I didn't think Marte was a fit for the Jays since he's only under contract through 2021, but if they're now going to try and compete this season, maybe it could work out
Better contract?
11:45
Better contract going forward: Yelich 3/$41.5m after options, or Bregman 5/100?  More $$ for Bregman but 2 more years of control.
Mark P
11:45
I'd rather have Bregman for the extended period of time, he looks like a superstar

Will the Angels call me to come out of retirement

With the tribe signing Hernandez, I don’t see them trading Lindor this offseason. Thoughts?
Mark P
11:48
As I wrote earlier, the Indians are trying to both compete and save money in 2020.  There has never been any indication that they would deal Lindor (if at all) for only prospects, as Cleveland is looking at least one piece that can help them immediately.

What exactly would the red Sox lose if they don’t get below 208mm?  They have plenty of money... what’s the difference in draft picks and international pool money?
Mark P
11:50
They'd only lose internatonal money and a 10-slot drop in the draft if they surpassed the top luxury tax level of $248MM.  The Sox are currently at around $237MM, so they'd still face a hefty repeater fine for three straight years over the threshold, but nothing else.

And again, it'd be a "hefty fine" only if the Red Sox weren't another uber-wealthy franchise.  The hand-wringing over the luxury tax seems more than a bit overwrought

What would it take for Padres to acquire Clevinger?
Mark P
11:51
I'd guess Cleveland would insist on Gore or Patino as the headliner of a heavy prospect package.

Meet Christmas!! Thanks for spending the time to talk to us fans. Here’s my question: if the cubs have had rumors of trading Bryant or possibly moving basically anyone except Baez (in an effort to clear some cap), why have they been “in” on the likes of Castellanos, Keuchel (before he signed), etc. if they’re trying to save money?
Mark P
11:54
Most teams routinely "check in" on almost every big free agent, just to gauge their interest in playing for a club, getting a sense of their asking price, etc.

For instance, if the Cubs had discovered that Castellanos so loved his Wrigley experience that he was willing to take a significant discount, I'll bet they would've signed him and then unloaded another contract or two after the fact

What do I have to be happy about in 2020 MLB?
Mark P
11:56
The Rays are awesome.  Half the league will be competing in Grapefruit League action.  The Marlins....uh, are also a team!
Mike
11:57
I’m surprised Clint Frazier and Julio Urias haven’t been dangled publicly in trade rumors. Both would seem to have value and could use a change of scenery
Mark P
11:58
Teams usually don't publicly make players available, that only increases pressure on the club to make a deal and it can lead to hard feelings with the player if he isn't moved
Really?
11:58
You guys think the A’s would really trade Semien? With the positive progress toward a new stadium?
Mark P
11:58
It can't be ruled out, given the Athletics' history.

Also am I the only one a little uncomfortable calling him “Yoshi”?
Mark P
12:00
Tsutsugo?  He has actually asked to be called "Yoshi," so there doesn't seem to be an issue

How would u rate the Sox offseason so far? And what would u recommend to Hahn to finish the job?
Mark P
12:01
B+ so far, I'd say the Sox need another starting pitcher and one more solid bat in the lineup
Mookie Betts
12:03
Do I sign for 10 years, $350M on a contingent offer from White Sox to pick up my salary this year pending signing extension?
Mark P
12:04
Betts has often said that he wants to test the open market in free agency, so I don't think he's going to take any sort of extension now (unless we're talking $400MM or something epic) that he's so close

What about an Adam Frazier for Clint Frazier trade?
Mark P
12:04
I'm listening....
12:05
(Serious answer: the Yankees likely have a higher value on Clint than they do on Adam)

Who was the better player in their prime, Miguel Cabrera or Albert Pujols? And would you agree they're both top 10 players of all time?
Mark P
12:06
Not top-10 ever, but both are obviously all-time greats.  As to their primes....hmm....
Who was better in their prime?

Miguel Cabrera (30.2% | 127 votes)

Albert Pujols (69.8% | 294 votes)

How many people are on this chat on Christmas morning?

We're just shy of 1000 questions in this chat, even on a major holiday morning.  Thanks to all for participating!

Would Roger Dorn be a good plug in at 3b for my team
Mark P
12:09
Hot take: Roger Dorn is the funniest part of Major League.  Everything about that character is completely hilarious to me.

Wil Myers, $30M and a good prospect to Toronto for a low level prospect, Myers plays 1B. Who says no?
Mark P
12:10
Toronto, unless that "good prospect" is someone like Gore or Patino.

Do you think Omar Vizquel should be a HOFer?
Mark P
12:11
Frankly, no.  It's surprising to me that Vizquel has this much support on the ballot when there are some players (Rolen, Jones) who were also elite gloves and far far better hitters

It seems that in all of Washington's big signings, there is quite a bit of deferred money included. When is that money counted towards the luxury tax and isn't that going to take its toll on Washington's payroll in the future?
