Decent chance of it, yeah, but they don't have to and he's a useful guy so you'd hate to just dump him.

Hey Jeff! Happy Holidays! It was awesome to see Tim come from behind the desk and run the machine for a full 8 hour shift! Cubs Question~ Heyward, a bag full of $54MM in cash(lowering his AAV to $14MM), and a minor lg prospect? Would some tanking team like the White Sox, Tigers, etc., take that deal so we can get him off the books?
Jeffrey Todd
3:20
You too. Yes, for those that didn't realize Tim Dierkes took the helm of the mothership yesterday. Like riding a bike!
3:21
On Heyward...hard for me to see a salary dump. Can Cubs afford to sell away a legitimate prospect given their farm-depleting moves? (Not really.) And how much value will another org really ascribe to Heyward's rights? (Not much.)
Think they need to wait and hope he can improve.

Any update with reference to filling their outfield needs?

What am I gonna have to give up to sign JD Martinez?
Jeffrey Todd
3:23
Have to move Greinke $.
3:24
Even then ... is it sensible to do that (likely having to pay down part of contract or give up talent) and then sign another expensive FA?

The worst team in baseball in 2020 will be...
Jeffrey Todd
3:25
Whoops I thought this asked 2018.
I have no way of guessing 2020, except that the answer should probably always be the Marlins, ha.
3:26
Let's do a poll on '18

Would the Red Sox ever be in on Yelich?
Jeffrey Todd
3:29
Doesn't make a ton of sense to me. Slightly older/more expensive/more accomplished version of Benintendi.

Will the Braves get a 3rd baseman before the season starts or wait to go all in on Donaldson or Machado?
Jeffrey Todd
3:31
Doesn't seem like an A/B scenario to me. They could do both or neither.

Rendon 7 Years 150 million?
Jeffrey Todd
3:33
That's not wild after the quality of his 2017 season, but I think they'd want a bigger discount given the injury history and less-than-excellent output in prior two seasons. Maybe Seager contract with a boost.
3:34
Seager was at 100 mil as a first-year arb eligible. Rendon is a year closer to FA. FWIW

if yanks go davirsh do they just play andjuar at 3rd to stay under cap?
Jeffrey Todd
3:35
Could see them relying on an unproven young guy at one IF position, I guess, but let's not forget there are also a variety of potentially cheap veterans left in FA. Could end up with some nice value possibilities if they wait it out.

Would it be wise for the Reds to sign a John Lackey or RA Dickey completely for innings and helping the younger starters?
Jeffrey Todd
3:37
Dickey would make sense. I'm chuckling at the idea of the over-competitive Lackey being massively grumpy while playing for the Reds.
I mean, I get your point, not trying to mock the idea. Just that he's so dang cranky as it is. How will he feel if the club stinks?

Better to trade Fulmer now or hope he shows good things and trade him at the deadline?
Jeffrey Todd
3:38
Shouldn't trade him now unless there's a truly fair/compelling offer.

With how much relievers are getting paid now do you see this as a continuing trend or a market correction coming?
Jeffrey Todd
3:40
By and large the reliever spending has been within established expectations, but with a premium going to the better guys -- perhaps reflecting the fact that teams feel less  compelled to pay up for marginal starters. In other  words, a bit of a budget shift from rotation to pen.

Do "all signs point to yes" on the rebuild, or am I simply hoping to find a Hoz in my stocking?
Jeffrey Todd
3:41
Need to rebuild either way. Frankly I just have a hard time understanding the concept of the Royals spending nine figures for Hosmer at this point.

Should the cubs be spending money on Darvish when the possibility of Harper next year is there or the fact that we need to sign our own young players?
Jeffrey Todd
3:43
Harper shouldn't factor in. That's purely speculative and most people pushing the connection are focused on the fact that he and Bryant are pals. But how long will KB be  around? And when's the last time you heard of a friendship driving a top-tier FA signing?
Cubs  are also still just going to be hamstrung by the Heyward contract.
3:44
As for the immediate consideration, Darvish could fill an immediate and future need. They obviously won't want to pay full potential going rate there, and will need to balance future considerations (including possible extensions), but it'sa pretty sensible fit all things considered.
