NL only standard 5 category batter stats rs. Need to fill an open spot in the OF. Rosario Slater or McCarthy. What day ye on these 3 srubs
Brad Johnson
12:30
I like McCarthy a lot for fantasy purposes.
He's going to struggle to claim a long term starting job in the AZ OF. For now, he's a light-weight five-category touch.
12:31
Basically, I expect something like a .260/.320/.410 line with a pace of 12-15 HR and 15+ SB per 600 PA.
Batting 6/7 which isn't terrible

Berti had one heck of a June.  If/when he gets activated this week does he go back to starting everyday or back to more of a bench role?
Brad Johnson
12:32
I'd guess they ease him back and see if he forces his way back into things
That was BABIP gold though so I wouldn't hold my breath

Myles Straw, Nolan Jones, OPScar Gonzalez, etc. etc. What's going on with Cleveland's outfield? Is there a real-meal deal among the bunch of them?
Brad Johnson
12:33
Not sure what a real-meal deal is, but I do like all of these outfielders under the right conditions.
12:34
Straw goes through these long funks where he's not quite squaring up the ball enough. Then he'll lock in for awhile. His gloves beautiful enough to support the slumps irl, but that doesn't help fantasy managers.
Good guy for the bench to hunt the odd SB
12:35
Jones feels like trade bait to me. He's actually holding his own defensively in the outfield, but a corner INF spot feels like a better use of his talents. He's actually generating a lot more lift than I expected. Only 2 HR to show for it though.
12:36
There's a whiff of Max Muncy to his game
12:37
Gonzalez has to keep hitting to retain a role. This profile doesn't usually stick as a starter. He has Adam Duvall's lack of discipline and whiffs with DJ LeMahieu's ground ball rate.
That's not good!
12:38
Granted, he's making it work for now. Avisail Garcia and Randal Grichuk are a couple of the guys who have stuck with this profile.

Who do you like better ROS and next (and how much?): Urquidy or McKenzie? Thanks!
Brad Johnson
12:39
I like McKenzie more in part because I think the Guardians have a better park for his extreme fly ball gimmick. He's shown capacity to avoid home runs, though any kind of slump can turn ruinous with this pitcher type.
12:40
They're both extreme fly ball guys who rely on inducing low BABIPs. Really, quite similar in how they collect their results.
Urquidy's a better play for Ws this year.

Why did the Brewers let Lamet walk? Rosenthal was a better option?  Seems like Lamet was part of what made that trade palpable. I feel like the Brewers have been reeling since that trade.
Brad Johnson
12:41
So, fantasy chat and such, I'll just add that Colorado is the one place where Lamet isn't a fascinating fantasy reclamation project. We can walk away without regret now.

Keeper H2H categories league - my team is not doing great so I'm starting to look at keepers. Due to injuries, my keeper costs for Tyler Glasnow and Jesus Luzardo would be the minimum - have I stumbled into great value, or is there too much risk there?
Brad Johnson
12:42
No, not too much risk. You'll want to keep an eye on Luzardo though. His velo has been down since returning. Possibly by design. Velo increases are massively correlated with injuries.
12:43
Given his injury history...
Diego Cartaya
12:43
I hold him as a long-term keeper.  Should I be worried that the Dodges used their first draft pick on Dalton Rushing — a 21-year-old college catcher?  Cartaya strikes out a ton, but he's also an OBP machine.  What are you hearing on his defense?  Thanks.
Brad Johnson
12:43
Don't worry about draft picks in MLB
12:44
Teams are running a complex optimization formula in-draft, and it's generally completely ignoring the players already in the organization.
They're trying to come out of the draft with the most talent. And smart orgs, like the Dodgers, try to also prioritize players types they've historically done a good job developing.
12:45
I don't think any other franchise has done halfway as much with their catching prospects.
Are the Blue Jays next best? At least of recent teams.
12:46
I need to dig up my notes to comment on Cartaya's defense. No doubt he can stick though.
12:47
Right, I remember now. 70+ grade arm. Solid receiver. He's big and bulky which can cut both ways.
Remember how Salvy Perez used to be a standout defender? Now he's pretty close to terrible.
So... I wouldn't worry much if you aren't thinking about 2032
Re: Straw
12:47
The strangest thing about Straw's July is that he was actually hitting pretty well again (at least avg/obp) but stopped running almost entirely. Left me flummoxed.
Brad Johnson
12:48
That's the one rub on Straw. He's always been a little bit timid on the bases. It's like he only wants to steal if you're sleeping on him, but everybody knows to pay close attention.
Brandon Drury
12:48
I'm the 35th ranked player on Yahoo - this season is just a fluke right? Or is this career season at the age of (almost) 30 a sign that I would actually be a great keeper at $5?
Brad Johnson
12:50
I mean, this is probably his Rich Aurilia season (hopefully you're old enough for the reference to land), but Aurilia did play to 2 WAR or better in four of his next five seasons. Drury's stealth not-old and there is real skills growth evident in his Statcast data.
