What can I do to stand out as a dentistry applicant, especially at Leeds?
Hi, how can I stand out as a dentistry applicant, especially at Leeds, considering it is a highly competitive course
And also how can I stand out as a dentistry applicant?
Sana Imran

Yeh thank you I think it’s needed.

@laraib it would really depend, as that is still quite some time away and things are always changing! Graduate medicine programmes are usually at least 4 years still at the moment, so you need to consider this option very carefully before going down that route. We run a few events on the scheme that deal with plan b's for medicine, as well as all the careers within the medical field that aren't just a GP or a surgeon!

@Maariya one of our current dental students provided the following top tips for applicants and for interviews: 1. Be yourself. They really want to see who you are as a person, they don't want you to put on a front or pretend to be something youre not.
2. Smile! I know you'll be nervous but try to smile and even put a smile on the interviewer's face. But still maintain your professionalism. As soon as you walk through the door of the building you're being assessed 3. Breathe. If you don't know the answer to a question then just take a few seconds to gather your thoughts. It's fine to say 'can I have a few seconds to gather my thoughts please?' and figure out a structured answer instead of just saying the first thing you think of.
4. Have a good breakfast in the morning
5. Set off well before you’re menat to be there. It's much better to be early.
6. Engage with people. The other students, the staff, the current dental students. Engage in conversations with all of them. Doesn't have to be dental related at all,

@nora - Get Set For Uni Part Two being in the Easter holidays :)

@laraib I'd recommend coming to as many academic sessions as you can for things that you're interested in other than medicine and dentistry, as you might find your niche! We've had students in the past who thought they wanted to be doctors that actually ended up studying Aviation Tech, so there might be something totally different that you find you love more - I'm not saying it's for certain, but keep an open mind!

This is a BLUE event, and will count towards your event attendance. Please email the inbox (reachforexcellence@leeds.ac.uk) with the code UW9623 to register your attendance. Don't forget to include your full name and school so we know who you are!

AvatarHaaroon
4:31
@anisa we are not able to repeat everything in the programme (like Academic Sessions) but we do repeat catch ups of the events the team run in your spring holidays
4:32
@anisa we do a full catch up of Get Set For Uni Part 1 and 2 in Spring usually if students want us to re-run it if you missed out!

When do UCAS 2020 applications start
AvatarShauni
4:35
Quite a few of you seem worried about getting the grades! Remember as an RfE student you will be eligible to transfer to Access to Leeds if you are interested in studying at Leeds. This would lower your entry offer by two whole grades (AAA becomes ABB). Don't worry too much about this now - we'll be telling you everything you need to know on the summer school

When are summer school applications

With the recent review regarding tution fees, is it true STEM degrees will be more expensive to do in the future as opposed to other degrees?

When do we sign up for the next events?
AvatarMolly
4:37
@Russell You'll start looking at things more seriously towards the end of year 12, and applying at the start of Year 13 - currently the early applicant deadlines are in early October and the remainder in January, but you'll find out the specific dates for these in Get Set for Uni Part 2.
AvatarHaaroon

@Hamzah Easter events open on 20th March

What are some examples for next set of uni activities
AvatarMatthew John

Hi @Mur. It won't definitely mean that you get an offer, but it will definitely help to strengthen your application.
AvatarShauni
4:38
@Becca great that you've been keeping up to date with the news! We don't really know what changes (if any) will happen to student finance, but we don't expect it to go this way. We'll be providing up to date information specifically for 2020 university entry in October at Get Set For Uni Part 3
Becca

@Shauni thank you for the info
AvatarHaaroon

How can I register attendance for this web chat?
laraib
4:39
I've always wanted to do medicine at Leeds and have done work experience in the LGI that I loved. I don't have any conflict about wanting to be a doctor, it's choosing the right University i'm worried about. My teachers are recommending that I apply to oxbrige but the medical degree there is 6 years and I feel like that's a long time to stay away from home:( which is why I wondering if I could study in both uni's.
