Fair, though Goodwin would also help.  Plus, a Goodwin/Schebler combo might create some room for dealing Marsh, or maybe even Adell, for a top-tier pitcher

This is blasphemy to say, but was the Cubs winning the World Series in ‘16 the worst thing for them. Since then it’s been a downward spiral with no upward development in their core players and lack of addressing needs 3 off seasons in a row.
Mark P

No need for a survey on this one......I have to believe 100 percent of Cubs wouldn't trade the 2016 title for anything.

A y chance Kenley Jansen gets traded?
Mark P
12:58
A very slim chance, but I'm not sure how much of a market there is for a pricey reliever who has been a little shaky rather than his old elite self.  As the Brad Hand example might indicate, teams don't seem keen on paying too much for bullpen help

15 years ago after losing 119 games the Tigers shocked everyone and signed Pudge Rodriguez to 5 years 40 million to assist in rebuilding of young pitching staff, could this be happening again with J.T. Realmuto this year ?  Some beat reporters in motown have been throwing that around a little lately. Are they a legitimate landing spot for J.T. or are the beat writers just wishful thinking?
Mark P
1:01
My guess is that it's very much wishful thinking.  2003 was a long time ago and Realmuto's situation is much different than Pudge's.  I have to imagine Realmuto is pretty eager to win immediately and doesn't want to spend another couple of years rebuilding.

Once and for all, how does a negotiating window work? Does the player's departing team negotiate the trade return based on the value of the renegotiated contract?
Mark P
1:03
Do you mean for a situation like, "Cleveland works out a Lindor trade, but gives the new team a negotiating window to talk to Lindor about an extension?"

It kind of varies based on the situation, I'd imagine, since those situations are pretty uncommon.  I would also guess that the acquiring team already has some loose idea (likely info acquired from his agent) of what the star would want in a contract extension, so it's not a total waste of everyone's time.

Arizona has seemed to have a bright future for a few years before 2020. An aberration or is there legitimate cause for concern?
Mark P
1:04
As someone who picked the D'Backs to be a wild card team going into 2020, I was surprised they were such afterthoughts.  But, as per everything Hazen and Lovullo have said, it seems like the club is somewhat approaching it as a bit of an aberration of a 60-game season, rather than a sign that their roster needs to be blown up or reassembled.

The Reds...just dont understand why disassemble? Revenue would of been back next season...now no one will wanna fill the seats.
Mark P
1:08
Between losing attendance revenues and (probably more importantly) losing the revenue-sharing funds, I can believe that the Reds took a substantial financial hit in 2020.

Now, as you mentioned, reacting to this one-year hit by moving big contracts seems drastic, since it's not like fans won't eventually be back (maybe even before 2021 is out).  The optics of going all-in for 2020, reaching the playoffs, but then immediately moving big players again has to be rough for any Reds fans to stomach

Vlad going back to third isn’t happening right, it seems much more likely that Bichette would get moved to third because a trade or signing then Vlad actually playing third full time?
Mark P
1:09
I doubt Vlad will ever be a full-time third baseman.  But there's no harm in seeing if he can play the position every once in a while.  Some versatility can only help both himself and the Blue Jays

As much as I love the Blue Jays, it seems like they aren't really sure who they want/what they need. They've been tied to quite a few names, but I'm sure that they can't afford everyone. What are should the Jays TRULY be looking at? Outfield, infield, pitching, etc.
Mark P
1:13
As a Jays fan, my concern is that agents and players are to some extent using them as a threat in order to extract more money from the teams the player really wants to play for in 2021.  For LeMahieu, for instance, I'm sure he'd sign with Toronto if their offer really blew the Yankees' offer out of the water, but I do wonder if his camp is going to the Yankees with the Jays' contract and saying "the Jays are willing to pay that extra year or extra $20MM, are you?"

Who will be the next Brave to make the Hall of Fame?
Mark P

I think McGriff will get in via the veterans committee, and I think he'll probably be counted as an Atlanta player for "cap on the plaque" purposes.

Is it conceivable that the owners would offer to expand by 2 teams to throw a bone to the Players union in negotiations? 32 teams would mean easier scheduling, balanced divisions and a financial shot in the arm to current owners. The only question left would be what 2 cities amongst Nashville, Las Vegas, Portland, Montreal, etc would be worthy?
Mark P
1:16
I'm sure this news would irritate Dave Dombrowski, who apparently based his decision on joining the Phillies upon hearing from several people in the know that MLB wasn't planning on expanding (or moving franchises) any time soon.
1:17
Plans can change, obviously, and it's possible that expansion becomes part of CBA talks

Sugano or Arihara, which would you rather have?
Mark P

Having never seen either guy pitch, I guess I have to say Sugano based on sheer track record.

Your Feelings on Andruw Jones being in the HOF?

I don't think I'd vote for him but he certainly deserves some proper consideration.

Wouldn't be surprised if he's another veterans committee pick down the road

Any chance the Rangers sign all three of Arihara Sugano and Kim
Mark P
1:22
That would be a fun, bold move from Texas, but I doubt they'd go quite that big.  Two out of the three would make sense....even with both Arihara and Sugano signed, it's not like their rotation is so deep that adding two pitchers would create a logjam

I forgot the site, but read somewhere that the Braves were expected to make an offer to Ozuna in December.  It's beginning to seem like wishful thinking on the writer's part.  Would AA consider making an offer to Ozuna, regardless of the DH being settled?  If not, what do you think AA will do?
Mark P
1:23
Given how the Braves tend to operate in silence, they might very well have already made Ozuna several offers.
Common sense,

Jays trade Martinez, Warmoth, kloffeinstein. Does that net them an ace pitcher?
Mark P
1:25
Probably not for a proper ace, unless it's a situation where the Jays are taking on the entirety of a pricey contract from a team that is desperate to move payroll

Do Bonds and/or Clemens make the Hof this year or next?
Mark P

Nope.  Too many voters are deadset against selecting them, they'll never quite muster enough support to get over the 75% line

Best 6+ year contract ever? They seem to always be a mistake.
