Definitely worth a flyer. But need a good plan B. Even if he's healthy, can't count on him for more than 100-120 starts.

Are rays a middle of the order bat away from making the playoffs?
AvatarJason Martinez
6:12
I'd say yes, but the pitching would also have to hold up. With so many young guys contributing, there's always a chance that a good number of them take a step backwards or get injured. Adding another late-inning bullpen arm with closing experience would help a lot.

Who is playing 2b for the Nats on opening day?  Call it!
AvatarJason Martinez
6:15
I mentioned Daniel Murphy earlier. I like LeMahieu a lot but I hate seeing a lineup that's so right-handed heavy (assuming they don't re-sign Harper, Soto and Eaton are the only LHHs). So let's go with Jed Lowrie. That will be my pick.

Can I trade for Dee Gordon, move Merrfield to 1B and try to crack 300 SB?

Do it! Please! Gordon-Hamilton-Mondesi-Merrifield-Willie McGee-Vince Coleman

The Rays just spent $30M. What are the odds spend more than that on a single player this year?
AvatarJason Martinez
6:18
That still puts them at just $52MM estimated payroll this season and $27MM in guarantees in '20. https://www.rosterresource.com/mlb-tampa-bay-rays-info/
6:20
I think Oakland can be a surprise spender this offseason like when they came out of nowhere to sign Cespedes. They're at $73MM projection for '19 but Piscotty's contract is the only one left on the books after the season ... https://www.rosterresource.com/mlb-oakland-athletics-info/
Hopeless in Pittsburgh
6:21
Heard a rumor today on the local talk radio of the Pirates front office wanting to start season with a $75 million payroll.  If true, do you see them doing anything other than shedding salary with the Nova trade?
AvatarJason Martinez
6:24
They're pretty much right there now and a Cervelli deal would put them under $70MM. They could add a SS for under $5MM (Galvis, Iglesias or Hechavarria) and maybe another pitcher. It's not a bad roster. They'd need a lot to go right to be a playoff team, but I don't see them regressing from the 82-win team they were last season. A full season of Archer (if he's at his best) will help a lot.

Saw on ESPN where they say the White Sox are now the front runners in acquiring Harper.  Do you see this happening?
AvatarJason Martinez
6:27
Sure, I can see it. I'm not that familiar with Chicago, though. If Harper plays for the White Sox, how often would he get to hang with Kris Bryant? I believe their wives are best friends so at least they'd get to hang out all the time.
Angels

Over/under Trout extension 12 years 500 million?
AvatarJason Martinez
6:29
Assuming Harper and Machado sign for $35MM/yr or less, that would sound about right to me. Would definitely have an opt-out or two in there. If Machado and/or Harper get $40MM/yr, I'd bump that AAV to $45MM.
Kicking the tires
6:31
Winter meetings essentially over. Did the Giants call in sick? New looks to be training in the old SF way..,kick tires then make bold moves on 2nd and third tiers.

I took out some $$$ last night and then stood at a BlackJack table and watched for an hour waiting for the "right time" to jump in. I eventually just went to my room and fell asleep. If I would've started, however, I'm pretty sure I'd be there all night. I think Zaidi is going to make a ton of moves this offseason. I just think the first one will be tough because it will be scrutinized. Especially if it's MadBum.
6:34
Sorry if that was a bad comparison. Sometimes my comparisons only make sense in my own head.

Is Happ a done deal?
AvatarJason Martinez
6:37
Sounds like it. Mark Feinsand tweeted "agreed to the structure on a contract". Not the magic words for me to update the depth charts, but hard to see it falling apart at this point.

Is the staff of mlbtr in Las Vegas?  Just wondering if you all had to travel there.
AvatarJason Martinez
6:39
Just me. It's actually easier to do this stuff from home, but I'm close enough and wanted to get away for a few days. It's more of a networking event and we're constantly monitoring and updating news. Can't get too distracted.

Should the Friars just wait until next years FA to sign Rendon/Arenado as their everyday 3B? 6 years/$150MM should do the trick, no?
AvatarJason Martinez
6:41
I think Arenado will get at least 7 yr, $200MM and I think Rendon will get at least 6 yr, $165MM. That's assuming they have their normal season in '19. They'll get less than Harper/Machado because they're a few years older.
6:43
Should the Padres wait? Sure, if they're willing to spend that kind of $$$ and think they have a legitimate shot.
Giant MESS!
6:44
Would Ottavino strike out Babe Ruth all the time? I say NO WAY
AvatarJason Martinez
6:48
If Ruth played today, he'd be facing that kind of filth on a regular basis so I imagine he'd be sort of used to it and could make adjustments. But he'd still have a tough time. I know the pitchers back then weren't throwing very hard. So I'm guessing the hitters didn't have enough bat speed to catch up to high 90's with crazy movement.

6:50
What would you expect an Adam Ottavino contract to look like this offseason? Since he wasn’t a closer last year will he come in a lot lower than Kimbrel  Britton and Familia  or does it not matter?
AvatarJason Martinez
6:51
I think he'll get 3 or 4 yrs at $10-$12MM/season. So not the $15MM he'd get as a closer, but that would be elite setup man/potential closer $$$.

6:52
Is this officially the longest Live Chat in MLBTR history?
AvatarJason Martinez
6:53
Not sure of the record. I don't have to board my plane for another hour so I think I can get to 3 hours.

6:54
What are the chances the Twins actually sign Nelson Cruz?
AvatarJason Martinez
6:56
My guess is that it will come down to whichever team he likes better. Both should be able to give him a 2-year deal in the $12-16MM range. I think the Twins can surprise some people. They have no $$$ on the books after '19 so they could make some interesting moves this offseason.
Orioles
6:56
Brian Dozier or DJ LeMahieu, who is likelier to sign a one year deal to play second for half a year with villar at short and be flipped at the deadline
AvatarJason Martinez
6:58
Dozier. He's coming off of a bad season and his trade value would skyrocket if he returns to his '15-'17 form. LeMahieu is solid. Should land a multi-year deal on a good team.
Andrew
6:59
What could the blue jays get for Marcus Stroman or Aaron Sanchez
AvatarJason Martinez
7:02
Probably not enough for the Jays to make a deal. Stroman was bad in '18 and Sanchez has been hurt often since his breakout season in '16. So bad time to trade them even if they are taking a step back. Probably best to hope they can stay healthy and boost trade value in July.
The mighty Thor
7:03
Was there really any chance of me leaving?
AvatarJason Martinez
7:05
Of course there's always a chance. I liked how Preller explained it in his interview with Mad Dog Russo today. No such thing as "untouchables". He trade Tatis if a team gives him 2 Tatis' in return. There's always a price. It just might be too high for the other 29 teams.
