But they are going to have a real, four line team next season to ice against anyone.
Don't predict a Cup, or even really the playoffs. But having real depth is something new for the Sabres.

Bjork and Krug for Panarin, who says no?
Gavin Lee
7:03
Columbus.
They don't need Krug.
If anything they're probably considering moving one of their defensemen.
7:04
Also that's probably not enough for Panarin.
Even without an extension.

Who is most likely to be moved by the Wings AA or Nyquist
Gavin Lee
7:04
Interesting.
I think maybe it's Nyquist, but that's a tough call.
7:05
This is assuming he'll waive his no-trade, but the one year left on his contract probably makes him more likely to be traded.
Maybe not more valuable or sought after, but more likely to be moved.

JVR.    Terrific add.    Good contract.     If Philly gets goaltending??????
Gavin Lee
7:05
Terrific add to be sure, but I don't love that contract.
7:06
It's good that they limited it to five years, but that's still a lot of money.
7:07
Goal scoring can dry up really quickly, and that's basically all he gives you.
Steve
7:07
If they miss out on Karlsson, do you think Vegas will make a splash with someone else via a trade? Feels like they need to do something to help replace Neal/Perron and only really bringing in Statsny
Gavin Lee
7:08
Here's the weird thing about Vegas. I think they're messing up this gift they were given.
I know that they want to keep the success going.
7:09
That's a huge part of establishing an expansion franchise.
But their salary structure is quickly looking more and more like any other team in the league.
7:10
Tatar has to be part of the replacement for Neal/Perron, because of the cost of the picks they sent and the salary space he takes up
7:11
Trading for another big contract just moves them further from that place of holding the whole league ransom.

What kind of move do you see the Pens doing.  They have a heavy presence down the middle with 87, 71, Brassard, Sheenan, and now Cullen. I would like to see them add a LW.  Trade Brassard and Maata say for Max P.  I would only do it if they can somehow resign Max P.  Thoughts?????
Gavin Lee
7:13
If Brassard is healthy I think Sheahan moves to the left side, but I get your point.
To me, Brassard (again, if healthy) is an incredible value for the price point they have him at.
More so than Pacioretty if he has to come with an extension.
7:14
Maatta bounced back this year and is still young enough to be a big part, but I guess he would have to be the one to move in any trade.
If they are going to make a splash they'd have to move Hagelin, probably, but that doesn't seem impossible.
7:15
I mentioned them as a potential dark horse for Pacioretty earlier, but I don't really know if there is a big move like that coming.
Rutherford isn't rushed, and may wait until the season starts

Do the leafs trade for a d man
Stimpyi
7:15
What off the radar dmando you see the leafs maybe getting?   I’d Cuba’s going to go all ninja and get someone no one knew was available like Alex antholopous usedto for the jays?
Gavin Lee
7:16
I think that is supposed to be "is Dubas" not Cuba, but I do think they're looking at all options for the defense.
If they needed help on the left side it would probably already be done.
Unfortunately, it's that right side that is the problem for them.
7:17
There aren't a lot of them sitting out there that are better than what they have, but not elite franchise names.
Steve
7:18
Earlier you said you weren't impressed with the Pens offseason, curious what direction would you have gone instead?

I hated seeing Sheary get dealt for pennies, but I get it given their cap situation. I know they are always potentially looking to make a trade, but doesn't that seem more likely to be a deadline situation depending on how guys like Sprong, Aston-Reese look?
Gavin Lee
7:18
To the second part, yeah that's kind of what I meant in the last Pittsburgh question. There's obviously a notion that Rutherford is always ready to strike, but starting the season with what they have isn't a bad situation
