Under normal circumstances, I could see the Yankees obviously wanting to keep him, while DJ might want to test the open market looking for a big multi-year score while he still can (he's 32 in July).  Harder to figure out the chances in the wake of the shutdown, though I could see the two sides working out a two-year deal or something.

I have 2 tickets for Camden yards this year. You want to go?
Mark P
8:03
I will politely decline
Commissioner's Office
8:04
So rosters the first month of the season may be bigger than the September rosters.
Mark P
8:05
I would guess MLB might just stick with expanded rosters of 29-30 players for the entire season, given the circumstances

Was 2016 run by the Cubs the most exciting run you can remember/have seen? I’ve been rewatching all the games while stay at home
Mark P
8:07
The 2016 World Series was about as Hollywood a storyline as possible.  The two teams with the longest championship droughts happen to be facing each other?  And it goes to extra innings in Game 7?

Should the Braves extend Mike soroka?
Mark P
8:10
I'd be shocked if they hadn't already floated the idea of an extension to Soroka's agents, just to see if they can get another early-career deal done (as with Acuna and Albies).  I'm sure Soroka would be open to the idea if the money is right, though it would take a lot of money on Atlanta's part

If Betts never plays for the Dodgers...does that impact the number of deals for players with only one more year to go in the future?
Mark P
8:13
Probably not, since the situation here is so unique and unprecedented.  Even under normal circumstances, all trades for one-year players carry some element of risk.  Like, if the season had begun as scheduled and Betts blew out his ACL or something

8:13
Do you answer questions off the cuff or do you look things up real quick before answering?
Mark P
8:13
I look things up if I don't already know the answer.  And sometimes I look things up to add an extra detail to make myself look smarter.  :)
My Starter
8:14
WALTER Johnson!

Randy Johnson all time. Never. Koufax, Seaver,

The big unit is no joke... but, really? No other answer than Sandy Koufax. Your youth is telling!!
Mark P
8:16
There easily 20-30 great answers for the "pick one starter to win you a must-win game" question.  I'm more prone to more modern players since then you're in the hypothetical grey area of trying to guess if 1913 Walter Johnson or 1963 Koufax could still be as dominant against modern players

Should the Yankees look to lock up some of their young minor Leaguers who never played a game like Deivi Garcia and Mike King or wait to see how it plays out they could get some real bargains though if they sign early career extensions
Mark P
8:18
There's an argument to be made for this strategy, though the Yankees in general don't sign as many extensions as most teams.  They seem to want as much information and track record as possible before deciding to commit to a player.

Will J Dyson be a full time player for Pitt this year?
Mark P
8:22
Seems like the Bucs' plan is to have Dyson and Heredia in a LH/RH platoon, though there's some degree of mix and match involved since the team will want to find time for all of its outfielders.  Polanco and Reynolds are the only true everyday outfielders.

8:22
What happened to Greg Holland?
Mark P
8:23
Signed a minor league deal with KC, though he is one of many players on minors contracts whose fate is in limbo due to the roster freeze
Hall of Fame
8:24
Who's the worst player in the Hall of Fame?  Who's the most underappreciated?
Mark P
8:25
I'll pass on the "worst" question, but in terms of underappreciated, I'd say it's just about all of the Negro League stars.

8:25
Are the Padres good enough to win this year? If not, what parts can they improve upon?
Mark P
8:26
The Padres still seemed a year away, in my books.  They have a lot of young players who still need to fully prove themselves as legitimate big leaguers before I can consider them to be actual contenders for the playoffs.
Non-Roster Player
8:27
Why can't non-roster players stay at spring training if they want to?
Mark P
8:27
Because then teams are obligated to keep facilities open and staffed so these players can work out
Diamond Dave
8:28
Harold Baines for worst HOF?
Mark P
8:29
Not even close
Baines' career has been rather unfairly diminished by all the controversy about his induction.  I wouldn't have voted him into Cooperstown, but the guy was an awesome hitter
Contraction?
8:30
How does minor league baseball look in 2021?
Mark P
8:32
The league's plan to cut down the number of minor league teams may not be necessary, since I unfortunately think a lot of those clubs won't be able to continue operations after a year of lost revenue.

If you're looking at an area of the baseball landscape that could look the most drastically different in the wake of this situation, it's probably the minors
Roy D.
8:35
What happened with Tin Lincecum’s return?  I know he was signed by Texas, but it never worked (?)  how does a pitcher with two Cys fall off so quickly.  Did he get injured while in the minors?  Do you have inside knowledge on what happened?
Mark P
8:36
No inside knowledge here, but it's not unusual to see some players just suddenly decline.
8:37
Every player hits the decline phase sooner or later, it's just a question of how steep or sudden that phase can be
Maybe Not The Worst....
8:38
.....but by far the most puzzling--...Harold Baines in the Hall of Fame opens the door to many, many, many others in comparison.  He was a good hitter----NOT awesome.   The only offensive stat he's near the top in for a career is hitting into double plays.   A complete fix by Tony LaRussa and Jerry Reinsdorf who were on the committee.
Mark P
8:40
If you look at any list (and people like Bill James have written whole books on this subject) of the "worst" players in the HOF, just about every name on that list was inducted by a veterans committee populated by ex-teammates or people connected to that player.  Back in the day when Frankie Frisch held a lot of influence on that committee, he opened the door to a lot of players that weren't nearly as good as Harold Baines

When a team tries to forecast the success of a starting pitcher, other than past statistics and medical records, what statistical indicators do they use to base their forecast on?
