Time to move on from Greg Byrd,  can he be packaged?
Jeffrey Todd
3:53
Seems rather premature to me.
3:54
I mean, if there's a golden opportunity to get better and it means sending him elsewhere, then that could be plausible, sure. But he's hitting at league average, and if the Yankees believe in him as they have always said, no reason to lose faith now in particular.

In the chat yesterday that Vlad Jr is the best 19 year old out there so my wondering is who is the better younger player  Acuna Jr Soto Vlad Jr or Bo Bichette?
Jeffrey Todd
3:56
No idea but I generally would put my money on the guy doing it the earliest at the highest level. In this case, that's Soto. I do love his demeanor, too, certainly does't seem overwhelmed.

In what world is it wise for SD to trade for Machado?
Jeffrey Todd
3:56
Ha. I don't get that scenario. I have been racking my brain trying to imagine how it works and can't really come up with anything other than pretty wild ideas.

Could the Padres expect a similar return for Yates or stammen to that of Herrera?
Jeffrey Todd
3:58
Yates > Herrera > Stammen, generally, in terms of trade value.

What would a return be for Boyd from the Mariners?
Jeffrey Todd
3:59
See this is why it doesn't make a ton of sense. What would the Tigers be asking other teams for other than controllable young players at or near the majors? That organization probably is hoping not to undergo a  looooooong rebuild. They have lots of upper-level arms, true, but Boyd is still a very useful guy for them. How do you offer enough to make it worth giving him up? It's just a bit hard for me to get my head around this. Heck, the Tigers are still in the race, too.
4:00
(I don't expect the Tigers to remain in the race.)

Would the Angels include Jo Adell in a trade for R. Iglesias?

Not sure why most people think the Padres are definitely selling but not so much about the Twins. Currently SD is in a much better position than MIN in the wild card race isn't it?
Jeffrey Todd
4:03
Twins have reason to expect more from their players. And Padres aren't in good WC position ... there are loads of better teams between them and a playoff spot.
James Franco

5 years of Devers is a huge overpay for 2 months of Machado, right?
Jeffrey Todd
4:03
Yes.

What would the Brewers need to get Martin from the Blue Jays?
Jeffrey Todd
4:04
I know Martin is a respected guy behind the dish, but it shouldn't take prospect assets when he's owed $20 mil this year and nextand isn't hitting.

Am I alone in thinking the Royals' rebuild is looking like a 15-year job?  The product on the field and the decision making by the FO are leaving me hopeless.
Jeffrey Todd
4:06
Did you read Sam Mellinger's column today? It is .... interesting. He says they could hold onto Salvy in part on the idea they could be back to contending by 2020. That seems awfully optimistic.

SURELY the Reds will cash in one at least one of their trade chips for a bonafied SP, right??
Jeffrey Todd
4:08
Not sure which of their assets would do that, unless you are moving Suarez or Barnhart and view a "bonafied SP" as a quality, upper-minors prospect.
Contenders can't really improve by trading away high-performing young players off of their MLB rosters.
4:09
Iglesias has appeal but isn't going to bring back an equivalent age/control quality starter. Gennett isn't near that valuable. Etc.

Do you think the White Sox, their potentially awesome young talent and WIDE OPEN budget have a realistic chance to lure a Machado or harper or have they not shown enough this season to tempt an all star to sign and be patient for a year or two?
Jeffrey Todd
4:10
Will they be beating the market by a wide margin on price and also committing to bring in lots of other veteran talent? Then, perhaps. But they have loads of holes still. It's tough to see.
Going to take a few more and then I have to run...

With Michael Fulmer not dazzling as much this year as the past 2, could Matthew Boyd be available?
Jeffrey Todd
4:13
It is a bit remarkable to me how many Boyd questions I'm getting suddenly. I mean, I frankly don't understand the way Morosi approached that report. If you're going to talk about the guy that much and kick off speculation, shouldn't you mention that he has never been very good before and still has questionable peripherals this year? Boyd is getting by with a low BABIP and home run rate. As I said, sure, he looks to be a useful arm, but this is a great example of the kind of silliness that can occur this time of year.
Bo

Folty, Newcomb, Soroka, Teheran, Sanchez, Gohara, McCarthy... Who goes?
Jeffrey Todd
4:15
That's not really the question. It's more a matter of who is healthy and who is actually throwing well enough to hold a spot. Several of those guys are easily optionable or disposable or bullpennable if the situation warrants, so there's plenty of flexibility.

Saw an article regarding Whit Merrifield's trade value.  The author indicated that a conservative value could be (without using names, which he did) a lower-end top 100 guy, another team-specific top-10 or so (not top 100), and a lottery ticket type of prospect.  Is that a gross overpay for Merrifield's skillset, considering the cheap control he comes with?
Jeffrey Todd
4:17
I dont like trying to value guys on that kind of basis too much. It'd need to be a return that really did something for the Royals, since they control him for quite some time and he's a versatile player. So it's all the more difficult to say "one of these, one of those, and another of that kind" to describe his value.

It seems that there is no contending team that needs Scooter Gennett, is that right?
Jeffrey Todd
4:17
I'm sure there are teams that would like to have him. But I don't think there are any that really need to have him and would use him as an everyday guy.
That Girl
4:18
I think Scooter is very valuable to the Reds.  I disagree with what you said.  He may not be a Machado type guy, but he’s valuable as in the dugout, trying to be positive when they’re playing so poorly.
Jeffrey Todd
4:19
I didn't say he isn't valuable to the Reds, or to any other team. But he's a platoon second baseman, for the most part. I wrote a whole thing on this not too long ago if you want my full thoughts: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/05/trade-candidate-scooter-gennett...

Why do people think the Reds, Marlins, Orioles and Royals will contend before the Padres do?
