In fairness, they would've dealt Arenado to Houston if he hadn't pulled the veto card.

How about a favorite Ohtani memory? Had to be the plane ride, right?
Mark P
10:13
Kind of a random one, but it was Ohtani's second homer of the 2021 season.  The single best-sounding "crack of the bat" I've ever heard in all my years of watching baseball
No, it's Iowa
10:13
Can you see Burnes returning to Baltimore in anyway?
Mark P
10:14
Until he signs on the dotted line elsewhere, a reunion can't be ruled out.  I'd say it seems unlikely at this point given the relative lack of info we've heard linking Burnes to the Orioles, but it could be that Elias is keeping things close to the vest

It really feels like Phillies did really well in Luzardo trade. Good pitching beats good hitting
Mark P
10:15
Luzardo certainly has risk attached, but I agree that it was a worthwhile gambit for the Phillies to make.  If Luzardo is healthy, he has plenty of upside, and he might well thrive with a change of scenery

why didn’t Seattle get Naylor?
Mark P
10:19
Seattle's Comp Round pick is in the CBR-round A, currently 32nd overall.  The pick the Diamondbacks dealt away was 72nd overall, and since the D'Backs are also getting a bonus pick back via Walker signing elsewhere, they were perhaps more willing to part with their CBR-B selection for one year of Naylor.

Can you see the Reds in on Tesocar Hernandez?
Mark P
10:20
My guess is that he's out of Cincy's price range, given the limited budget the Reds are reportedly working with
Harley

Would Casas and some other pieces for Vlad Jr. make sense for both teams ?

10:21
Are you surprised that Hernandez and Santander are still unsigned?  What percent chance do you think the Reds have of signing one of them?
Mark P
10:22
Same goes for Santander, as he's probably also too rich for what the Reds have available to spend.

I'm not super surprised that both guys are still unsigned, and also it's only Dec. 22, so it's not like the season is right around the corner.

The Pirates spent 25 million dollars last offseason. Why not spend 20 million on Tascar Hernedez and
Mark P
10:25
Obviously Hernandez might prefer to play for a team with a better chance of contending in 2025, money notwithstanding.  I do think it is valid for the Pirates to spend their money on more of a sure thing offensively, rather than spread their money around like they did last year and getting only moderate returns

Will the Phillies end up giving Bryce Harper his extension and an extra $50 million or however much, or stick with “No deal”? If the latter, could this begin to fester in the clubhouse?
Mark P
10:28
Harper is signed through 2031 already, so the pursuit of an extension didn't make much sense to me.  If Harper is now upset that his AAV is relatively lower than several other players now, well, that can't come as a surprise to him given the nature of his long-term contract.  The whole point was that Harper was willing to sacrifice AAV in exchange for a very long deal, and so the Phils had a bit more payroll flexibility to pursue other talent.

Who is the one player on the Os that you would give a massive extension to?
Mark P
10:32
Henderson is my choice, if I can only extend one

Any chance Dave Dombrowski has the gravitas to get Perry Minasian to send Trout to his home town Phillies?..woudn't that be the best story of the off season?
Mark P
10:34
As fascinating as such a trade would be, I find it hard to think the Angels would do it, the Phillies (perhaps scared by Trout's injury history) would have much interest, or what an acceptable trade package would look like for either team

How do teams calculate the ROI for big contracts like Soto or Fried?  Aside from filling holes in the roster, are there calculations involving the increased attendance, jersey sales, etc.?
Mark P
10:36
No doubt about it.  Plus there's also the "flags fly forever" types of factors that so beyond just simple dollars and numbers.  Like, if Soto helps the Mets win one World Series during his tenure, that alone will be worth it in the eyes of many long-suffering Mets fans.

This doesn't even factor in a special case like Ohtani, whose deal may have already close to paid for itself in terms of additional sponsorship deals and fan interest overseas

Have we seen the last of Verlander, Kershaw, and Scherzer?
Mark P
10:36
Nope.  All three will pitch in 2025, barring injury.

GREAT trade today!  He's been Nate and Nathaniel, now he's a Nat.

If the rays and jays merged, could they win the AL East?
Mark P
10:39
I feel like someone asked this question in a chat long ago, which led me to make a very timely Ray Jay Johnson reference.

Anyway, sure, the Toronpa Bay RayJays have a very good combined team on paper

I’ve seen rumors of Cease being moved, but would the Padres consider moving Michael King who’s also set to hit free agency next offseason?
Mark P
10:41
Cease is represented by Scott Boras and King is represented by Excel.  So there's probably a better chance King would be open to signing an extension, which is why Cease is seen as the more plausible trade candidate

Feels like Mets are courting and have Vientos play 3B or 1B.
Mark P
10:43
The Mets have flexibility on this front with Bregman/Alonso since Vientos can play either corner infield spot.
Which is helpful for their purposes, plus Baty is also still in the picture for now
Phillies outfield make it make sense

Why would the Phillies bring in another lefty bat in Kepler who essentially brings the same skill set as Marsh? Whose playing against lefties ?
