Trade Rumors Front Office Chat With Anthony Franco

One year of control, not coming off a great year (totally understandably, seeing as he beat cancer, but the production last season was just ok), same demographic problems I talked about w/r/t Hoskins
3:02
He's more valuable to the Orioles than to anyone else, given his clubhouse and community presence. But I agree, I wouldn't be in a rush to extend him right now. Just keep him and see if he bounces back to his 2019 numbers, then reevaluate
Arthur Dent

Are the Astros still the favorite in the AL West?
Anthony Franco
3:02
I think they're still the best team in the American League

Do you see Texas adding another bat ?
Anthony Franco
3:04
Probably not. It's kind of Conforto or bust at this point, and it seems like they were just targeting impact players to set the groundwork for 2023 and beyond
3:05
I'm not sure Concerto's really in that bucket, although if we're talking like a three year deal with no opt outs, then maybe they jump in

What are my Stetson boys’ (deGrom and Kluber) chances of making the HOF? Or what do they have to do to get there
Anthony Franco
3:07
I haven't thought about this too much, but I think deGrom probably just needs two or three more very good years. He's going to be light on counting stats, but he'll have been the best pitcher in baseball for like a five-year stretch and I think that gets him in
3:08
Kluber, I don't really see a path. If he comes back and wins two more Cy Youngs, then sure. But he's pretty clearly on the down slope and I think the peak with him was just a little too brief
3:09
Excellent career, Hall of Very Good for sure, but I don't think he's a Hall of Famer
Conforto
3:09
Do you think I end up in the bucket of players who revive qualifying offers and then have to wait until July to sign a deal?
Anthony Franco
3:09
I'd be really surprised if he doesn't sign before Opening Day

Seems like the twins could use a starter and preferably a frontline one. If only they had Jose berrios… seriously though, there was no need to sell him off when he had this extra year of control on him and agreed to a seemingly pretty reasonable extension
Anthony Franco
3:10
I don't think they saw trading Berríos as a need so much as they just loved Austin Martin and this was their one chance to get him
3:11
He's divisive because he doesn't hit the ball particularly hard, but there were people (myself included) who thought he was better than Torkelson coming out of the draft in 2020. Seems like that take's going to be wrong, but if they felt that way, going and getting him makes sense
3:12
Let me get a headline up on Aaron Brooks and then I'll circle back and hit a few more questions
3:16
Alright I'm back

The Red Sox lost E-rod, Renfroe, and schwaber and replaced them with JBJ, Story, and depth SP. how are the not the 4th best team in the division? Also, do you think that the 4th best team in the AL east is better than the mariners and/or Twins?
Anthony Franco
3:17
I agree I'd have the Red Sox fourth in the East. Probably still above Minnesota pending the Twins' hunt for more pitching. I think I lean Seattle over Boston though

For all of the trade chatter I get in these chats, did everyone know my name was spelled with 1 “L” and not two???? I feel like I’m just realizing this
Anthony Franco
3:18
Ha, wait until you look closely at your last name

Does Alejandro Kirk start the season as the Jays DH?
Anthony Franco
3:19
He'll see time there, although I'm guessing they'll rotate Teoscar and Gurriel through as well on days when Tapia plays the corner outfield
Jeremy
3:19
I think I asked last week your top 5 rotations heading into the season: thoughts?
Anthony Franco
3:20
In my head, this question was top three rotations, so apologies if you asked for five
I have two answers for top three, depending on what happens with Trevor Bauer
If Bauer stays with the Dodgers, I'd go
  1. Brewers
  2. Dodgers
  3. Mets
3:21
If he gets suspended or they cut him,
  1. Brewers
  2. Mets
  3. Astros
So I guess that's my top four. Teams I'd consider for the fifth spot include San Diego, the White Sox and Toronto
3:22
Could toss Miami into that mix as well

How concerned would you be about Luis Severino’s two very poor outings in spring training (3.3 innings, 7 ER I think)
Anthony Franco
3:23
Not at all. I wouldn't even look at spring stats
If he comes out throwing 87 MPH, sure, that's worrisome. If the stuff looks mostly normal but he's getting shelled, don't care
They're not real games, and guys are just trying to work stuff out

WHAT???? I feel like I’ve been lied to for so long
Luke the Drifter
3:24
Why have we not seen the Rangers trade the abundance minor league infielders for starters yet ?
Anthony Franco
3:24
Some of that is going to sort itself out naturally because they're not all going to be as good as you'd like
3:25
Between Foscue, Durán and Josh Smith, you're probably only going to get one everyday player. That's not a knock on any of them -- I love Foscue in particular -- but that's how prospects are
3:26
The longer you wait, the more information you gather about which one of those guys is the most talented so you don't trade away a good player
