.  He's such a plus for the Guardians on offense and defense, and he's affordable and under team control for three more years.

I'm guessing you are not old enough to have seen Koufax. I'm 76 and no pitcher in my lifetime has been as dominant as Koufax.
Mark P

I'm also not old enough to have seen Lefty Grove.

Who’s the Nats 3B next year? House, Keiboom or Bregman?
Mark P
9:06
I'd take "none of the above" over this group, though Bregman would make a lot of sense for a Nats team that might be itching to make a big splash.  Kieboom, btw, is now a minor league free agent so he won't be back with the Nationals whatsoever

Any chance Bryce Eldridge gets called up sometime next season? Thanks Mark.
Mark P
9:08
He hasn't done much at Double-A or Triple-A in limited playing time, but the Giants seem to be aggressively promoting him.  Seems like a pretty decent chance Eldridge makes his debut before 2025 is over
Brady
9:10
Would St. Louis trade Nootbaar and what kind of return would he command
Mark P
9:11
He's got a lot of team control left and he's inexpensive, so he's not at all one of the trade chips the Cards would be looking to move.  As always, an intriguing enough offer could change this, but it's very likely that the Cardinals would say "noot enough" to most offers
(Did that make up for that missed Bead Gees joke earlier?  No?  Yeah, you're right.)

Anything on Andrew McCutchen going back to the pirates
Mark P
9:12
No word yet, and it might not happen officially for a few months.  I think Cutch didn't re-sign last winter until around Christmas or so.
9:13
He's almost certainly going back to Pittsburgh, that doesn't seem to be in question

IF the M's absolutely had to trade one of their starters for a big bat- which one would you see as the  one they sacrifice?  Castillo(+ 6-7m/yr) for westburg.
Mark P
9:14
Castillo is the one they'd probably be open to moving since it gets a lot of salary off the books.  I don't see the Orioles moving Westburg for him, since Baltimore would (rightly) argue that Westburg for one of the younger pitchers is a better match

Is Dave Dombrowski a HOF candidate?
Mark P
9:15
He'll easily get into the Hall once he retires.
Scott

What is your sense that the off-season is going to move painfully slow again? Feels like late winter until Roki Sasaki gets posted will likely bog down the pitching market because everybody's going to want to see if they can get him for "free".
