Because the Angels aren't trading Trout.

Should the Reds sell high on Duvall now?
Steve Adams
4:02
I'd be willing to sell Duvall and DeSclafani. I don't much care for Duvall's high-K, low-OBP game, though he did boost his walk rate as the season wore on, which was nice. But he's a low-OBP slugger whose perceived value was tied largely to HUGE love from defensive metrics despite the fact that he was basically always labeled as a bat without a position in his prospect days. I don't think he's going to repeat a three-win season, myself.
And DeSclafani just has tons of surplus value as a solid mid-rotation starter with four years of cheap control remaining. Reds aren't going to contend in the next couple of years, so seems wise to explore cashing him in for a more controllable haul and multiple pieces.

I like you Steve so I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Desmond was NOT signed to be the primary 1B, who do you think I'm going to have play there instead?
Steve Adams
4:05
I mean, I'd hope he wasn't. I don't get that move at all if that was truly the case, as he's never played there, the position is a waste of his athleticism, and his bat just isn't good enough to merit everyday reps at first base. He's a slightly above-average hitter, which makes him a damn good piece to put in left field, center field or somewhere else in the infield (not that the Rox have any openings there).

I still think they made tons of sense for Edwin and make some degree of sense for Trumbo, if he's willing to come down from his $70MM asking price (though I'd only want him for about 40-60% of that number).

Is Jorge Posada a Hall of Famer?
Steve Adams
4:05
I don't think so
Chris
4:05
Estrada plus a low level prospect for McCutchen? Put Biagini in the rotation?
Steve Adams
4:06
The Pirates were targeting multiple top prospects from the Nationals -- guys well within the top 50 to 25 overall names in the game. That asking price was crazy to me, but it still demonstrates that they're not taking one year of an expensive mid-rotation arm that pitched through a back injury and a throwaway prospect for Cutch.

I don't think the Cubs will gamble with Schwaber catching, so with Montero being a bit brittle will they have any interest in adding a catcher?
Steve Adams
4:07
I can see Schwarber getting a handful of games back there. Between him, Montero and especially Castillo (who should catch almost every day), I don't think there's need beyond maybe signing a veteran to a minor league deal to stash at AAA.
Adam
4:07
Marlins done? I'd think they'd be adding a bench bat, but I'm not sure.
Steve Adams
4:08
Makes sense to add a right-handed infield corner bat. I think they'll pull someone like Trevor Plouffe, Dae-ho Lee, Adam Rosales, etc. Maybe a Jerry Sands type if they decide they don't want to commit the 40-man spot.
Thor
4:09
John Jaso--anyone interested?
Steve Adams
4:09
Market is flooded with lefty-hitting 1B/DH/OF types of bats -- and honestly, ones that are better than Jaso. I doubt he drums up much interest.
Willson Contreras
4:09
You meant me.. :)
Steve Adams
4:10
Good lord. Yes. Obviously I meant Contreras, and not Castillo. C'mon Steve.
Russ
4:10
Team that match up with the reds for zach cozart
Steve Adams
4:11
Mariners. Padres if the asking price is low enough that they don't feel like they're giving up too much value. But there aren't too many win-now teams looking for a shortstop this winter, which sucks for the Reds.
Mr. White Sox
4:11
Abreau for Dahl and McMahon??? Does this get it done?
Steve Adams
4:11
No way I give up Dahl for Abreu, let alone Dahl and another interesting piece.
Filoberto
4:11
Can Kurt Suzuki get more than just a back-up role somewhere?
Steve Adams
4:12
It seems unlikely. There just aren't that many starting jobs left. One of these veteran types is going to fall into some playing time when he signs with the White Sox, but beyond that, the list of teams looking for starting catchers is small, and most of the names on that list already have an option that's at least as interesting, if not more interesting than Zook. (The ChiSox do not.)

Am I the only one who likes what the Braves are doing in rebuild and think it's way,way ahead of schedule?
Steve Adams
4:14
The Braves have drawn near-universal praise for the work they've done in rebuilding the farm. I think dissenters are in the vast minority.

Trumbo to the Angels and Cron and Marte get traded for pitching depth (bullpen or back-end SP). Seem plausible?
Steve Adams
4:16
Not really. Angels aren't going to sign anyone of that magnitude due to the luxury tax, and how much better does Trumbo make them than Cron already does? I agree he's an upgrade, but is he worth $15MM+ when Cron is only going to make around $550-600K?
Also, don't think Cron/Marte fetches much in the way of MLB-ready pitching help.
Teddy
4:16
Why would the M's matchup on Cozart? They already traded for Segura...
Steve Adams
4:17
Touche. Brain fart/holiday hangover. I still can't wrap my head around trading for Segura and putting him back at SS when his poor defense there mitigates so much of his value. At any rate-- yeah that was a poor rushed answer on my behalf. Between that and the Contreras/Castillo thing, I'm on fire today.

With 7 years and a ton of money left, can a 33 year old Joey Votto net a considerable return for the Reds?
Steve Adams
4:18
Full no-trade clause and has said he has no interest in being traded.

Thus concludes our weekly Joey Votto question. :)
Rangers fan
4:18
Who's rangers starting 1st baseman in 17? Would Gallo and profar get a good one?
Steve Adams
4:18
I'd imagine they'll wrap something up with Napoli and give him the bulk of the work there.
Jurickson Profar
4:18
What gets me to the Dodgers?
Steve Adams
4:20
I'm getting bombed by Jurickson Profar questions today, so I'll say this:

I know he was once the No. 1 prospect in all of baseball, but that was four years ago now, and in the interim he's missed two years due to multiple shoulder surgeries and hit .239/.321/.338. He's young and has lots of upside, but he's not someone I'd give up a significant MLB piece for, especially not since he only has three years of club control remaining. He got MLB service time while on the DL for those shoulder operations.
Orioles add Jesus Montero on a minor league deal (per Jon Heyman). Get excited Baltimore fans.

Mateo Sheffield Tate/Abreu enough for Quintana?
Steve Adams
4:21
I don't see any way Quintana goes to NYY without Frazier and/or Torres being involved.
