What's the percentage chance that Gleyber Torres is the opening day 3rd basemen?
Jeffrey Todd
2:33
I'd be surprised. But he could certainly play his way onto the roster pretty early in the season.

2:33
Is Christian Arroyo a good enough headliner for Stanton?
Jeffrey Todd
2:34
Depends upon the money. I never got the sense that the broader baseball world was as high on him as the Giants, though, and he struggled and then got hurt. I'd expect the Marlins would hope for more and surely wouldn't just jump at a chance to get him.

With Jose Oquendo back, the cardinals are destined for a championship right?
Jeffrey Todd
2:34
Yeah that oughta do it.
2:35
I actually am really interested to see where things end up with STL. There is some serious talent in that pitching staff and they have some chips to utilize. Not hard to imagine the Cards having a big season in '18 depending upon how they play their ... well, their cards ... this winter.

Are we really going to contend in 2018? Or are we waiting for the dawn of the Bo/Vlad era to begin in Toronto?
Jeffrey Todd
2:36
Too much invested in veterans to just coast until those kids are ready. If they were going to do that, they'd be shopping Donaldson, no?
That said, they may continue to be protective of their future balance sheets. They are in pretty good order right now.
I thought getting Estrada back at that rate was a really nice win for TOR.

Is it better for the phillies to spend a lot in free agency this year or next year?
Jeffrey Todd
2:37
No reason to commit either way. Follow the value and be opportunistic.
I was the MLBTR staffer pushing for the Phils to be our Tanaka pick, btw. (That was pre-opt-in, of course.) I think they can and should take some risks.

Who are the untouchables for the Marlins right now?
Jeffrey Todd
2:38
N/A
Closest thing would perhaps be Realmuto.
Young, good everyday catcher is just not something you come across very often.
Chris
2:38
What could the Braves get in return for 1B Matt Adams?
Jeffrey Todd
2:40
The number of quality left-handed 1B/DH bats is pretty staggering. The Nats didn't think it was worth giving 5 mil to Adam Lind, who is a better hitter. Adams is a pure platoon guy that can't reasonably play the OF. Just not a lot of value there.
(Lind is much older, but still.)
2:41
Maybe they could use Adams in a deal for a similarly mis-fit MLBer that works better. My initial thought is reliever. Otherwise it might be the old lower-level lotto ticket.

2:42
What type of trade value does Michael A Taylor have? Could the Nats move him in a similar way to the Cubs' Soler-Davis trade?
Jeffrey Todd
2:43
I think teams will understandably be wary of him, though it certainly helps that he's a high-floor guy with the glove and wheels. But it wouldn't really be quite the Soler scenario, since he was coming off of a rough year but perhaps was seen as the more likely to succeed talent than Taylor has been.
2:44
Anyway, what are the Nats looking for in this scenario? They don't need a closer or a starter. Really, they'd be opening an OF hole. That's why I sort of posited this as a way to account for them landing Stanton in that recent post (or doing something similarly massive and surprising).
2:45
Odds of that all going down are pretty small, I'd think. In part b/c I don't think the Nats really want Adam Eaton in CF.
Oh man I have only gone through 2 minutes of your questions.
Going to try some more rapid fire style here.

Do the Mariners sign a big arm this off season?
Jeffrey Todd
2:46
I think no.
Luhnow
2:46
What kind of impact reliever(s) can I trade for this winter without having to give up Tucker of Fisher? I don't know if I trust Britton's health...
Jeffrey Todd
2:46
They have other pieces they could move instead, but teams with the best young closers will have big asking prices.
Tony
2:46
Do you believe that signing Darvish would increase the odds of a team getting Otani?
Jeffrey Todd
2:46
No real reason to think that.
Andrew
2:46
Who do you think is more likely to sustain their production next year in St. Louis, Gyrko or DeJong?
Jeffrey Todd
2:47
Well, Gyorko is more likely to continue being a sl above average hitter since he has more of a track record and wasn't as stunningly useful as was DeJong.
2:48
They have no choice but to roll DeJong back out there, though, really.  Maybe that's cause to hold onto Aledmys? Or maybe if there's a lot of maneuvering they end up with a guy that can also play SS? So many possibilities, but odds are he's the dude, for better or worse.

2:48
What are the chances that Ian Kinser get traded to the Dodgers?
Jeffrey Todd
2:48
Only if they trade Forsythe, which would be kind of an odds scenario. But I guess if they really wanted to, they could do that. (Assuming Kinsler's NTC isn't a problem.)
Stanton
2:49
So you don't think the Angels have a shot at getting me?
