Byram is an excellent player, an excellent one. His defense isn't his strong suit, but it's also not a mess.
7:27
He wouldn't go high just because of the lack of other options. There are other good defensive prospects in the draft, but Byram is going so high because his potential is leading the league in defensive scoring.
Do I think he'll do that? No, probably not. But he has a HUGE upside.

Who is the Hurricanes starting goalie next season? Bonus question! Do the Hurricanes stand pat with their 10 picks or use them to sign a forward?
Gavin Lee
7:28
I honestly have no idea who will be starting for them next season.
7:29
I'm unsure why a deal between them and Mrazek isn't already done. He can't be looking for a huge contract, and they have more than enough money to pay him into a short term deal.
As for the bonus, I would be very surprised if Carolina makes all ten of those selections tomorrow.

Waddell's phone is working round the clock right now

Gavin , What trade rumors have you heard, if any?
Gavin Lee
7:30
None. You?

Is the league looking at any sort of cap forgiveness plan to be put into the next CBA? Or are they just content to run with buyouts and LTIR? One would hope that would be enough, but if we’re going to see more deals like the Kevin Hayes contract, aren’t teams just going to run out of money? At a certain point that’s not even beneficial for the league anymore, even if it’s keeping payroll down. You’ve got the best player in the league in McDavid, and his team is in cap purgatory with about 5 guys who know how to play hockey on the roster. How is that good for the league?
Gavin Lee
7:31
A big jump in salary cap is likely coming with the next TV deal. That's two seasons away.
It doesn't sound like they will be putting any compliance buyouts into the CBA talks.
There will, however, likely be a reduction in contract length in my opinion.

Gavin, Krebs injury hurting his draft stock?
Gavin Lee
7:32
Doesn't sound like it's hurting him all that much.
He'll be gone by the middle of the first round, I imagine.

Any word on Dallas’ negotiations with Zuccarello?
Gavin Lee
7:33
This one sounds like it will eventually get done, though he'll probably wait to hear what the other teams have to say.
Both sides are hoping to get a deal done.
It was a great fit

Seems apparent Zucker will be traded before July 1st.  Where do you see him going and what will the return be in your opinion?
Gavin Lee
7:34
I think somehow, the Oilers need to find a way to get their hands on Zucker.
I'm not sure how it would work, but he would be just such a perfect fit.

What kind of impact do you think Eakins makes in the ducks? Was he the right hire? When do you see them back in the playoffs? Contending for a cup? Thanks Gavin!
Gavin Lee
7:35
That one won't be a long turnaround, I don't believe.
Lots of good players coming for the Ducks, and they have a top-3 goaltender in the world.
Could surprise as soon as next year.
Was Eakins the right hire? Well, he wasn't the first go round in the NHL. Let's see if he can do it this time.

Why wouldn’t the blue jackets tell Panarins agent that they will beat any offer he gets? How could he shut them down if they offered the extra year and a higher aav.
Gavin Lee
7:36
Panarin has been very clear that it's not just about the money for him.
7:37
He wants a good fit lifestyle wise, team wise, coaching.
It's why everyone pointed to Florida right away, and then when they added Quenneville they pointed again.
Injury?
7:37
How lucky is it for the lightning to have a player nobody wants end up with a long term injury....makes me wonder
Gavin Lee
7:37
I figured this would come up.
7:38
No one will ever know what conversations went on before the Callahan announcement. But I can assure you that there basically isn't a player alive who would be further against sitting out if something wasn't wrong.
7:39
He's a warrior, and he certainly isn't faking this injury.

While we’re on the topic of still-vacant forwards, any more discussion in the Leafs’ front office about Marner?
Gavin Lee

Meeting again this weekend.
Lots of talk in the media, very little information.
