MLBTR Live Chat with Steve Adams -- 2/24/17

I dig it. The Padres aren't going to be good, so let's get weird and do some weird things.
Talk baseball
3:10
Why do u answer questions non related to baseball. It's a baseball chat.
Steve Adams
3:11
It's actually a "Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams." Be glad I'm not talking about board games, beer, video games, etc. -- WHICH I ALSO LOVE.

Yes -- I occasionally stray from baseball for 10 seconds at a time -- sorry for the hardship in your free baseball chat, naysayers. :)

did i doa bad thing???
Steve Adams
3:12
I can't fathom what on earth he was thinking. That was one of the single stupidest and most inexplicable rants I've ever seen from someone in the industry. Ill-conceived, irresponsible and flat-out stupid.

With the loss of Reyes the cardinals bullpen got much weaker... does it make sense to target Joe Blanton? I think he'd fit in nicely in STL
Steve Adams
3:13
Sure but some reports have suggested that he wants to pitch on the West Coast. And shoring up the bullpen is nice, but I don't know that I see a direct correlation between losing Reyes and signing Blanton.
But, on a one-year deal, I'd support virtually any team signing Blanton at this point. He's better than every club's seventh-best reliever

I used to write for this site and was the original host of these chats. Do I do anything besides dance in my MLBTR piles of cash nowadays?
Steve Adams

Ha

Tim runs the business side of MLBTR, Hoops Rumors, Pro Football Rumors and Pro Hockey Rumors. He got our mobile app up and running, orchestrated the acquisition of Roster Resource and does countless other things to help keep the lights on and improve the experience. He's a damn good boss to work for

Do you ever go back and look at MLBTR free agent predictions and laugh?
Steve Adams
3:18
I don't think there's ever been one where I just thought "How on EARTH did we think that?" A lot of effort goes into those, and we get takes from a number of industry people in addition to bandying about the numbers ourselves. It's worth noting that the numbers we end up publishing on our Top 50 are never universally agreed upon. I pushed Tim and Jeff for weeks to boost the Jason Castro prediction, for instance, and would've been nearly right on the mark. But, I also wanted to go closer to $60MM for Ivan Nova, ha, so it goes both ways!

Will Addison Russell ever increase his base-stealing?
Steve Adams
3:20
Maybe a tick, but I don't think he's going to be a 20 SB kind of guy

Is joey Gallo a bust and can I get anything for him
Steve Adams
3:20
Joey Gallo just turned 23. Calling him a bust because he hasn't succeeded in the Majors at an age when most guys are just reaching Double-A is silly

Do you collect baseball cards? If so, who is your best/favorite?
Steve Adams
3:21
You might think I do, given my job, but I'm not into it. Sorry to disappoint.
If you do, we give away player autographs on our Instagram from time to time (cheap plug!): instagram.com/traderumorsmlb -- check it out

Have you ever caught a home run or foul ball at a game?
Steve Adams
3:24
I have! I've caught multiple foul balls -- the best of which came off the bat of Joe Crede in MN at the Metrodome. I was behind home plate, the ball went straight back into the upper deck and was either dropped bounced back down literally into my outstretched palm as I was stretching. I had absolutely no idea it was even coming at me, ha

Do the Indians turn to Mejia behind the plate at any point this year, or is he more of a 2018 guy?
Steve Adams
3:25
More 2018, I'd imagine

Was Wieters overpaid? 10.5 mil is a lot for a 243 hitter.
Steve Adams
3:26
Looking at batting average is a terrible way to evaluate any player, let alone a catcher.
Tonka
3:27
Sale, Price, Porcello, Wright and... Pomeranz or Rodriguez?
Steve Adams
3:27
I might pick Pomeranz and E-Rod over Wright at this point -- especially given the apparently lingering effects of his shoulder troubles.
Robert Gsellman
3:28
Tell the world why I am the next stud Met pitcher.
Steve Adams
3:28
Because your name is goofy?

I don't think Gsellman's a stud in the making. I do think he's a solid mid- or back-of-the-rotation arm for the Mets, though
3:30
Ok -- I'm going to wrap up for the week. I'll be back in the usual Tuesday 2pm CT time slot next week! Thanks for chatting everyone! You can ask me any of the cavalcade of questions I didn't get to (even non-baseball ones -- much to the pitchfork mob's dismay -- on Twitter: @Adams_Steve
Take care and enjoy your weekend!
