Seven: The Steelers are keeping their options open. When you don't have full control over a player's future and decisions, you have to be prepared with multiple contingencies. I see Darnold as one of the prime contingencies should things spoil with Fields and/or Wilson.

Trade Pickens and pick up another FA WR or stand pat with Pickens in 2025?
Christopher Carter
1:32
I don't think Pickens is definitely gone just yet. Him and Metcalf would make for a dangerous deep ball threat on both sidelines anytime they shared the field. That could open up a lot for the run game.

When will the Steelers get rid of MT?  Looks like he is messing up QB room again? Maybe we can get someone who will start a string of non winning seasons.
Christopher Carter
1:32
They just signed him to a three year extension and we don't know what's going to happen with the QB room just yet so maybe relax.

Let's assume the Steelers skip Fields and sign Rodgers or Wilson as QB. Do you think they aggressively approach the draft for Tyler Shough, a first-round pick perhaps? They brought him in for a visit.
Christopher Carter
1:33
Tyler Shough should  not be a first round pick. Neither should Jaxson Dart. I think the sweet spot for the Steelers taking a QB in the draft is 4th round at best.

Most projections have Fields getting $12-$20m per year, but Russ getting at least $25m. Does it make any sense to pass on Fields at say $21m to sign Wilson at $25m when Fields seems to be their preferred choice?
Christopher Carter

Wilson's experience helps dictate his market. Despite what some think, he did see the field much better than Fields did last year. That's worth something. Just because they have a gap between their value doesn't mean you should let that make you overpay for the lesser valued player.
Miss ya, Wolf!

So Metcalf…I’m not sure. Yeah he’s an upgrade but historically more good than great and a lot of the same attitude issues as Pickens. Your thoughts?
Christopher Carter
1:37
I think the Steelers need to develop the power run offense they've been talking about and then neither will be that big of a problem. Winning cures a lot of problems. Look at AJ Brown and the Eagles.
Also, some FA updates: DT Milton Williams signing with the Carolina Panthers. That's a big name in the interior pass rusher department off the board. He's someone I thought the Steelers could target. Look next for Tershawn Wharton of the Chiefs there.
1:38
More FA updates: Patriots sign CB Carlton Davis to a 3-year deal. That could make for one of the best CB pairs in the NFL with Christian Gonzalez. Also one of the top targets I think the Steelers should've considered.
1:39
DJ Reed to the Lions. Another CB off the board.

If trading Pickens is the smart play, does that happen sooner rather than later so that they can sign a true #2 in FA to avoid ending up where we were last year?
Christopher Carter
1:41
Honestly, that's always tough to tell. The best time to sell is when the value is the highest. Is it high right now? Maybe. But I do wonder with the lack of superstar talent and depth in this WR class if the Steelers can get a team that's anxious over not getting the WR they really wanted in this class to overpay to get George Pickens.

Does Fields want to be back and waited till today just to get some outside interest to drive up his market value?
Christopher Carter
1:41
I think Justin Fields would have no problems being back and is just working to get the most lucrative deal possible. Which he should.

What are your thoughts on which defensive lineman the Steelers may be targeting in free agency?
Christopher Carter
1:42
I really like Tershawn Wharton. He whooped a lot of tail for the Chiefs next to Chris Jones.

I would rather bring Big Ben out of retirement for 1 year than sign Rodgers for the same.  This is in essence, the fallout of not preparing for Ben's retirement years ago, and Mason Rudolph was not the plan, or they would have treated him as such.
Christopher Carter
1:43
Ha. I'm with you that Aaron Rodgers should not be the target. And yes, not picking higher when Roethlisberger was in his twilight years has proven costly. Supposedly, Mike Tomlin wanted Lamar Jackson. But even when they took Mason Rudolph that year, BR took it as an insult. They should've not cared and gotten their guy at QB.

If fields is “the guy” and that’s what it was going to take to sign him.  Why hasn’t that happened?  Is it seeing what the $ from jets looks like?
Christopher Carter
1:44
It depends on what "the guy" means to you. To me, Justin Fields is "the guy" in that he's the bridge QB I personally think would be the best fit for the Steelers right now. But he is not "the guy" in the sense that if they get him they've got franchise QB locked up for years to come.
1:45
And yes, most likely he's exploring his financial options to make the most money off his first FA stint.

Any word on DTs being targeted ? Super Bowl champ/contributor  Milton Williams by chance?
Christopher Carter
1:45
Milton Williams going to the Panthers. I really think this team should look at Tershawn Wharton of the Chiefs.
TX Pressure
1:45
I like DK trade, about the same deal Pickens would want.  So options for Pickens keep him and let somebody else sign him - what level of comp pick would we receive?  What is Pickens worth (draft capital) on the last year of his rookie deal - wouldn't the new team want to sign him long term or see how he does?
Christopher Carter
1:46
A reminder that compensatory picks is a very complicated formula that is based on the level of players you lose and the contracts they sign elsewhere VS the players you sign and the contracts you paid to get them. So, Pickens going somewhere else doesn't necessarily NET anything if the Steelers go and get a big FA addition to go along with his loss.

1:46
Do you think Fields will hold up other Steeler signings? Do they wait to see what his contract will be?
Christopher Carter
1:47
I think it may slown things down a little. But not a ton. Hence the Metcalf trade.
George T
1:47
Now without a second round pick do you think we can move back in the first round to get a second round pick. Maybe even give them George Pickens also.
Christopher Carter
1:49
I wouldn't put it past the Steelers to do something like this. That would make a lot of sense with their history of wanting to get the full value of picks in different parts of the draft.
PODOG
1:49
Sign Rodgers and the WR from NYG. We have our TE. Look around and get a vet backup QB. Use the draft for fortifying the lines.
Christopher Carter
1:49
I'm not big on signing Rodgers, but the restn of that, all makes sense.
Brian Batko
1:52
Hi all, I'm back. What'd I miss?
Pickens
1:55
The Steelers can still use the 5th year option on GP14 correct?  If not, they have to trade him.  He will be an issue as a lame duck FA in my opinion.  Especially if he is the #2WR
Brian Batko
1:55
No, that is only for first-round picks.
Mark
1:55
Hi Bats, what is the Steelers identity as we go into the draft? Are we a running team, a passing team, or both? We seem to have the weapons, but I am not sure about the line? We simply lack consistency. Thoughts?
Brian Batko
1:55
I think identity is overrated. You should be a pick-your-poison kind of team.
