We’ve been told Ryu, Donaldson, wheeler, bumgarner, Cole, and a slew of others have all said they don’t want to play in Minnesota. What are the odds thats ALL true, versus simply a front office/media excuse for not signing big names. Seems far fetched it’s a unanimously despised destination, no?
Mark P
9:42
I'd imagine it's true, since "nobody wants to play for us!" isn't exactly a great excuse to make up.

In the cases of Cole/NYY, Bumgarner/Arizona, Wheeler/Philly, geography played a big part in their decisions, and reports have said that Donaldson's preference would be to return to Atlanta.  In Ryu's case, seems like the Jays just were willing to make the higher bid.

Who does Theo get so much credit, he has never drafted or developed starting pitching at all. He drafts mostly hitters and overpays (on the back end) for veteran starting pitching. When he left Boston, they were terrible.
Mark P
9:43
Yeah, that Theo Epstein and his three World Series rings clearly doesn't know anything about putting a team together.  He left the Red Sox in such a mess that they didn't win the Series again until TWO whole seasons after he departed!
9:44
There are several legitimate criticisms one can direct towards Epstein and his team-building methods, but wondering why he is so highly-regarded shouldn't be hard to figure out

I’ve been asking this on several chats for a bit now: what kind of message does it send about an org, to players and to MLB, if said org commits long-term to a superstar franchise-face player like Arenado and then trades him one lousy year later?  Not a good look imho
Mark P
9:45
You're not wrong.  Especially when the Rockies created this mess for themselves with so many poor free agent contracts (Desmond, Davis, Shaw, McGee, etc.)

What is your favorite childhood memory playing baseball
Mark P
9:47
I was playing left field when the batter hit a fly ball that I thought was going way foul, as I kind of lost sight of it (rainy night).  I randomly raised my arms in the air to stretch....and caught the ball.  It was a complete one-in-a-million act.
9:48
A routine play on paper, but maybe the most remarkable catch in BASEBALL HISTORY
Pete Alonso
9:48
What kind of season do you see me having in 2020?
Mark P
9:48
Maybe some minor sophomore slump potential, but Alonso should continue to be a big hitter

Give me something to be happy about this season
Mark P

The Rays are going to be an excellent team

9:51
Does Luke Voit have first base locked down this season, or will he lose playing time?
Mark P
9:51
I'd guess the Yankees will give DJLM a fair amount of first base time, plus Ford, and maybe even Andujar
Not to say that the Yankees aren't still high on Voit, but he won't be their full-time, first-choice 1B
J.D. Martinez
9:52
With all theses trade rumors of Betts, Price & others should I have opted out & looked to sign with a contender?
Mark P
9:53
There weren't many places a mostly-DH player could sign this winter, and I'd imagine Martinez wouldn't have stayed in his contract if he thought he had an active market waiting for him
9:54
Plus, I don't think Boston will be a bad team next year.  A bit more health and a couple of bounce-back years, and they can be right back in contention
Kelly Grubers wing man
9:56
Mancini would look good as the Jays new 1B man would he not?
Mark P
9:57
Indeed he would, though it depends whether the O's would be willing to move him within the AL East and whether the Jays are willing to meet what is surely a big asking price

Baseball appears headed toward the "robo-ump" for balls and strikes. How soon could that happen in the majors?
Mark P
9:58
I fully expect the "robo-ump" to come to MLB within the next five seasons, at most

I’m the twins, I love Buxton, but he has never played 150+ games. Can we still trade him and maybe another prospect for Thor?
Mark P
10:00
I don't know about getting Thor, but I kind of agree that Buxton might be better served as a trade chip than as a long-term piece.  That said, I can understand Minnesota's desire to keep him, since Buxton has showed so much promise when healthy
At worst, the guy looks like an elite baserunner and CF defender, which isn't nothing

Why are so many players going over to japan and KBO? Is it a trend or are we just hearing more about it?
Mark P
10:02
More players have been increasingly open to playing in Japan/Korea, under the logic that they can play there for a season or two, bank some solid money, and not fall off the radar of MLB clubs (who are more heavily scouting overseas)

What do you see Gio Urshella getting in arbitration this offseason?

I just don’t understand how the Nationals could let Anthony Rendon go after winning the World Series. Especially a year after losing Bryce Harper. Your thoughts?
Mark P
10:05
The Nats did re-sign Strasburg, so it's not like they're just sitting back.  They made the decision that signing both would impede their future flexibility to make moves, especially since it took more than projected (at least by us) to land Strasburg.
10:06
All things being equal, I would've rather had Rendon than Strasburg.  But, Stras also seemed like the one who was more intent on staying in D.C.

What’s it like working for Mlbtr
Mark P
10:07
It's a lot of fun!  I just passed a full decade with MLBTR, and I'd be happy to still be here ten more years down the road!

10:08
Any rumors on when Houston will learn their fate?
Mark P
10:08
No word yet.  I'd guess MLB is taking their time in fully working out this punishment, as a matter of precedent

If Indians are in true teardown..then why not deal Bieber as well as clevinger and lindor?  Butji haven't heard of any rumours that they Are shopping him.
Mark P
10:09
That's the thing, Cleveland isn't in "true teardown."  They want to deal their higher-salaried guys (Bauer, Kluber, maybe Lindor) who aren't under a long-term contract, but they're still hoping to contend in 2020
