For sure a strike?
Mark P
1:05
Oh, I wouldn't say a strike is for sure.

.....it could also be a lockout!

I was telling people i'd prefer Juan Soto at 13/450 over Acuna at 10/135. They said that's nuts. Do you think he's has a ceiling that is going to be all-time special, like I do? Like the pure hitting version of Mike Trout.
Mark P
1:08
Well, it's kind of nuts since if your choice is between those two players at those prices, obviously you take Acuna.

But Soto looks awesome, no question
Tanaka
1:08
If my over/under is $14mm AAV, which side do you place your bet?
Mark P
1:09
Under.  There hasn't been much buzz on Tanaka at all.
Same old Pirates
1:09
Does the recent signing of Wilmer Difo indicate that Adam Frazier will be traded soon?  For all of the needs the Pirates have, Difo seems kind of superfluous otherwise, another Erik Gonzalez...or are they planning to continue the Cole Tucker as an outfielder experiment?
Mark P
1:10
Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic made the same point about the Difo signing, in that it would give Pittsburgh some IF depth in the event of a Frazier trade.  Not saying that a Frazier deal is imminent or anything, but the Bucs are at least getting some backup in place

Has there ever been talk of an off-season transaction deadline? At a certain point it seems like making guys wait to sign so close to, or even into, Spring Training is poor form. Let's make 2/1 the cut-off and get the show on the road.
Mark P
1:11
That would squeeze contracts even more, since teams would wait until January 30th and then try to lowball any players who hadn't signed
John
1:12
Is it Yankees or retire for Brett Gardner?
Mark P
1:13
There has been speculation that the Phillies could be a fit for Gardner, due to Girardi's presence and the Phils' need for outfielders.
Angels fam
1:13
Bauer to the Angels actually makes even more sense now that I think about it.  If Ohtani is healthy and they stick to pitching him once a week they can use Bauer as he wants and stick w a 5 man starting staff instead of 6
Mark P
1:15
He makes a lot of sense for the Angels, no doubt.  They'll have something of an off-kilter rotation anyway.....but then again, between off-days, seven-inning DHs, rainouts, probable COVID postponements, etc., every team might have an off-kilter rotation in 2021

To what extent is not yet knowing where we will be playing home games in April, and the travel restrictions between Canada and the USA, hampering the Jays attempts to improve the roster?
Mark P
1:16
I'd be shocked if this wasn't the primary obstacle for a lot of players
Trade Prediction
1:17
Sox trade Benintendi to Mariners for Justin Dunn. Yes or no?
Mark P
1:18
Mariners aren't doing that.  Doesn't make much sense from their end.
NFL
1:18
Rams v Packers, who's going to win?
Mark P
1:18
I'm a Green Bay fan so I'm cautiously optimistic.  Always have to be concerned by that Rams defense, however.
Braves fan
1:19
Freeman's next contract prediction?
Mark P
1:19
Something very similar to Goldschmidt's extension with St. Louis, perhaps with a few extra million thrown in
Klubot
1:20
Can I be QO’d after this season?
Mark P
1:20
If Kluber spends the entire season with the Yankees, yes
Dodgers
1:21
You're waaaaaay off in stating Cleveland would want a lot more than Ruiz and Gonsolin for Ramirez. I would actually argue that the Dodgers would be giving up too much. I'm thinking you might need to brush up on Ruiz and Gonsolin.
Mark P
1:22
Seriously?  Ramirez is owed $9MM this season, $11MM in 2022 via club option, and $13MM in 2023 via club option.  That is a very very reasonable price to pay for a 28-year-old third baseman coming off an MVP caliber season.

Ruiz and Gonsolin are very good young players, but come on, Cleveland would want (and receive) way more if they make Ramirez available
Orioles
1:24
Could you theorize some of these “major league” starting pitchers the Orioles have offers on
Mark P
1:25
I'd assume these are low-cost deals in the realm of $3-4MM for veteran pitchers who either have notable injury histories or maybe aren't coming off great 2020 seasons
1:26
Or, the Orioles are aiming higher, but have made offers to pitchers that aren't likely to accept such offers since they want to play for a contender.
Wrigley
1:27
If you were in charge of Cubs roster, would you take similar path that they are taking, or make one last run with tweeks to roster?  Obviously, some changes were needed.  How would you have fixed roster that ended last season so disappointedly?
Mark P
1:29
It would depend on what my specific instructions from ownership were.  If Jed Hoyer has been told that payroll can't exceed X dollars, then he has to get down to that number, no ifs and or buts.  If he has more flexibility, then trying moves like trading one of the Cubs' larger contracts for another large-ish contract on another team (a bad contract swap, if you will) might be more strategic
1:30
Really, the biggest problem with the Cubs is that they're only starting the heavy lifting now on a rebuild/reload.  It seemed like they knew things were going sideways two years ago but then didn't do anything about it.
La Cheeserie
1:32
For the critics of the Mark Shapiro regime, this off-season has to be a microcosm of fans angst no? Lots of talk, very little improvement being made and a contract extension on top of it. Do the jays have enough talent and depth to make it into the top 2 of the division this year?
Mark P
1:33
I rank the Jays behind the Yankees, and I still have to put them behind Tampa since the Rays will still figure out a way to be good despite losing Morton and Snell.

I'm in the camp that thinks about 80% of the criticism directed towards Shapiro and Atkins is laughably off-base, so I'm hardly throwing in the towel on the offseason just yet.
FortyTwo
1:35
Any chance Brewers get somebody like Didi to play 3B on a higher AAV deal for like 2 or 3 seasons? Their window is now!
Mark P
1:35
I'd rank that as unlikely, but the longer Gregorius is on the market, the more it might create the possibility that a team like Milwaukee could think about creative ways to sign him.
Pumpsie Green
1:36
Looking like zero new HOF inductees this year. Is that good or bad?
Mark P
1:37
I strongly doubt there will be an induction ceremony this year anyway, so I can see voters factoring that into their decision-making.  Not that there are any slam-dunk new arrivals on the ballot, but some writers might feel that the class of 2020 deserves "their day" before putting anyone else in

What’s the best baseball video game of all-time?
Mark P
1:39
I always loved the old Ken Griffey Jr. game for SNES
