Cap space is pretty much decided at this point though. Teams know where RFAs will land before the offseason begins. No more free agents of real worth.
6:55
The offers can certainly increase in time though, as managers decide that they want to go after him or players injure themselves in training camp.
Offers go up and down all the time
But, I agree that as the season goes on the return drops. That's what I said above.

Any chance there will be a blockbuster (or shocking) trade between now and the start of the regular season?
Gavin Lee
6:56
I think there is a very good chance we'll see a blockbuster deal, but it won't be that shocking (Karlsson/Skinner/Pacioretty etc)
Rob

Did the flames not learn they need a better backup?
Gavin Lee
6:56
I actually don't think a Rittich/Gillies combo is that bad.

best case: Win the cup. Worst case: last place
Gavin Lee
6:57
I'd argue that about 20th in the league is the real worst case.
But yes, this.

Hey Gavin! Who’s the ducks 3rd and 4th like center when the season begins (assuming no Kesler)? When do some of the youngsters, steel, etc, fill those roles? Thanks!
Gavin Lee
6:58
We get a question like this pretty much every week..but I'm not sure where they go exactly. I don't think Steel is ready, personally
Some mix of Kalle Kossila, Carter Rowney and Kevin Roy? Not an inspiring group is it.

Does Karlsson make it to arbitration?
Gavin Lee
6:59
Doubt it.

Would the Senators trade Karlsson to the Leafs if the Leafs actually made the best offer (cuz the fan backlash would be.. well.. wow!)
Elsie
7:00
Karlsson to Montreal? How could that be done?
Gavin Lee
7:00
I'm not sure either of these are possible.
I know that Dorion has made trades with them before, but sending Karlsson to either city would just be...wow.
Frank
7:02
But if the Leafs made the best offer....
After all, Dorion’s objective is to improve his team, not worry about another team
Gavin Lee
7:02
Part of winning the Stanley Cup is beating the other teams in your division, but I get what you're saying.
7:03
As much as dealing Karlsson to the Maple Leafs would likely mean taking Nylander or Marner off them and perhaps weakening them, the league still has these anti-divisional trade biases for the big stars.
Blueshirts
7:03
Do you see the NYR making any trades with there restricted FA's ? And how about them doing a deal for Lucic or Callahan?
Gavin Lee
7:03
It definitely sounded like they were involved in the talks surrounding Karlsson and the Lightning, which would have been Callahan
7:04
They'll be involved if deals like that arise again.
But Edmonton isn't looking to just cap dump Lucic.
They think he's still worth something.
Bailey

Are the Habs stuck with Price long term? He didn't have a great year last year and he's getting older
Gavin Lee
7:05
What a turnaround.
He's just starting an eight-year contract that makes him the highest paid goalie in the league.
They're "stuck" with him, yes. But if we don't see an improved Carey Price this year if he's healthy, I'll eat my hat.
7:06
(That doesn't at all mean I condone that contract. It's one of the worst in the league, even if it's not for a terrible player.)

What's the highest AAV contract you see being bought out over the next few (let's say 5) years?
Gavin Lee
7:07
That's a good question. What's the highest AAV buyout there has been? Vanek?
7:09
Non-compliance I mean. I'd have to look into it I can't think of any higher than his.
Caps Fan
7:09
do you see any of the 8 year+ contracts being bought out at some point (price, fowler, vlasic, weber, etc)
Gavin Lee
7:11
Most of these deals are basically buyout proof because of the signing bonuses. It doesn't save you much.

For instance, if you look at Price a buyout only saves around $1.4MM in cap each year.
Agents know when their client is a buyout candidate.
