Odubel Herrera and Jorge Alfaro isnt in the opening day lineup. Why should I not be outraged
Jeffrey Todd
3:51
They are going to do a lot of mixing and matching. It's the model they are pursuing. I would expect true everyday guys to be the exception rather than the rule in Philly.

Why aren't arbitration contracts fully guaranteed? It seems unfair
Jeffrey Todd
3:52
Some are - the player can negotiate for that and (generally) receive less money. They are also protected in cases of injury, as we learned in the Zach Britton instance.
3:53
All of this stuff is a balancing act. It is a bit unfair, but if he players want it changed, they have to negotiate for it. Worst case for guys cut in spring is they get a decent chunk of salary and still get to sign as free agents, though obviously their markets aren't typically great at that point.

Is Strickland now the closer in SF?
Jeffrey Todd
3:54
Would be my guess, but they could use Dyson since he has experience in that role and all that jazz.
Maybe it won't be long.
Then again ...
@KO_Crowley
now
Melancon said the plan is to see the same specialist Dr. Shin who performed his surgery in September. He said the pronator and flexor run close together.

“Every outing was painful.”

Best mascot in baseball?  Looks and/or actions
Jeffrey Todd
3:55
I'm all about kitsch with mascots. They should be pure goofiness and fun. So, clearly, it's either the SD Chicken or the Phanatic.
Among active mascots, at least.

better fantasy option:  Eugenio Suarez or Jeimer Candelario?
Jeffrey Todd
3:56
Hey now this isn't a fantasy chat.
But Suarez, easily. Established bat, way better lineup and park.
That’s it, Fort Pitt
3:56
My Pirates have 40 man openings. Anyone worth paying attention to on waivers? Anyone worth claiming?
Jeffrey Todd
3:57
Not in terms of MLB assets. Thing is, the Bucs have lots of options for depth. Maybe they can look for prospect upside with those open spots?
Sam

Padres over/under 75 game?
Jeffrey Todd
3:58
That's a reasonable place to put the over/under.

Will the Melancon contract go down as the worst big-money closer deal of all time when it’s all said and done?
Jeffrey Todd
3:59
It is on pace to be, yeah.
Doesn't necessarily mean it was terribly conceived from the outset, though there were certainly some reasons to be skeptical.

Thoughts on Joey Lucchesi starting tomorrow night?
Jeffrey Todd

Well I like when teams have the courage of their convictions.

How many games are you watching right now?
Jeffrey Todd
4:02
None, because I'm worried about overloading my computer and having it crash in the middle of the chat.
THANKS A LOT EVERYONE

mlbtraderumors.com says that Strickland and Dyson will share closing duties, while rosterresource.com has Strickland as the closer.  Any idea which is more accurate?
Jeffrey Todd
4:03
Well we are all part of the same fam. I haven't looked closely at the matter, but from what I see on the site, that was just Steve suggesting what makes sense from the outside. As for RR, that'd be Jason's best assessment as of the moment. I think it's still up in the air.

Any information on Lackey?  I know he is 39, and coming off a below average season, but I am shocked nobody would take a chance on him.
Jeffrey Todd
4:04
Guess I'm not stunned he did not get a MLB deal. Surprised, though. We also don't know what he was asking for - maybe even a 40-man spot wasn't enough? Might have wanted a decent guarantee. Etc.

When do they become relevant?
Jeffrey Todd
4:05
As soon as '19
But you have to wait and see how the development goes.
Like, the rotation could look very promising or pretty concerning. We just don't know yet.

Is my job on the line?
Jeffrey Todd

Not sure it's postseason or bust, but he could be at risk if the M's just have a disastrous season.
