MLBTR Live Chat with Steve Adams -- 12/27/16

Can't see the Twins moving Buxton.
Ryan
4:39
Phillies in with outside chance on Battista?
Steve Adams
4:39
If they're comfortable using him in RF and at 1B, sure. Most of the outfield prospects he'd be "blocking" need some more minor league time anyway.
Dave
4:40
What should the Cardinals do with Johnny Peralta?
Steve Adams
4:40
I'd just play him at third, bounce Gyorko all over the diamond and enjoy the depth. Matt Adams is the more superfluous piece there to me.
Dan
4:40
Does Braun get traded or is he a Brewer for life?
Steve Adams
4:41
I'd fully expect him to be moved before the end of his contract, though it might not be this offseason given the crowded corner market
Jay
4:41
Red Sox done making moves?
Steve Adams
4:41
Nah -- they were linked to Trevor Plouffe like 15 hours ago. They're still tinkering.

Is the live chat fun for you or dreadful?
Steve Adams
4:42
I enjoy them, despite the wide number of people I have to mute for being generally annoying and the 1-2 people every chat who feel compelled to petulantly whine about how I hate [insert team here] because I'm not answering any questions on them. (There are thousands of readers in here asking questions every chat -- not getting to every question, ha)
4:43
That sounds like a negative review, but they're largely fun. Who wouldn't want to BS about baseball for a bit once a week?
Alex
4:43
Do you think Braves should go after a young catcher instead of Matt Wieters? Like Jays Mcguire or someone blocked like Rox Murphy or Dodgers Barnes
Steve Adams
4:45
I'd rather just stick with Flowers and piece together the backup role than sign Wieters (unless his price is surprisingly reasonable -- 2/20 or something). I don't think trading for one of those guys you mentioned would necessarily be as easy as you suggested.
Jake
4:45
Over/Under 175 strikeouts for Joey Gallo if give 500+ AB's?
Steve Adams
4:45
Over. By a lot.
Max
4:45
How high would you rank Corey Seager in a keeper league?
Steve Adams
4:46
I own Corey Seager in a keeper league. I am very happy to own Corey Seager in a keeper league. I think Corey Seager is the cornerstone of my keeper league team. In how many more sentences can I say "Corey Seager" and "keeper league?" I don't Corey-Seager-keeper-league-ing know.
Oh wait Mookie's the cornerstone of that time, I suppose. At any rate, Seager's going to be a perennial MVP candidate. He's one of the most valuable assets in any fantasy format

you swine.. calling this chat BS.. off with your thumbs !!...
Steve Adams

I can still type with eight fingers!
JR
4:48
Edwin Diaz and Dan Vogelbach and stuff (Gohara?) for Gio Gonzalez and Victor Robles. Who says no?
Steve Adams
4:48
Diaz is a monster, but I don't think the Nationals have any intention of moving Robles.
Alex
4:49
Andrelton Simmons to the Cardinals. Realistic?
Steve Adams
4:49
I don't really see the fit.

Jose altuve 30/30 this year possible?
Steve Adams
4:50
He came within six homers of doing it this year, so of course it's possible. Granted, I think his power will tick downward a bit in 2017, but sure it's plausible anyhow.

Most likely player to be traded before the season starts?
Steve Adams
4:50
Jay Bruce?
Javier
4:51
Austin Hedges good enough bat to be the everyday starter? Def is on point, but bottom of the order bat at best?
Steve Adams
4:52
His defense is enough to earn him a lengthy audition as the starter -- at least a season and a half or so. And he obliterated AAA pitching this year, though given the launching pad he played in the numbers aren't quite as impressive as they'd seem. At any rate, I think he can be a starter yeah.

You never answer any questions about the Mud Hens...
Steve Adams
4:53
You've sniffed out one of the many biases I have. Rats.
Bryce Harper
4:53
Am I unreasonable to ask for 400mm?
Steve Adams
4:56
I don't think there was ever anything to that report. I think it was sloppy to even put it out there in the manner that the publication in question chose to, and both Scott Boras and Mike Rizzo both denied that negotiations have even taken place shortly thereafter. If Harper plays like he did in 2015 over the next two years, then you can bet he'll be seeking $400MM+ (as will Machado).

But I don't think he's already asked for it.

Surprised to see Nova resign with the Bucs?
Steve Adams
4:57
Very. And stunned that he only got $26MM guaranteed. So much so that I wonder about his medicals or some unknown circumstances that led to such a limited market. But as it stands, I love it for Pittsburgh.
Dammage

Is the relief market going to continue to explode (contract wise) or is this season some weird anomaly?
Steve Adams
5:00
Chapman and Jansen were special cases -- they're the two best relievers that have ever hit the open market in this era of television revenue. We've been saying $80MM+ for them for the better part of a year -- though I honestly thought one would top $90MM as well. Melancon had the best bottom-line numbers of any pitcher that's hit the market since David Robertson.

In general, relief prices are probably going to trend up. Andrew Miller seemed undervalued even when he signed, and I bet a lot of teams would love a mulligan on his free agency.

But as far as second- and third-tier guys go... the $15-20MM deals we've been seeing aren't exactly new. And the way in which some of them blow up (as I'm predicting with Mike Dunn) will continue to serve as somewhat of a cautionary tale.
