I'm a little confused about what you're saying here, but I think your point is that drafting for position/need instead of talent is a mistake--I agree, if that is indeed your point.
I have never understood the "this guy is a blank, and we don't have that" idea of drafting in the NHL.

Chances Islanders get Panarin and Bobrovsky?
Gavin Lee
7:11
Always a chance--I've wondered for a while if that's why Lee and Lehner weren't done quickly.
Both might not get done at all now.

Is this team just too talented to not rebound or are there more structural issues with the roster, etc. than we might have thought a season or two ago? They seem like an enigma at this point.
Gavin Lee
7:11
There are about six players who might be too talented on that entire roster.
7:12
The team as a whole could certainly miss the playoffs again.
Holland is working his butt off on the phones though.

Do you think Backstrom gets a long term deal prior to the season? Same for Holby?
Gavin Lee
7:13
I wouldn't be surprised, to be honest.
But I'd like to see what Vrana comes in at before I made any commitments.
Avalanche Fan
7:13
Do you see the Avalanche possibly landing Panarin and/or Lee? If so, which could be more likely?
Gavin Lee
7:13
Don't get me wrong, I think the Colorado interest in Panarin is real. But I don't see them winning out over the other contenders.
7:14
Lee is still basically an enigma to me.

Still kind of shocked edm did not try for a potential scoring winger in the first rd? Caufield???
Gavin Lee
7:14
To my point of not drafting for need, if they believed Broberg was the best choice, I have no problem with the pick.
My issue would be why it seemed locked in weeks before the draft, when they had no idea who would fall.

Is Zegras a future 1C?  How likely is it that he isthe 3rd best player to come out of this draft?
Gavin Lee
7:15
Like I said above with Seider, it's probably not that likely if we're being honest. There is a real chance that some fifth rounder becomes a star.
7:16
That said, I know Anaheim was thrilled to get him at 9.

Do you think Hall gets traded,Jersey seems rest quiet
Gavin Lee
7:16
Real quiet? Did you miss the PK Subban trade?
The Devils added Jack Hughes and Subban in two days, just a few days ago.
7:17
I do not think they are trading Taylor Hall, no.

I was reading rumors earlier in the off-season about the coyotes maybe grabbing a top FA. I haven’t read anything recently, I take that it’s not happening?
Gavin Lee
7:18
They're going to be involved but adding Soderberg too takes some of that potential free agent money away
Never say never, but it's going to be tough to land one of the big names.

7:18
It doesn’t sound like the Carolina is going to bring back Mrazek. Who do you think are the best goalie targets for the Canes?
Gavin Lee
7:18
I said Lehner last summer, I'll say Lehner again.
Elwood
7:19
Which notable FA do you think breaks the ice and signs first on Monday?
Gavin Lee
7:19
There will be a flood of contracts signed 30 seconds after the period opens.
Who knows which will technically be first
They're not supposed to talk specifics during this period, but somehow deals are completely worked out and registered within minutes.
Mitch for picks, prospect+++
7:20
Do you think a Brown 2.1M for Jensen 2.5M makes sense for caps or Leafs? I know they just signed him but they're much tighter than any team not in Vegas and it might a good move for both teams
Gavin Lee
7:20
It doesn't sound that bad in theory but I think the Capitals moved Niskanen because they feel like Jensen can handle a bigger load for the cheaper price.
7:21
Gudas would honestly be less surprising to me.
Though he's also on a nice bargain now
Oh but it wouldn't be Brown for Jensen straight up
The Capitals don't need a $2MM+ bottom six forward
