Anthony, what will be the toughest issue to solve between the MLBPA and MLB? Are there other major sticking points?
Anthony Franco
2:51
We're doing that whole Collective Bargaining Issues series that lays the most important stuff out in detail
So I'd check those out in full if you're really interested. But personally, the service time issue seems the hardest to budge
2:52
The league is saying they're 100% not going for any changes to three-year arbitration and six-year free agency; the players seem set on getting at least one of those things. Something's gotta give eventually
Bigger risk?
2:52
Would you prefer to sign Rodon or trade for Lopez of the Marlins given injury history, risk, money, and/or prospects needed to complete a deal?
Anthony Franco
2:53
Depends on the rest of the roster. For a team like the Giants that has a ton of money but a thin farm, Rodón. López makes a lot more sense for the Rays than Rodón would
2:54
But in a vacuum, I'd rather have López for little financial cost, assuming my medical staff signs off on his shoulder

Is Joe Barlow for real as a closer in Texas, or will the Rangers pick up someone who's "established," like Kimbrel? Thanks
Anthony Franco
2:54
I think Barlow's more a decent middle relief guy than an elite closer, but I also don't think Texas has to worry about that yet
2:55
The bullpen's bad, but they're probably looking at 2023 as a more realistic path to contention anyways. I'd let the younger guys keep getting opportunities, see who's for real, and then you can look outside for help next winter
They've also got Leclerc and Hernández coming back at some point. One of those guys might be your closer of the future once they get healthy

if i sent luis matos plus laMonte Wade, could i get back sean Manea or chris bassett
Anthony Franco
2:56
I think the A's would jump on that but I wouldn't do it if I were SF

Thank you for answering my question.  Just signed up for a year this week.  Looking forward to content and chats.  I think Mullins and Means are the last chance the Os have to add pitching, considering they don’t draft it.
Anthony Franco
2:57
Thanks for subscribing! I agree those are the two most valuable guys they've got (aside from Rutschman, who's obviously not going anywhere). I'd guess Mullins stays but Means is gone by the deadline

All the Divisions seem to have at least 3 viable contenders for each division.  Which division do you think will be the most competitive in 2022?  How about a poll?
Anthony Franco
2:58
The FO chats aren't active enough to support a poll, since a lot of people toss their question in the queue and then just come back for the transcript
2:59
I think there are three or four viable contenders for the coastal divisions, at least
Any of the good teams in the AL East can win; Nats are the only ones I'd rule out of the NL East, although the Marlins would probably need a bunch to go right
3:00
NL West has three really good teams. I'd lean Astros in the AL West but wouldn't be shocked if either Seattle or the Angels took it. (A's could too, if there's a salary floor in the next CBA that forces them to just keep the team they have now)
3:01
But the Central divisions, I'm still less convinced on. The NLC looks like it's Brewers and Cardinals to me, particularly if the Reds subtract a starter. I think the White Sox are clearly the best team in the ALC at the moment
3:02
That's not to say they're a lock. I felt the same way about Minnesota at this time last year and they turned out to be terrible. But I think the rest of the ALC is generally still meh, even if Detroit and Kansas City are getting better every year

Due to his plus fielding, if Andrelton Simmons has an 85 wRC+.....isn't that basically league average value for a shortstop?  Isn't the league average wRC+ for shortstops only about 95?  The big debate in Yankeeland is big name or stop gap.  But league averagey SS plus spending room this year/ next, even after Judge deal,  to deal with Catcher, 1st base, starting pitching, outfield. etc., while seeing what Peraza and Volpe give you this year doesn't seem like a cheap skate move per se even though many feel that way.  Thoughts?
Anthony Franco
3:03
Shortstops had a 99 wRC+ last year, hitting .260/.323/.413. They're getting really good, although I think that's mostly a function of a few incredible talents (Correa, Seager, Bogaerts, etc.) just lining up at the position at the same time
3:05
So an 85 wRC+ guy with top-of-the-scale defense wouldn't be great but it's not horrible, just probably a bit below-average. If you think Simmons can do that, he's a fine fit
But it
It's certainly not a given. He had a 56 wRC+  (.223/.283/.274) last year. That guy's unplayable, no matter how good the glove is

Best/most realistic 2B trade target for ChiSox: Segura (PHI), IKF (TEX), Kim (SDP), Lux (LAD), Torres (NYY), or Mondesi (KCR)?  I didn't include Marte (ARI) or Merrifield (KCR) because they probably won't be available at all, and if they were teams with better farms would easily outbid the White Sox.
Anthony Franco
3:06
I doubt Lux ends up being available either. Kim probably would be but it's not clear he's even better than Leury
3:07
You didn't mention McNeil, who I think is probably the best fit for any second base needy team. Segura fits there too, but he might be too expensive unless Philly's taking back Kimbrel or something as part of the deal
Joshua
3:07
I know they just traded for him at last years deadline, but does Riley Adams make sense for a team looking for a starting or part time catcher? The Nats have Keibert Ruiz starting and can easily have Tres Barrera or a veteran FA on a minimum deal be a backup. Seems to me the Nats would be better off trading off his value to another position, and that Adams has enough floor and ceiling to be in some other teams true plans. Thoughts?
Anthony Franco
3:09
Eh, I think he's generally regarded as a high-end backup catcher around the league. I don't know that a great 35 games, in which he hit for a ton of power but still struck out more than 30% of the time, changes that
3:10
Maybe he's the next Mitch Garver, but he needs to show that over a full year first. Speaking of which, the real Mitch Garver might also be available in trade and I think would be of a lot more interest
Joshua
3:10
Carlos Rodon to he Nats on a 1/$23ish deal.....who says no? The Nats have the payroll available, and Rodon gambles on himself with a high one year average deal. If he busts or gets injured, the Nats took a chance and didn't get burned long term. If he works out, the Nats can trade him at deadline, resign him, or QO him and get a draft pick.
Anthony Franco
3:10
Maybe it's just public posturing, but Boras said pretty flatly Rodón's not taking one year at the GM Meetings
3:11
Maybe the multi-year deal never materializes and they have to, but that'd be a tough look for both player and agent. I think he'll get at least two
Bob
3:12
What do you think an extension for Teoscar Hernandez would cost the Blue Jays or do you think a trade would be wise.
Anthony Franco
3:13
Hmm, this is an interesting one, since there's really not a ton of precedent for an outfielder in this service range taking a deal. With a $10MM arb projection now, you're probably looking at around $14MM for 2023
3:14
So that's 2/24, then he'll be hitting the market in advance of his age-31 season
