Well, I had already named them as a plausible team to pursue him. I felt like they ought to deepen the rotation and avoid leaning too hard on the young guys. With the horribly unfortunate Bettis situation, makes sense. Groundball history, etc.
Of course, I'd argue they'd be better served by dealing a lefty OF for a good starter, though that never seemed to hold much appeal and might be tough to pull off at this point.

Jeff, are you coming out to San Diego for the 2nd round of the WBC next week? I know there are a lot of commenters on this site that will be there, would be cool to set up a little MLBTR meet and greet.
Jeffrey Todd
2:27
No such plans, but I would like to plan such an event at some point. Probably east coast, since that's where Steve and I are currently located.
Maybe a future winter meetings?

If Severino doesn't make rotation, do you think they put him in the pen or send him down? Davidoff suggested he'd go down which sort of surprised me.
Jeffrey Todd
2:28
That'd let them keep him stretched out without burning up too many innings right off the bat. Refine some things. See if [whoever wins the 5th spot] works out.
2:29
Obviously the Yanks still like him as a starter, so may as well give him some leash even if he doesn't crack the rotation to start out the year.

Hey Jeff. Last Friday, when I googled the mlbtraderumors site, it had a warning saying, "this site may be hacked". However, this warning no longer appeared, as of this past Wednesday. What caused this warning to appear? Could the re-direct ads have caused this? I wanted to reach out to this site to let you guys know, but did not know how. How would I contact mlbtraderumors in the future, if I see this warning again?
Jeffrey Todd
2:30
So ... this was some kind of mixup that I don't really understand. Obviously we were able to resolve it quickly with google. The site is fine, you may use it as usual.
If you see anything like that in the future, just write an email through the contact form on the website.

Are gloating Cub fans ruining their good will at the same rate or faster than gloating Red Sox fans did after '04?
Jeffrey Todd
2:31
I'm feeling the fatigue. But I moved to Boston in '05, so I felt it there much more.

Pancakes or waffles?

No need to declare a winner. Eat one or the other every other day.

Will Coco Crisp ever sign?
Jeffrey Todd
2:32
I have a harder time seeing him getting a big league deal than Pagan, so if he's holding out for that, maybe it'll take the right injury or performance issue for a spot to open.

Should players be more willing/enthusiastic about representing their country in the WBC? Soccer has great international turnout and it really elevates those matches.
Jeffrey Todd
2:34
It's up to them. I think it's cool when they do. Soccer has such a different history that it's not really a fair comparison. I feel like MLB has done a pretty good job getting WBC to gain traction as quickly as it has. It would be great if the US players were more universally excited to play, but it's still awesome -- many other countries have buy-in, and I love seeing the less baseball inclined countries mix together their guys with scattered big leaguers.

Odds of Hosmer re-signing in KC?
Jeffrey Todd
2:35
Seems low-ish, but perhaps they'll value him more than the rest of the league. He really hasn't done all that much in the majors and doesn't hit a ton for a first baseman. Maybe the talent's there, and maybe he'll show it this year (as he did in 2015), but I'm not particularly bullish on him.

MLBTradeRumors? I'm sure there's gotta be one between the NFL free agency spam and retired player vanity pieces.
Jeffrey Todd
2:36
We use twitter for marketing, sometimes including our sister sites. Not sure why this is spam in your eyes. There's a broader trade rumors family.
2:37
Not exactly sure what "vanity pieces" you are referring to, but it's a slow time of year and we try to generate original content where we can.
Sorry to disappoint : (

Other sports, especially basketball and hockey, seem to put a big emphasis on the number a player wears on his back. Why don't you think we hear more of this in baseball?
Jeffrey Todd
2:38
Hockey and football don't really allow you to see faces. There are certainly some iconic baseball numbers, though, no?

What fatigue exactly, Jeff? How can one organization be singled out like that when homers for every team surface after every championship?
Jeffrey Todd
2:39
Of course. It's inevitable. For me, it's not the fans/commenters, it's the whole spring training act. Mind you, I think they should do what works for them. But it's pretty heavily covered and gets a bit tiresome if you read everything written about baseball like I do. (Or at least see tweets about it, ha.)

Can JB Bukauskas be the first pitcher selected in the draft this June?
Jeffrey Todd
2:40
Doesn't seem likely from what the prospect hounds say, but he's awfully impressive. I don't know jack about amateur prospects, but he's an interesting guy to me b/c he played at a school near my high school that's coached by my old coach.

Does Darvish get the Strasburg deal? Or does age go against him?
Jeffrey Todd
2:41
There's a huge age gap between them. I don't think the Rangers would go that high. If he's great this year, he could reach that in FA though.
James C
2:42
should the dbacks be concerned about greinkes diminished velocity, especially with so much money invested and his age?
Jeffrey Todd
2:42
Yes.
2:43
I mean, it's more than just velo, of course, but if there's any overall degradation in his stuff that's a big problem. He'll likely be useful regardless, but ... if he's not a current frontline starter, how do they even move him without eating an enormous sum of money/
That deal just never, ever made sense.

2:44
do you believe Joey Bats had a 3yr deal on the table?
Jeffrey Todd
2:45
Well, Jeff Passan is as trustworthy as they come. And it would be rather bold of an agent (assuming that's where it came from) to just make something up entirely.
But it is surprising he wouldn't have taken that, to me anyway. He marches to the beat of his own drum, though, and obviously wanted to stay in Toronto. He also had a great comment the other day to the effect of, "hey, I get paid a lot of money to play baseball, hard to complain."
