I was already surprised they let him throw multiple innings.

I Know we aren't suppose to get to excited over Spring Training numbers but do the Reds actually have some good young options internally to fill a few rotation spots ala Garrett, Romano & Davis or just expect more of the same mediocrity from their farm system?
Jeffrey Todd
2:51
Don't get too excited over Spring Training numbers.

Eaton has been batting 6th for the Nats in ST. Is that where he stays during the season???
Jeffrey Todd
2:52
For me, after prioritizing more PAs for your best hitters, the next most important thing is varying L/R to avoid late-inning matchup problems. So, sure, don't see why that'd be an issue.

So, shouldn't a baseball stadium be able to last longer than 19 years, as in Chase Field? What's the underlying story here - team vs. controlling board? Would winning help or hurt the cause?
Jeffrey Todd
2:54
It should. It's ridiculous to tear down a stadium and build a new one in that span, let alone on taxpayers' dime.
Mets
2:54
Should the Mets just go out and get Kelly Johnson now?
Jeffrey Todd
2:54
Not real sure how he fits on the roster, even without Wright.
Roger
2:55
Better question. Wouldn't Norris be an upgrade for the Braves over Suzuki plus a possible catcher of the near future if he can rebound in the hitting dept? I can see they wouldn't want to pay 4.2M but the price has to be going down by now. With their young pitchers, it seems like two great framers would be ideal.
Jeffrey Todd
2:55
I'd guess they already have pretty well committed to their situation.
@BryanHoch
Didi Gregorius has a strain, no baseball activity for two weeks, will not be ready for Opening Day.
2:56
So that's not great.

Evans and Bochy seem reluctant to give Cain the number 5 spot in the rotation because he's been awful this spring. do you think Blach will be the 5 starter and they go with a different young lefty in the pen?
Jeffrey Todd
2:56
I still think they'll let Cain rise or fall in the regular season. But maybe if there's enough of a health issue, they delay him and take another course.

Are position players really more valuable than starting pitchers? I get how they can be in a fantasy setting, but in real baseball is having mike trout really any better than having Kershaw? Kershaw has more dominance over other pitchers than trout does over other hitters
Jeffrey Todd
2:58
Nothing is absolute, but generally, position players are less of a health risk. That alone would make me prefer a given position player to his pitching analogue -- in a context-neutral vacuum.

What team has the worst long term outlook?

I worry about the Marlins.

do machado and jones wbc performances give some hope for the orioles this year? they have both been fantastic both hitting and fielding
Jeffrey Todd

They were already relying on those guys being fantastic.

Will archer get more than sale
Jeffrey Todd
3:02
I don't expect he'll be moved this spring, so that is highly dependent upon the first half of his season (assuming he's marketed then). There's more upside in his contract.
Cookie Monster

Pagan is doing well in the WBC is this helping his FA stock?
Jeffrey Todd
3:04
I do think the WBC can serve as a showcase to an extent, b/c in many cases these guys are competing against top-level competition and showing their current athletic levels, stuff, etc. But I don't know that it's tied so much to the results as a scouting look. And in his case, his 2016 season is still more important. Bigger impact for minor league free agent types who can say "look! I threw 4 solid innings and my stuff looked good!"
3:05
Couple more and I gotta run ...
Matt E
3:05
If they were free agents now, who would get the biggest contract: Sale, Bumgarner, or Archer?
Jeffrey Todd
3:05
TO the poll!
3:06
Bigger FA contract right now

Archer (5.3% | 7 votes)

Sale (33.6% | 44 votes)

MadBum (61.1% | 80 votes)

Total Votes: 131

Looking at Arenado's and Machado's stats.... how did Machado have a better WAR? They were so similar, except Arenado had better everything... I'm confused
Jeffrey Todd
3:08
Because Arenado's park-adjusted hitting isn't that great.
Troy

Do the Braves sign a big FA in 2018? If so who? I see the pitching being good enough at the start of next year, but we need one more stud bat...
