So, I think you're right that they should be closer, but early indications on the market make it seem like they won't be

Kimbrel to the Padres for Wil Myers and a top 20 padres prospect, like Robert Gasser. Will that get it done?
Anthony Franco
2:38
White Sox are taking on an extra $6.5MM here to grab Gasser and plug RF at the expense of the back of the bullpen
I don't think that's crazy, so sure, I can buy this one
2:39
Maybe they'd want SD to toss in $2/3MM, but I like the general framework here

If 2022 is a short season, which teams will have the best advantage because of the short season?
Anthony Franco
2:39
Answered something similar last week, I believe, but basically mediocre teams
2:40
There's inherently more randomness in smaller samples, and so it'd be easier for a below-average team to play well over something like 81 games than over 162
2:41
The 2020 Marlins are a good example. Played alright over 60 games, made the postseason, even won a playoff series. If they played a full 162, I doubt that's a playoff team
2:42
Believe it was Jon Sciambi who summed this up one time on a broadcast in a way that I liked. If you're playing LeBron James in a game of 1-on-1 for a million dollars, would you rather play first to 3 or first to 21?
2:43
You're going to choose 3, because you know you're overmatched but there's a better chance (albeit still very small) of something crazy happening in the smaller sample

I agree that Piscotty doesn't "have" to go but if Oakland has the dueling mandates to cut payroll down to $50 MM (or lower) AND put out a Representative Product then they'll need some spending cash to fill roster holes via Free Agency... or they'll tailor their trade deals towards big league ready talent, likely sacrificing ceiling in the process. Would you rather keep Piscotty for $7.5 MM or keep Montas and Trivino for $8 MM?
Anthony Franco
2:44
Sure, I get that. I just wouldn't want to negate most of the value I could get for Manaea or Bassitt by dictating that the buyer take Piscotty too
If the payroll really has to come down that far, it might be better to just aggressively sell and punt 2022 entirely

Do you think these 2 trades would solves holes and would work for all teams.   1) Ryan McMahon & Kyle Freeland from the Rockies for Alejandro Kirk, Kevin Smith, Graham Sprakler & Ross Stripling   2) Michael A Taylor from the Royals for Anthony Kay & Randall Grichuk
Anthony Franco
2:45
I think the teams Toronto's trading with here wouldn't do it in both instances
2:46
On the Rockies one, they want to compete next year. I think it's more likely they try to extend McMahon than move him
2:47
The Royals just signed MAT to a two-year extension. He's cheaper and probably better than Grichuk, and Kay might not have a place in the K.C. rotation either

A lot of talk about the Giants needing that big right handed bat. Any chance Heliot Ramos is their man?
Anthony Franco
2:47
Not impossible but I wouldn't want to count on it in that division
2:48
Ramos had a 27% strikeout rate in Triple-A last year. That probably goes up a few points against MLB pitching. It's tough to be a great hitter when you're striking out that much unless there's a bunch of walks and huge power
2:49
Steamer projects him at .239/.296/.378
2:50
Projections struggle with prospects more than any other type of player, and Ramos obviously has good bat speed and a strong pedigree. Maybe he over performs. But I'd rather that be a pleasant surprise than something I'm going into the season counting on happening

Is there a chance, with the CBA "negotiations" dragging on and on, that we see some higher tier FAs take 1 year deals, and try again next year for more term? Thought being sometimes hammering out details for long term contracts can take a while, and watching just how much a lack of a real Spring Training hurt more than a few players a couple years ago... would it arguably be better for at least a decent amount of players to cash on a big one year deal, THEN go for term heading into 2023?
Anthony Franco
2:51
Wouldn't be shocked if this happens for a couple guys, but I don't think we're talking Carlos Correa or Kris Bryant doing this
Michael Conforto, maybe Trevor Story? A bit more plausible

Would you trade Mike Trout for Tatis, Jr?
Anthony Franco
2:51
Yes

2:52
What moves do you see the giants making when the lockout ends?
Anthony Franco
2:52
They'll get another starter or two. Rodón seems like a really good fit there. I'm guessing they'll add outfield help too. They clearly like Seiya Suzuki
2:53
(As does about half the league)

2:53
What kind of year do you expect from Alex Kiriloff and Michael Kopech?
Anthony Franco
2:54
Kirilloff: low OBP but more power than he showed last year. Just knocking the ground-ball rate down a bit and staying healthy probably gets him to 20-25 homers
2:55
Kopech: grabs a rotation spot, strikes out a million dudes. Struggles with walks a bit, maybe not the most efficient starter in the world, but I think he'll be good
2:56
Doubt he gets to 165 innings like Dylan Cease did last year, but I think he can come close to Cease's kind of production on a rate basis
Ken Strauss
2:56
What do the Marlins have give up to get Ketal Marte or Bryan Reynolds?
Anthony Franco
2:57
Don't expect either Marte or Reynolds to go. Pittsburgh certainly doesn't seem to want to move Reynolds
But to get the ball rolling on that kind of thing, you're probably talking about two of the highly-regarded young pitchers (Eury Pérez and Max Meyer or something like that)

You all do a great job at MLBTR and I certainly don’t want to burn any sources or contacts. With that, can you give your assessment on whether Rob Manfred is a good commissioner?
Anthony Franco
2:58
I guess this depends on who you're asking on behalf of. Manfred works for the owners, and I think they were pretty pleased with how the last CBA turned out
