Desmond as well, of course.
Mike
3:55
How long until we see Giolito in the majors?
Jeffrey Todd
3:56
He probably won't get a chance so long as some combo of Roark/Ross/Arroyo is reasonably productive. But I guess it's not inconceivable that he could tear up Triple-A and force his way up regardless.
I'll still be surprised if it's before, say, July of this year.
Quite possibly later.
Joe Jackson
3:57
Since it's already March shouldn't Houston at least consider bringing in Morneau as a veteran backup or stopgap to the kids similar to what you mentioned before with veterans?
Jeffrey Todd
3:57
I've thought about that match. Hard to know what Morneau is looking for, though. I mean, he did come back last year when he certainly could have called it quits, so it seems he wants to play. But maybe he won't bite at a minor league deal?
Roy Hobbs
3:57
What player do you see the Braves targeting in the future to shore up their catching position? Lucroy? Wieters? They really don't have a lot of internal options.
Jeffrey Todd
3:58
I thought they were a prime team to pursue Wieters this winter, so I could see that happening next. Lucroy probably doesn't have enough control left.

if Melvin Upton Jr repeats his strong 2nd half from last year to begin this year, could he actually have trade value again?
Jeffrey Todd
3:59
Sure. I mean, probably not beyond the value of his contract, but it's plenty conceivable that he'd be a guy teams would like to have on their roster. SDP could end up saving some money, at least.
Chris Young just got 2/12, and Melvin could end up looking a lot like him.

Could MLB base the QO off the NFL's franchise tag?
Jeffrey Todd
3:59
If it wanted the rules to make even less sense, sure.
Al West
3:59
Houston's to lose?
Jeffrey Todd
4:00
No way, that division is wide open. Entire AL is, really. Is there any team that would be a total stunner to make the postseason?
Geoffrey
4:00
Who wins? Gossage's mustache, Kuechel's beard, or DeGrom's hair?
Jeffrey Todd
4:00
Goose in a landslide.
West Coast Mets fan
4:01
My memory is fuzzy, but I thought Jose applied for citizenship
Jeffrey Todd
4:01
That was reported some time ago but it's not clear if he ever went through with it, so far as I've read.
4:02
(For those wondering: only relevant to the question of his status moving forward b/c a hypothetical conviction would come with immigration consequences.)
Nathan
4:02
Besides this site's podcast, what are baseball podcasts do you recommend?
Jeffrey Todd
4:02
Buster always has good guests. And Effectively Wild is great.
Though I'll admit I'm not a big podcast listener. Spend too much time doing our own show!
West Coast Mets fan
4:03
If you were the Mets GM what final tweaking would you make before opening day?
Jeffrey Todd
4:03
Aside from a few final roster decisions, I think they are pretty well set. On the whole, I really liked their offseason.

4:04
I missed it, what did Gossage say?
Jeffrey Todd
4:04
He basically dropped the f bomb 25 times in relation to everything about the modern game of baseball.
Dan Duquette
4:04
How much did I overpay Alvarez by?
Jeffrey Todd
4:05
I don't think it's an overpay in a vacuum, necessarily. He's still a pretty good hitter, and adding him as a DH is fine. Issue for me is it bumps Trumbo to the OF.
I'd probably rather have Pedro as my dedicated DH, with a righty to spell him, and use Trumbo's 9+ mil on a more well-rounded outfielder.
4:06
But hey, the offseason progresses one step at a time. Can't always predict what will occur and what will be available down the line.

Could Mlbtr expand to YouTube? I'd much rather watch videos than listen to podcasts
Jeffrey Todd
4:06
You don't want to watch videos of me!

4:07
Any word on Kyle Lohse? What teams might have legit interest in him at this point?
Jeffrey Todd
4:07
Crickets.
Rob
4:07
Anything new on Jose Fernandez the second baseman?
Jeffrey Todd
4:09
Crickets. But Badler suggests he could be ready to sign this summer if he's able to progress through the process as usual. He's a pretty interesting guy b/c of his age.

Why hasn't EE Signed a new deal with blue Jays ?
