The Airport
10:20
Love it! You the man M!
Mark P
10:21
Clarification: Toronto's airport is called Pearson Airport, making it a logical nickname for the Jays' pitching prospect.

If you don't think Jays fans will start wearing jerseys with Pearson's number and YYZ as the name, you're nuts
Jerry
10:22
Are the Dodgers crazy for keeping Stripling? They have a lot of young arms ahead of him. Aren't their teams that can use him?
Mark P
10:22
No such thing as too much pitching, as we've seen with the Dodgers themselves and their various rotation injuries over the years.
King Kelly
10:23
Is the opener here to stay?  And are you a fan?
Mark P
10:23
I like it, and believe it's proven to be a generally effective strategy.
Dodgers
10:24
Is it wrong that I hope Striping gets traded? Even as a Dodger fan, knowing he helps our team out of the pen, I feel for the guy. He deserves to be a full time starter somewhere. I feel so strongly about it that I want to see him dealt.
Mark P
10:24
Stripling seems like a guy who'd be a rotation stalwart on almost any other team, true
Bartolo’s Cologne
10:25
Would the Cards and Yanks be a logical trade partner considering the Yanks need for pitcher all the sudden?
Mark P
10:25
Given Mikolas' injury concerns, I don't think the Cards are lining up to trade any starters right now
Tommy johns #1 client
10:25
Given the number of significant pitching injuries sustained by Angels pitchers, isn’t it time the Halos look at their training and development staff and/or organizational approaches to pitchers? This has to be a system wide issue from the minors up the the majors, right? Too many pitchers going down to be coincidence
Mark P
10:26
I have to believe the Angels have done this already, maybe twice over given the nonstop parade of injuries.
The Airport
10:27
Is this a thing? Was traveling and outta the loop, but I love this.
Mark P
10:27
I'm not sure I'm the first to come up with it....but sure, I'll take credit.  Let's try to make "Airport" happen, with hopefully better luck than Gretchen's attempts with "fetch"
Red sox
10:28
Cant be a coincidence that dave d and alex cora are fired in the same off season red sox had to know what was coming
Mark P
10:29
Cora was definitely fired in response to the Astros scandal, but doubtful on Dombrowski.  According to some reports, Red Sox ownership wanted to fire him in the 2018-19 offseason but held off since, you know, they'd just won 108 games and the World Series.

5/120 with an option for year 6 plus a full no trade clause get it done for Realmuto?
Mark P
10:31
Make it a vesting option for year six and I think Realmuto's camp would have some real interest in such an offer.

Obligatory "hey, I wrote about a Realmuto extension recently!" link: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/02/extension-candidate-j-t-realmut...

Legend of Zelda or Super Mario bro’s?
Mark P
10:33
Mario all the way.

As wild as this sounds, I have never played a Zelda game in my life.  Did enjoy the cartoon, however.  "Excuuuuuuse ME, Princess!"
TroyMcClure
10:34
How much concern is there in Boston over Sale? Is there any indication they are checking in on trades?
Mark P
10:35
No rumors about any Sale trade, and I wonder how many teams would really be interested in a guy with those injury concerns and that much money committed to him.

Also, if you think Red Sox fans are mad about the Betts trade now, imagine if they turned around and dealt Sale a year after that extension
Over/Under
10:37
75 HR for Jorge Soler/Makiel Franco?
Mark P
10:38
I'd say the under.  I wouldn't be shocked if Franco is helped by a change of scenery or if Soler duplicates his 2019 numbers, but 75 homers is a lot.  Especially in a big ballpark that limits the long ball
Baseball Nostradamus
10:39
What cellar dweller from last season has the best chance to go worst-to-first? Baltimore, Detroit, Seattle? Padres, Pirates, or Marlins?
Mark P
10:39
Pittsburgh is the only one that is even kind of plausible
Jesus Luzardo
10:41
So the MLB beat writer said I now have 2 seam, 4 seam, change, curve, slider. An extra FB and breaking ball since last season. How scared should MLB lineups be of me? ST 5ip 5K 2H 0BBs.
Mark P
10:41
I think I've already used the phrase "the sky is the limit" once in this chat, but just cut and paste that one again for Luzardo.  Looks like the A's have a real gem
Ralphy
10:41
would anyone be willing to take Brandon Belt, or Crawford  and their entire contracts by the trade deadline this season?
Mark P
10:43
Belt maybe, though I feel we've been collectively waiting for him to go from good to great for years now, and in 2019 he was barely even good.

Crawford needs a huge bounceback to have any sort of trade value whatsoever.  Three straight mediocre years at the plate, and his defense has declined in 2018-19 as well
Nate
10:44
Are the Reds actually going to be good?  Or is this just a classic case of winning the offseason?
Mark P
10:45
I think they'll be helped by the fact that the NL Central as a whole had kind of a weird offseason, perhaps opening the door for the Reds to emerge
Mr T
10:46
How about Ernie Harwell as 1 of the 3 best announcers?
Mark P
10:48
Lots of people have been suggesting other announcers for my all-time top three, and to be fair, I haven't heard a lot of the old-time candidates like Harwell.

Scully and Uecker, besides being genuinely great announcers, also had the benefit of calling games during my prime baseball fandom when I had access to their broadcasts.
Oh, and i also forgot to mention Jim Brockmire
Roger Dorn
10:49
After the astros scandal, can we expect to see less teams in the future rebuilding their franchises the way they did? Or is completely tanking (without video technology and trash cans) here to stay?
Mark P
10:51
If an ownership group is willing to accept the 3-4 years of losing (and thus low attendance, TV ratings, etc.), I think you'll see more total rebuilds in the future.  The Astros' reputation probably won't sully the strategy itself....besides, the Cubs did the same thing, so maybe they'll become the model
HatsforBats
10:53
Should the Angels owner be held accountable if they face another playoff miss? Seems he is responsible for Stripling, a guy they need, not being in the rotation
Mark P
10:54
Not sure how Moreno could be "held accountable" in any real way.  Sure, fans wouldn't be pleased, but what is he going to do, fire himself?
Jake
10:55
Is criticism of Mike Fiers justified that he waited 2 years after leaving the Astros before blowing the whistle on the sign stealing tactics?
