How poorly would Heyward have to perform before they finally turn him into more of a defensive replacement?
Jeffrey Todd
3:53
I'd guess he has mostly lost any presumption of playing time at this point. That is to say, if he just isn't getting it done, he'll be on the bench.
3:54
I still think he'll be a part of a rotation, at the very least, but the window is now. There are competitors in the division. Can't afford to trot him out there everyday if he's not hitting at all.

Jays have athletic MLB OFs like Hernandez & Alford but Steve Pearce is blocking then cuz of his $7 mill contract. What Is the a trade market for Pearce ?
Jeffrey Todd
3:56
I'd say he's blocking them b/c he's surely a better hitter than they are. If that assessment changes as the season goes on, and the youth/athleticism becomes more compelling, then I don't think the contract will be an impediment.
Kyle
3:56
What is disturbing about the new ball park plans?
Jeffrey Todd
3:57
Don't get me started, but for starters: moving  out of downtown (Braves), tearing down perfectly good, recently built buildings, public financing. It's immensely wasteful.
Tommy Joseph
3:57
Should I have taken an offer in Japan or Korea?
Jeffrey Todd
3:57
Can still do that later. Keep chasing the dream here if that's what feels right.
G-boys
3:58
Actually Sam Dyson got raked again in his last outing after striking out the side the one before.
Jeffrey Todd
3:58
Oh. Well, I still haven't seen any indication they are thinking about dropping him. We suggested it seemed possible at times earlier in the winter but they have seemed sold on him.
ATL rotation
3:59
Which ATL pitcher is most likely to be traded before the 2019 season?
Jeffrey Todd
3:59
McCarthy is a pretty likely mid-season trade candidate if healthy.
Justin Turner
4:01
Why is this guy always hurt!?!?
Jeffrey Todd
4:01
He got hit by a pitch.
Carlos Correa
4:02
Do I get locked up next?
Jeffrey Todd
4:03
I'll guess not. Obviously the team would surely love to do so at the right price. But will Correa sign for anything that Houston would do? And how far will they stretch after the 'Tuve deal?
Not Jeff Sullivan
4:03
If you're a cubs fan, are you satisfied with the current bullpen situation? If not, any possibility in trading for David Robertson this season? I guess the yanks would need to eat between a quarter to half the contract.
Jeffrey Todd
4:04
I think Tim addressed that pretty well in his review post today. There's a reasonably compelling argument that, hey, coulda/shoulda made one more pen addition.
4:05
As for Robertson, I don't see why the Yanks would need to eat money at all. He was outstanding last year and looks easily to be worth the rest of the contract.
Joe
4:06
If Altuve is worth 5 years$131 million it's scarey to think what Harper's worth. 10years 300
Jeffrey Todd
4:08
Not really comparable. Altuve already had two cheap seasons locked in ('18-'19). (Also it was 151, not 131.) Harper has waaaay more leverage because he's just one year away and is younger. Otherwise, in terms of on-field value, it's arguably a toss-up. Harper has had a bigger season than Altuve ever has, but Tuve has been more consistent.
4:09
Point there is mostly to say that a fair bit of Harper's value is tied up in his youth. And that a big factor in Altuve signing for the amount he did is that he was two full seasons away from FA (and has been pretty underpaid to date for his quality of play).
Astros
4:10
McHugh and Fisher for Realmuto?
Jeffrey Todd
4:10
I think they'd want more volume of young talent to go with Fisher, if he's even enough as a headliner. Obviously I'm sure they'd love to have McHugh to some extent, but I also don't think the Marlins are going to give any real value for him.
4:11
Guess I'd phrase that slightly differently: they wouldn't ascribe much value to him in this trade scenario, esp since they'd be taking on some salary over and above JTR's salary.
Brent
4:12
Why does Fred McGriff get no HOF love?  He was a beast and deserves to be in but never gets close
Jeffrey Todd
4:12
Yeah I'm on the Crime Dog train.
Brendon
4:12
Is Jayson Werth's career over?
Jeffrey Todd
4:13
He just told Rosenthal today he doesn't want it to be. But it's not really clear where there'd be a fit at this point.
Gus
4:15
You've suggested twice the Yanks won't have much payroll flexibility at mid-season.  Don't they have like $20m to work with?  Plus if need be they have expensive parts they could send in a trade (not that they likely would have to do that).
Jeffrey Todd
4:16
Think it's less than that. There is some flexibility, yeah. Moving expensive guys might be possible in theory, but that means sending out more young talent. Point is the Sox and Astros seem to have more freedom in this regard. Everything the Yankees do will be somewhat constrained.
John
4:16
Why are the Rays so reluctant to trade Chris Archer? They’re not going to contend this year or probably next. Would Trea Turner and Victor Robles from the Nats be enough for him?
Jeffrey Todd
4:17
That'd definitely be enough but the Nats aren't going to give up two controllable regulars with that kind of upside.
Then again, maybe the Rays don't like Turner all that much since they passed on keeping him once already.
4:18
Generally, it's understandable they aren't going to trade Archer for less than a haul. They aren't just cashing in on veterans. And their model with pitchers has been to deal them a year or two away from FA.
Brent
4:18
Why is everyone writing off Miguel Cabrera?  He has one bad year that was injury plagued and suddenly he's finished?
Jeffrey Todd
4:19
I don't think anyone would be surprised if he's able to return to being a pretty darn productive hitter for a decent while longer. But he's almost 35 and really struggled last year.
Athleticos
4:20
So mlb.com released an article calling the A's the 10th best lineup in baseball. With some luck in starting pitching do you see them shocking the naysayers?
Jeffrey Todd
4:20
That lineup grade sounds optimistic. As for the pitching, the luck so far has been ... not lucky. We shall see but they need to hit on a lot of coin flips.
