After Verlander's comments about Astros being the team to beat, take a stab at who has the better year overall, Verlander or Severino?
Jeffrey Todd
3:10
Not sure what one thing has to do with the other. Or why anyone would feel salty about JV saying the defending WS champs are the team to beat. "Yeah we had a nice run last year and are loaded with talent, but I agree, the Yankees are probably better than us."
Anyhow my general expectation is that both of those pitchers will not be quite as good as they were last year.

3:11
What will the extension look like for Didi Gregorius? It has to happen, right? No one deserves it more.
Jim
3:15
Does Carlos Gomez make enough sense in Pittsburgh for 2 years and 16ish million dollars? Pirates don't really have a backup CF and LF at PNC is kind of like playing center anyway.
Jeffrey Todd
3:15
Yankees don't have to lock into a guy like Didi, no. That's not to say they wouldn't have interest, but I don't think he's going to get a deal b/c he deserves it in some sense. This isn't just about the young talent rising, though that's part of it, as is the possibility of getting a different player in the near term. NYY just doesn't need to be desperate to save money through extensions. They can wait and see if they really believe he's the right guy when the time comes.
Sorry ... guess I forgot to hit send on that Didi answer.
3:16
As for Gomez and the Pirates .... I'm just having a hard time imagining that kind of outlay on that player after they dealt Cutch and Cole.

3:16
Cargo on a year deal if we miss out on JDM?
Jeffrey Todd
3:16
Nah they can't just be rolling the dice on a guy who has struggled of late. They have to keep up with a really good Yankees team.

3:17
The comments are just a side note to spark the question, don't see the saltiness... you could still answer Sev vs. Verlander.
Jeffrey Todd
3:18
I sort of did answer it. JV was an ace in the second half and Severino was reeeally good. But JV is old and Severino probably isn't quite that good, so I expect both to take a step back. Which is better? Eh, not sure it really is worth trying to answer that in this format --- would involve quite a lot of research and thought.
Yankee Fans - UGH!
3:18
Come on Jeff you know better than to rag on the Evil Empire.  They are the only team that is allowed to be the favorite win the WS every year!
Jeffrey Todd
3:18
I'm not trying to go after the Yankees or their fans, to be clear. They have a really exciting roster.

Is there an MLBTR style guide?  "Years of age" is pretty wordy and stiff.
Jeffrey Todd
3:19
As in, "18 years of age"? That's a stylistic problem?
Dude.
3:20
We write the age of a player in just about every post we publish, so ... have to mix it up and there are limited options.
Hypothetically
3:20
Who is Kenley Jansen's backup?
Jeffrey Todd
3:20
Mid-season trade acquisition.
Neil Walker

Why is no one touching me?
Jeffrey Todd
3:21
He's in the same general realm of market expectations as is Cashner, who is evidently signing for right around what we guessed. Still no reason to panic.
Billington

7/$210 for Didi
Jeffrey Todd
3:22
Realize this isn't serious, but ... I'd guess Segura is the best comp. Was also a younger guy in 4+ service class.
Timmy
3:23
Why has MLBTR not posted about the Nick Franklin signing?
Jeffrey Todd
3:24
Not sure, as I haven't been on the site today, but that'd depend upon the source suggesting there's some kind of deal. But I will be sure to check.

It defies credulity on the owners part in my mind when they claim to be "trying to win" with so much viable talent -- and viable WAR numbers -- sitting around as free agents still.
Jeffrey Todd
3:25
So long as the players are still out there and the season hasn't started, it's still possible it's just still a negotiating stance.

If, and I know it's a big if, the Mets pitching is healthy can they challenge the Nats for the division?
Jeffrey Todd
3:26
I'd think the Mets upside and Nats downside scenarios overlap, if that makes sense. So, sure, I think there are scenarios where the Mets challenge. But the Nats can still use some chips at the trade deadline if needed and they are the clear favorites at this point. (Plus may still improve over the coming weeks.)

I'm not done right?
Jeffrey Todd
3:27
Not sure I understand holding onto Herrera to open the season, but maybe interest is low enough that they are looking at the deadline? Otherwise, see what happens with Hosmer and keep an eye out for interesting bargains, I guess.
Verlander
3:28
I am not "old"
Jeffrey Todd
3:28
You're my age. I'm qualified to label you old.

3:28
Verlander was rebutting the comment from Russo about the road to the AL going through NY.  He wasn't baiting or trashing the Yankees and it wasn't directed at the Yankees.  Why would the Yankess take offense?  He said nothing one way or the other about NY.  There are a lot of AL teams why do the Yankees feel it is all about them?
Jeffrey Todd
3:29
Yeah, he was just responding ... and also this whole thing is obviously silly. I mean, look who started the discussion.
Scott Boras
3:29
Is there a sleeper team for JDM?
Jeffrey Todd
3:30
That's the interesting question, b/c you just have to figure the DBacks can only go so high. I just don't know who it would be.

This obviously isn't a real MLBTR Chat because there hasn't been anyone trying to pawn off Ellsbury to every team yet
Jeffrey Todd

Ells to Tigers. Read it here first.
