Helen

Hi, do you mean the University means tested scholarship?  The university receives a lot of the financial information from the Student Loans Company in order to determine whether a student would be eligible for the scholarship. More information can be found here http://www.leeds.ac.uk/info/130532/scholarships__personal_circumstance...

Is it possible to apply for the means tested funding from the university if you haven't taken out a maintenance loan?

Hello, thank you for your patience.

The University of Leeds makes sure that all students feel supported during their time here. As a student, I have always felt supported by my personal tutor, both academically and for my wellbeing. You can find out abit more about them here: https://medicinehealth.leeds.ac.uk/medicine-undergraduate/doc/student-...

Most courses also have student support which is provided from the students in the year above. You can ask them any questiosn you may have but also get abit of help if you're stuck on work. They are always happy to help as they have been in your position before. Medicine students have a massive emphasis on this.

At our Libraries you can receive English and Maths help via Skills@Library. Please see here: https://library.leeds.ac.uk/info/1400/study_and_research_support.

For students support within our Students Union, which typically focuses on physical and mental wellbeing, please see here: https://www.luu.org.uk/student-help-support/

What is a typical day like at Uni?

This can all depend on the course you do! A typical day may be looking like attending lectures, spending some time making notes after your lectures, at the library or just going out with your friends.

Are Lectures longer than seminars ?

Usually, seminars are longer than lectures, however, it depends on the intensity of your course where your lectures could be longer than seminars which is very rare. Additionally, amount of seminars you’ll attend as compare to lectures is usually less however still depends on your course.

Thanks for your question, medicine is a very intense subject to study at university, unfortunately I cannot tell you the average study hours per day, but you can find out more about our medicine and surgery related courses here https://courses.leeds.ac.uk/5580/medicine-and-surgery-mbchb

Hi, how many hours a day does a typical medicine student study?
Ailsa Mackenzie

Hi Katie, thanks for your patience. Unfortunately, I can't give you an answer to this as details to do with accommodation and student's return to campus are still being discussed. The University will endeavour to do what is in the best interests and safety of the students. You can check our coronavirus website for updates: https://coronavirus.leeds.ac.uk/

It’s been mentioned on the news that universities are going to put students from the same course together in the same accommodation due to coronavirus. Is this the case for Leeds, and if so will you still take our accommodation applications into consideration?

Does the University of Leeds provide any paid work?
The University of Leeds supports students to find part time work and has a job shop within the union. You may find part time employment within the many shops, cafes and restaurants in our city or you could get involved with work at the University and become a student ambassador for your subject and help out at events such as open days.

Currently we are unsure when exactly libraries and public spaces on campus will open. Our campus will open in September but the exact details of which aspects will be face to face and when larger public areas will open is currently under discussion. Please visit our coronavirus website for updates: https://coronavirus.leeds.ac.uk/

Hi Eleanor, thank you for your patience.

At first, it can seem a little strange to move away from home to university. However, do not worry. Everyone is in the same boat! Once you've met your flat and course mates, and found your way around the university, it feels normal.
From my experience, in your first few weeks at university, there can be a temptation to go home. However, after the Christmas break, I found that I was happy to stay at university during term time and then would enjoy being back with my friends and family during the holidays.

We have developed online presentations over this period, one of which is 'Making the Most of Lockdown' which should give you some hints of what you can be doing over the Summer! https://www.leeds.ac.uk/info/130580/supporting_students/810/online_pre...

Hi, so is there any tips on what i can do in lockdown before my first year at University
Ben

Thanks for your question Matthew. I am a Sport and Exercise Science student and I will be going into my final year in September. The facilities are very modern and up to date. We have Physiology labs in which we spend a lot of time testing for physiological data on our fellow students. We also have big Biomechanics labs to measure forces. As well as other facilities that are used by elite athletes throughout the year too. I would recommend taking a look at: https://biologicalsciences.leeds.ac.uk/sport-exercise-sciences/doc/spo...

Being a student at Leeds is what you choose to make it – there are lots of opportunities to get involved in societies, volunteering, clubs and teams. It’s a big university, with a pro-active student’s union and it’s in a big city. You can find out more about what you can get involved in on LUU’s website - https://www.luu.org.uk/

There are many things to do in Leeds out of your study time such as joining different clubs or societies, along with joining different sport clubs to enjoy different activities.

What type of things are there to do in Leeds out of study ?
Ailsa Mackenzie

At least while social distancing requirements remain in place, all large group learning and teaching activities will be delivered online, with smaller classes and personal tutorials being provided face-to-face where that is possible in a way which is consistent with our social distancing protocols.

If lectures are online, will we still get face to face teaching in stuff like lab work and smaller group teaching?

How many clubs/ societies are there within the university?
Helen

Hi All, thank you so much for your patience with our answers, we have an overwhelming amount of questions and are answering as quickly as possible. If your question is regarding September and how University will be we will be pinning an answer that covers this shortly.

There are over 300 societies on offer at the University of Leeds so there are many that aren't sport related! There are arts, dance, education and faith societies and many more. You can participate in shows and competitions or just join for fun! To look at all our societies on offer: https://www.luu.org.uk/

What are good examples of the societies not related to sports?

Thanks for your question. Geography BA is mainly Human Geography based so it is a Bachelors of Arts whereas the BSc Geography is physical geography so is more science based hence the different type of degree.

Student Finance England are a company that provide financial support to students in Higher Education. You can apply online for a re-payable loan to cover your course fees and to support your living costs- one is called a tuition fee loan (This goes directly to the university and covers your course fees) and one is called a maintenance loan (this goes directly to you and can cover some of your living costs). The amount you get however, is dependent on your household income and also where you choose to study. To find our more and apply please see the following website: https://www.gov.uk/apply-online-for-student-finance

Is there financial support for accommodation, stationary, travel, societies, etc?
Ben

Most of the lectures are recorded and saved online You can then access these whenever you want. This is something that I use all the time as a student to re-familiarise myself with the content priort to exams or coursework. It's also really useful if I miss a lecture.
