Mark P

Nope.  Career too short, and he only had a few really great years.

is Taijuan Walker a real choice for the Jays ?
Mark P
11:40
Sure, I don't see why not.  The Jays have to like what they saw from him in his month with the team

11:41
Which free agent SP gets the largest contract after Bauer?
Mark P
11:42
Our top 50 list projected three-year, $39MM deals for both Tanaka and Odorizzi: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/11/mlb-free-agent-predictions-2021...
Now that Stroman and Gausman took the qualifying offers, Tanaka/Odorizzi are the best non-Bauer arms available.

Think Cards should consider trading Flaherty? Can’t see Cards competing with Dodgers, Braves, Padres and now Mets next several years.
Mark P
11:44
First of all, you'd be dealing low on Flaherty since he wasn't great last season.  Secondly, I doubt you'll ever see St. Louis embark on any kind of full-on rebuild....they're a team that wants and expects to contend every year
Hall of Fame
11:45
Should writers only get 5 choices a year? If you look at the ballot, there are names on there that make you shake your head. If you want a true Hall of Fame, you can't let everyone in.
Mark P
11:46
Of the four major sports, baseball is easily the pickiest when it comes to HOF inductions, which is how I feel it should be.

Putting a guy on the ballot when he'll be a one-and-out pick doesn't cause any harm.  A lot of players actually see just reaching the HOF ballot as an honor unto itself.

Can Vlad truly get and stay in shape for more than a few months at a time?
Mark P
11:49
By all accounts he is putting a concerted effort towards improving his fitness and cutting weight for 2021.  He obviously learned lessons about conditioning last year, but I'll add the caveat that 2020 was such an unusual set of circumstances that it's hard to use it as a predictor for Guerrero going forward
11:50
And, as I say in almost every chat, Vlad Jr. is still only 21 with slightly more than a full season's worth of MLB experience to his name.  It is far too early to make assumptions about what his entire career will be like, when Guerrero has only just scratched the surface

Sometimes writers say that a team needs to make a big signing to "make a statement" or "show they are real players".  Any truth to that, or is it just Boras-talk?
Mark P
11:53
There's definitely truth to that.  It's easy for a team to say they're willing to spend or that they're willing to make a big move, but until they actually do it, fans (and agents and players) have a right to be skeptical.

Now, the problems emerge when teams feel like they have to make a big signing and are rushed into a bad deal.
William Burns
11:54
Do you think the Diamondbacks will make any significant moves?
Mark P
11:56
The D'Backs are in a difficult spot, since everything kind of went wrong for them last year but not disastrously wrong in most cases --- so, they're taking the approach that they can get back on track in a more normal season.

It might end up being something of a quiet offseason for Arizona, but that front office is clever, I wouldn't rule out some lower-tier acquisitions that end up being important

Is Felix a HOFer?
Mark P
11:57
Nope.
I assume you mean Felix Hernandez.  If you meant Junior Felix or Felix Fermin.....the answer is still nope.
King Kelly
11:58
Can you see the Rays moving Snell?  If so, what kind of package would it take to get him?
Mark P
11:58
You can't rule out the Rays dealing any high-salaried player, but obviously they would want a lot for Snell.  At least one big-league ready player and at least one upper-tier prospect, to begin with.
Melchez

Would the Cubs pair up Heyward and Contreras to get rid of salary?  If so, what kind of package could get it done.  Tigers send a couple relievers and maybe a middle top 30 prospect?
Mark P
12:01
Heyward has full no-trade protection, so that's one obstacle.  I'm not sure the Cubs would want to move Contreras just for the sake of a salary dump, plus Heyward isn't the dead-weight contract he seemed a couple of seasons ago --- he was good in 2019 and quite good in 2020

12:04
Speaking of the Hall of Fame, how could we let guys like Kenny Lofton and Lance Berkman fall of the ballot so fast? Surely a decent number of our voters consider them at least borderline right?
Mark P
12:04
The overcrowded ballot hurt a lot of players in recent years, those two included.
Keith
12:04
With Clevinger injury, is San Diego a realistic landing point for Bauer?
Mark P
12:06
Would suddenly make a lot of more sense, eh?  Preller is no stranger to big splashy moves, and the Padres check a lot of the boxes Bauer wants in any new team.  Whether they're willing to put another big long-term contract on the books is another question, however, unless Bauer is open to a one-year deal with a big AAV
Lorenzo
12:06
Brett Gardner to PHI?  You know, that Girardi connection thing.
Mark P
12:07
That makes some sense, though I ultimately think Gardner will return to the Yankees
Denver Guy
12:08
OK, for reals ... what are the chances the Rockies actually make Arenado available, and would they really consider sending him to the Dodgers?
Mark P
12:11
If the Dodgers make a good enough offer, the Rox would have to consider it, as much as it would gall them to move Arenado within the division
12:12
Then again, Colorado seems to operate on emotion moreso than most front offices, so that might be enough to ignore offers from the Dodgers (or other NL West teams)

12:13
Marky Mark, my usual question, what’s this weeks walk up song for you?
Mark P
12:13
Your Woman, by White Town
White Sox
12:13
Can you see us signing both Ozuna and Bauer on the South Side?
Mark P
12:13
Nope.  Ozuna maybe, but I don't see Bauer as a personality fit with La Russa and Reinsdorf
Ryan
12:14
What is your opinion about Cano's contract. Should (part of) the remaining contract after a second PED suspension be voidable?
Mark P
12:14
I tend to say no, since it's not like Cano isn't already taking a big financial hit from the suspension
Angels
12:16
Sign Hand, Hendrics, mid tier SP, Catcher, and trade for a SP. That a plausible Angels offseasons? They need legit bullpen arms PERIOD
